I have the S590 and when I use Netflix to stream movies and tv shows, the audio starts before the picture starts. This only happens right after when Netflix finally loads the movie. I use a wired connection. Is it normal?

Google "blu-ray disc loading time" and you'll find dozens of blog entries (on sites like CNET) written by people who did exactly that. "How fast does it load discs?" is a common question about BD players and there's no other way to find out other than to time it. Why does that strike you as funny?

Yes it is normal for this player; it will also sometimes continue playing the sound for a few seconds after the video stops.

Do you think that Sony will release a firmware update to fix this problem or is it a problem on Netflix's side?

Anyway I like the S590 more the Panasonic DMP-BDT320 that I returned a few weeks ago due to its terrible lipsync issue with Netflix that turning off BD-Live and doing a factory reset could not fix it and it was laggy in the UI and in Netflix, also it was no better than my DMP-BDT210 (I couldn't stand the black flashes when streaming Netflix movies) which I sold it about a two weeks ago.

It's possible. I don't see it as being a horrible problem since it doesn't seem to affect audio sync.

Because in my case, I do not need a stop watch show me if a BDP is a slow loader or not. It is either acceptable to me or it is not. I could care less if one player is 2.976 seconds faster.

Someone asked the question of whether one is faster than the other; I had both machines , tested a couple of discs with them and posted the answer. I suppose I could have said, "well, I tried loading discs with both and they both seemed fast enough". It was simple enough to measure, so I measured. (I was also a bit curious about the common claim that the Panasonics are the fastest disc loaders). People writing reviews will often quote disc load times, rather than just say, "seems to load discs pretty fast to me" or "it seems pretty slow loading discs".

Your finding it funny is one thing. Posting here to mock me for having done it is just asinine.

A couple of pages ago in this thread, there was a member who asked if someone could measure the size of the black bars for some anamorphic movies. Someone obliged. Not every post in a general thread like this is going to be interesting or relevant to you, me or anyone else reading it. The polite thing to do is refrain from commenting on those topics. If everyone replied every time they read something that wasn't relevant to them, the thread would be overrun with crap.

Can someone please measure the thickness of the loading tray and do a material test. I heard it was extremely flimsy compared to the Panasonic's. I expect measurement to a 1/10th of a mm, and a detailed breakdown of the materials used.

I recall that you were one of the people who measured the black bars.

When I booted up the 590 with a Blu Ray, I immediately saw it to truly be a bit slower than the Panny 220. My first reaction was "Huh?". But, in the end, it's by no means a deal breaker for me. The Sony is still more friendly overall, with absolutely solid PQ and SQ.

I'm not being patronizing, michaeltscott, when I tell you that I have found your comments and info to be very helpful. It's true that the Sony is indeed slower at starting. You validated that for me. It doesn't sway me from my decision, but it is so. Again, I appreciate what you've done, and thank you for your input. Keep on keeping on.

Thanks for your appreciation . The Sony is not so much slower loading discs as to matter to me either, particularly since I rarely watch BDs. Of the two discs that I tested, the Sony was 11 and 14 seconds slower to load; I think that I could live through the additional delay.

EDIT: It occurred to me that I had one more BD player that I could test (sorry, Talk2Me ). My launch model PS3 loads T2 in 46 seconds, 8 seconds slower than the BDT220, 6 seconds faster than the S390. I'll admit that that was a little bit obsessive compulsive .

I was able to listen to SACD's and CD's today and am really happy with the Sony. I had my Oppo so long I forgot that it couldn't do DSD over HDMI( it was the DV983H) and always missed the first few notes of the 1st track of a CD or SACD during playback. I need to insert a happy icon here.

I had the same issue w/ SACDs (missing the first 5 seconds) when sending DSD via HDMI from my Oppo 980 to a Marantz 7002. Unfortunately, I have the same issue w/ the S590 and the Marantz, so it's an issue w/ the Marantz locking on the DSD stream, I guess.

Amazon has a ton of SACDs - just add that to your search term.

Or, you can go here:

http://store.acousticsounds.com/index.cfm

...which is where I've purchased a number of discs.

You will like SACD, if you have a resolving system (i.e. you need good speakers that are setup/positioned properly and/or good headphones).

Can the 590 be configured to always send 1080i over HDMI?

I can't find any mention of this feature in the online manual, although I might have overlooked it. I've had intermitent problems with 1080p over a long HDMI cable, but 1080i works fine.

Yes, as part of the setup process you tell it what you want the output to be.

This actually causes me problems. I want 1080p for the projector, but 1080i for the TV (the TV won't handle 1080p). It's not too bad to switch from 1080i to 1080p when I use the projector, but switching back using the TV can be a challenge.

Has anyone posted images of the new Netflix interface for the S390 and S590? I am trying to decide between one of these Sonys and the Panny 220 or 320, but can't see what the new Netflix UI looks like.

Yes.

Screen settings > Output Video Format > HDMI Connection > 1080i

Turning off Deep color also may help.

Geffin HDMI extender (SB Plus) will help with long HDMI cable runs. Unfortunately, these products can be often as expensive as the bluray player

The interface on the 2012 Panasonics is visually identical (I have a 220, but the 320's Netflix UI is no different). It is significantly less responsive than on the Sony players, especially when navigating the Netflix television episode menus, which is very lagged on the Panasonic players. The Sony players also have an information overlay which pops up when you press the DISPLAY button which tells you exactly what quality level video that you're currently watching (Low/SD, Medium/SD, High/SD, Medium/HD, High/HD or X-High/HD), what soundtrack you're listening to and what subtitle/captions are being displayed (if any)--I really love that.
