Hello,

Does anybody know if BDP-S790 has any issues with big USB 3.0 drives?

I am about to purchase a USB 3.0 pendrive of 32, 64 or 128 GB and format with NTFS. Will it work with this player?

Apologies if it was already answered - this thread is so long I was unable to find an answer :)

Cheers

I've used a Corsair Flash Voyager USB 3.0 16gb drive with no issues. I don't know how larger drives will react, but I do know 3.0 is backwards compatible. Nothing should have an issue with the higher speed, it just doesn't take advantage of it.

Now I have a question. Has anyone played a DVD with PCM audio on these units?
I tested a couple today and found the audio to be just slightly out of sync.

I do route the audio via optical cabling and the video directly to the TV via HDMI. I use an audio delay to compensate.
Is there a reason PCM audio would react differently?
Anyone else find PCM weirdness, at least where DVDs are concerned?

I will reply to my own post.
Apparently any audio delay set on the S790 is NOT applied to PCM audio (at least when the source is DVD).
I am unable to test this for BD PCM audio tracks, but then again most of you probably route A/V to the tuner and let the tuner handle the delay(?).

My work around is to set my tuner to my TV's audio input instead of the S790. That way the audio is passed via HDMI to the TV, which applies it's own delay and then the TV outputs the track back to the tuner.
Probably less lossy by that time, but at least it's in sync.

Can anyone tell me if playing a Sony 4k remastered blu-ray on the BDP-S790 is it playing the disc with xvYCC (expanded colour) on or do I need to switch it on via my Samsung tv which gives you the option to switch on xvYCC in the advanced settings?

The feature only works when you use a supported sony tv. In addition the s790 doesn't support the feature.

So you're saying that even if the Samsung tv has the option of switching xvYCC on, it's actually not activating the expanded colour because the player doesn't support it?

I own the S790 and it is connected to the Samsung 6300 60" HDTV for me. When I turn on the expanded color of the TV, it works with the Blu Ray player. The Natural color setting of the TV works with any input.

On my Sharp TV l get an extra mode when l play a mastered in 4k disc, so it does work on other TVs.

On the Samsung, l don't know how it works, because in Movie mode the xvycc Colour Mode is always available, 4k disc or not.

Is it possible to view YouTube streams that are live on the s790? I tried with the regular YouTube app, but it can't find the video when I search.

The new app I've never signed up with so I don't think I can test it. Anyone know?

Do you guys have a Spiderman advertising icon for the trailer in the middle of your Video section menu?
I find this ridiculous, I bought and paid for this hardware and now Sony is pushing ads into the menu of my bluray hardware which I cannot pot-out of nor remove.

Yup, we get that but not a reasonable firmware updates. I'm pretty sure ASM2 had bombed enough that no one is looking for more info on it.

Like previous Sony models it supports xvYcc (just not the Mi4K metadata). Actually it officially supports the Sony version, x.v.Color™ Technology : Yes (from page 1, post 1).

Try unplugging your unit for a minute. These things go funny sometimes and soft resets don't always help.

A question: I just added a new av receiver. It has a LAN port but no wifi.
Although undocumented, is it possible to use the BDPS790's LAN port as a bridge to the S790's wifi?

I could just test it, but I figured I'd ask first.

My recommendation is download Serviio. It's free and seems to work better than many other alternatives. http://serviio.org/download

Other considerations:
Audio-
-FLAC is NOT supported
-Audio tracks are selectable
-LPCM5.1 is not supported in MKV (may be too high a bitrate for M2TS, needs more testing).

Subtitles-
-Subtitles are selectable.
-(M2)TS does not support any compatible format of subtitles.
-SRT embedded subtitles work in MKV.
-SRT external subs work with TS, AVI and MP4 if on the fly re-encoding is selected.
-VOBSUB works embeded in MKV OR authored DVD, but can only be 720p resolution and lower. (Which makes them a poor option for 1080p video.)
-PGS (BD-SUP) doesn't work except as an authored Blu-ray disc.

Video-
-XviD is supported in any container.
-DivX works if you change the header to XviD. You can do this with mkvtoolnix or http://www.fourcc.org/changer/.
-MPEG2 is supported in .MPG or .(M2)TS, but not MKV.
-H.264/x264/AVC is supported in .MP4, .MKV or .(M2)TS

-High@L4.1 is best (even if it is LOWER patching seems to improve playback)
You can patch other levels to 4.1 with tsMuxerGUI. Results vary.
-For all MKV files add the following command line options: --engage no_cue_duration --engage no_cue_relative_position

If you have subtitles and chapters, the mux needs to be in this order: Video, Audio Tracks, Chapters, Subtitles.

Subtitles before chapters will cause playback problems.

For BD Remuxes-
MKV is best but high bitrates may cause stuttering.
Convert subtitles with BDSup2Sub to VOB/SUB or to .SRT with your favorite OCR software.

...Hope that helps, I've been meaning to collect that coherently for awhile.

No need to change the header. Serviio will transcode DivX into a format that Sony BD players can play. In fact, you can set it up that Serviio will transcode anything into a format that Sony BD players can play.

True, but that also means substantial CPU impact on the server and a loss of image quality because it's on-the-fly encoding.

I was trying to make clear what the S790 natively recognizes. With re-encoding you can serve pretty much anything.

The header patch is a lossless change to the source. I believe Sony didn't want to pay DivX royalties so they ONLY support generic versions of the codec. The patch makes the file lie that it is not 'official' DivX.

I have an almost four-year old PC that I use as DLNA server and never found that to be the case. New-ish PCs have horsepower to transcode on-the-fly and plenty left over for other tasks.

Funny thing is Canadian Sony BD players can do Divx. Sony just cheapened out on US BD players.

I had the same problem with an old Panasonic DVD player. The Canadian model could play DivX, but the U.S. model, although it had the same chip could not because of the firmware (and Panasonic being cheap).

Still, I was trying to be clear on what the Sony BD player supports. Other file formats will be server and software dependent.

In fact that list is also true for files on USB drives and media files burned to CD, DVD or BD (although I wouldn't try burning x264/MKV files to a CD because they can't spin fast enough).
