The s590 now showing pre-order at amazon.

Front display : yea, just another cost cutting exercise ... Although these days with onscreen displays not sure what value a front display gives you.

I like it. Coming from the PS3(in another room) the menu is familiar. Will test out the streaming tomorrow.

Well, Amazon isn't selling the new Panasonic players at list. I suppose it is because the Sony's aren't in stock yet. Amazon says the 390 will ship in 2 - 5 weeks, so I guess that is a pre-order as well. But Amazon usually offers a discount off list for pre-orders as well.

Amazon was selling the BDT220 at full price a few weeks ago when I bought mine. The sellers who have these in stock have little to no competition--wait a month or so and everyone will have them.

BTW guys. If anyone's after a nice USB stick that doesn't stick out a inch from the player (especially if you have the S390 ...), I found this one at Amazon that's very nice indeed.

Verbatim Store 'n' Stay 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive. 4GB for less than $10.

Updated firmware posted today (03-13-12) for both the S590 and S390. Get you Cinavia hat's on folks. This is interesting, as it looks like if you buy a model today, it doubtful it would have Cinavia

This utility updates the Blu-ray Disc player firmware to version M12.R.0211 (S590) M11.R.0211 (S390) and improves BRAVIA® Internet Video connectivity.
Note: This update includes Cinavia™ content protection technology. Information about Cinavia technology is provided at the Cinavia Online Consumer Information Center at: http://www.cinavia.com.

I'll report back if there are any drastic changes.

That sux. May have to steer clear of the Sony's then. Anyone know if Panasonic players have cinavia...last year's or this year's models?

They might not at the time you buy it but it will most likely be installed during a subsequent firmware upgrade. As with the Sony's; most retail models at the moment most likely do not have cinavia preinstalled. It will however be installed during the firmware upgrade.

I agree, they need a new ES model. Sure hope these new players are quieter than my S780 I picked up about a month ago. IMHO the drives are to noisy. In my bedroom it's very easy to hear! I've heard a few of the 580 models and they seem about the same. I picked up a Panasonic 320 the other day to compare and the 320 is much quieter and sounds about what I would think it should sound like. Sometimes the Sony sounds like a mini jet engine, depending on the disc. High pitched sound definitely coming from the drive. The 320 may be going back, not sure I care for the touch panel remote and not sure about there interface either!

It's mentioned in the back of the manual. Unless they added it without saying anything, even in the firmware upgrade release notes, it's not in last year's Panasonic models.

Greetings apw2607.

What's the firmware version prior to upgrade?

Many thanks and best regards.

Interesting. The online pdf manual for the s590 mentions cinavia. The physical print manual that comes with the player has no reference.

The Sony store now has the 590 in stock. Hopefully that means Best Buy and/or Amazon will get it soon.

You should be able to use the DLNA / USB features prior to updating, but it looks like you need to update the firmware in order to use the on-line services.

Next time there is a firmware update, I will test out this theory.

I am a 390 owner. A comment about firmware and testing: I have only had it for a few days, but when I first got it, there was a firmware version available, and I could not access any of the online services (netflix, amazon, etc.) until I uploaded the new firmware. Another new version became available yesterday, and again, the box blocked me from using Netflix. Anyone else experience this?

I ordered a 590 from Sony Rewards on Friday and they still haven't shipped the sucker, though they did put an immediate hold on the funds. It slipped from "Ordered" to "Processing" state on Monday, from which it cannot easily be cancelled. I wish I'd requested cancellation. I've been spoiled by Amazon's shipping any in-stock item that they warehouse within 24 hours or less.

It should be noted that Amazon's stock of 390s almost immediately evaporated; they're fronting a Marketplace seller which has it, saying that if you order from them instead that it will ship within 2-5 weeks.

This is like Xbox and PS3 firmware updates. You can choose not to make them but you can't log into XBL or PSN until you do and therefore cannot use online services.

Have you tried disabling the internet connection? When you bootup it will not be looking for the update because there will be no interent connection. Just a thought.

Thought of that, too, but it's not worth it to me. I am not concerned about the rights management, because I am not going to cross it. Disks and online streaming only for me.

Ignore this reply, I didn't understand youre post until I read it a few times.

As Michael says, sounds like its behaving like Ps3. I did't try using a online service before doing a firmware update.

If you disable Firmware update notification, I wonder if it will then allow you to use a on-line service.

I sent them a email, requesting shipping times ... if I recall, I got a email back quickly saying it had shipped. I had to ask for a tracking number .... they did get back to me a day or so later, but the unit had already arrived by then !

I fired off a query from their site. I really, really wish that I'd asked the guy to request cancellation on Monday and ordered the 390 from Amazon--I'd probably have it by now . EDIT: The auto-response assures me that my message is important and promises that it will be answered within two business days.
