Problems with Universal Remote and video issues-LG BP620
So far, I like my LG BP620 Blu-ray player. However, I seem to be having issues with it responding to commands from my Universal Remote (URC200). The remote that came with the DVD player works flawlessly However, my Universal Remote does not always control the device on the first button press. Sometimes it takes 3-5 presses before the DVD player responds. I do NOT have any similar issues with any other devices (Receiver, Panasonic Blu-ray player, Samsung Blu-ray player and my Sony DVD player). Distance from the remote to player doesn't seem to matter either....the LG just won't always respond.
The other issue I am experiencing is related to video when playing a DVD. When a scene pans from right-left or left-right. The picture seems to fold in on itself several times during the pan. The issue is hard to describe, but I guess you could describe it as a kaleidoscope. It is very annoying.
Note: The video issue happens with regular DVDs and also Blu-ray DVDs. (None of the DVDs are 3-D)
I am using the HDMI output from the player.
Is anyone experiencing either issue or know what to do about it?
Can you change settings on your universal remotes like repeat rate of signal? My Harmony allows custom control if a device does not respond to the default settings. However, my BP620 had no issues with the default Harmony settings. Sometimes I have a line of sight issue, but that's the cabinet door and the angle of the couch, not the LG or remote. I have thought about a repeater but not in a rush to spend $50.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I don't believe that there is a way to change the signal rate on my URC Universal Remote. I also have the RF to IR repeater and this makes no difference either. Same lagging behavior. I tried the stock settings when I setup the remote and also tried the "Learn" function to learn settings from the original remote. Learning makes no difference. It just seems odd that over the years I have used this remote to control at least 30 different pieces of equipment and never had any issues. It is difficult to believe that the LG is so finicky. I do have a Harmony remote so maybe I will try programming it for the LG and see what happens. Unfortunately, I have a Harmony 650, so it doesn't do RF. If my harmony works, I just might get a new remote.

Well, I tried my Harmony 650 remote and it controlled the LG BP620 without any issues. For testing purposes, I then "learned" the Play, Pause and Stop on my URC-200 from the Harmony Remote. Now on the URC-200 remote, it won't perform Play, Pause and Stop functions. Looks like I will need a new remote control. Anyone using a remote (like the Harmony 900) that sends RF and also have the receiver that converts is to RF to IR? I need this functionality since my components are in a cabinet. I hate to spend that kind of money to support one device.

sorry it will end up costing you, but at least you know it was the remote. There is a remote forum on AVS where folks post about their experiences. You might find good recommendations there for your setup.

How does the 620 stack up compared to similar offerings from competitors ? Seems like the only real issue would be the lack of app offerings (amazon). I'm getting an lm7600 so I was planning on picking this one up to go with it. What are the comparable offerings so I can go check out their threads.

Hi Ryan, I can honestly say that I have had two of the most popular brands and find the LG is as good if not better. It is quiet while loading the disc and quite fast when loading. Blu ray picture is about the same and it up converts nice. I don't use the apps so I can't comment on that. The menu system is quick also. FF and rewind work fast also with hardly no hesitation. The only noise I can really hear is when the try ejects but no big deal. If you have any questions I will try to answer. I have the 620 by the way. I have had no problem with wifi also.

Does anyone have a DLNA profile for Plex for the BP620? I would like to use Plex if possible so I don't have to have two different media servers running.

I find it a little odd that the LG UK website lists this player as having MediaLink/Plex support but the US version does not. Maybe it's a licensing thing.

Thank you, that is good to know. It is just hard when no matter what online review you look at it seems that there isnt a nice TV/blu ray player etc on the market. Even if it's top of the line when it comes to what is available nothing seems to get favorable reviews.

It's like, This xxx TV is the best on the market, but it gets an 8/10. Seems to me whatever is "the best" should be close to a '10'. Doesnt seem like that is ever the case though.

Just hard when everything is reviewed/analyzed by people that are gurus of the tech world, when almost any average consumer would think the product is great and does everything that they expect and want.

Your welcome Ryan. Cnet rated the panasonic as their editors number 1 choice but I find the lg better in every way. Remember though this is just my opinion.

Im planning to get the BP-220 and have a couple of questions before I take the plunge:
  • Does this player handle 1080/24p correctly from MKV files via USB/HDD?
  • Unfortunately this model doesn't support DTS-HD, however, my Denon AVR-1612 receiver does support DTS-HD. Will I be able to get 'lossless' DTS-HD to work via MKV & USB/HDD or will the player reduce the sound to only DTS? Can the Bluray player simply pass the 5.1 DTS-HD signal from the mkv file to the receiver so that I can get lossless audio?
  • How does the codec support compare with the similarly priced Samsung BD-E5300?

Appreciate your help guys.

According to the website, LG BP220, it does support DTS-HD. It just shows a blank on the "compare" listings, due to an error. Haven't tried streaming with my 620 yet, so I can't answer your mkv questions.

Just a note, you can get the BP-620 at Costco for $99, so I'm not sure how much you'll be saving with the BP-220.

Hello all. From what I've seen, these line of LG players don't have a Zoom button on the remote control that the previous generation of players had. I use that button on my BD670 to zoom in 3D Blu Rays a little so they have a larger 3D image which makes the movie more immersive. For example, The Polar Express 3D Blu Ray which has a 2.35:1 widescreen image looks a lot better with a larger image to me and others I've shown as well. I was disappointed to see that LG removed this capability. Can someone here confirm that I'm correct about this?

Actually I live in Dubai, UAE and electronics are ridiculously priced here. Hence Im going for the budget BP-220.

If you get a chance, please do provide an update regarding the MKV support.

I just picked up the BP220 and could not be more happy with it. My PS3 died sometime back and I did not want to spend the money to replace it but needed a good Blu-Ray player. It's a nice plus that this supports DLNA servers also. Just like the PS3 but better than the PS3 it will play MKV files. Just rename the MKV files to .AVI and you are good to go. All this for just $80. Best purchase I've made in a while.

You will be happy to know that Consumer Reports ranked the LG620 as number 1 over the samsung, sony and pnasonic blu ray players.

I have a BP 220 and it failed to play Grosse Pointe Blank and The Avengers this weekend. Has anyone else had any issues with this player or do I have a dud?

Got both discs to play with a Samsung, so I know the discs are OK. Both went straight from the package to the trays, and don't have any obvious damage. I tried upgrading the player, but no new updates were pending.

Whoever told you that is a total liar. Just like other mammals, ninjas can be mean OR totally awesome.

The following organizations rank LG as number 1 among Blu ray Players.
1. Consumer Reports
2. PC Magazine
3. Consumer Research, saying that the Blu Ray play back was equal to the OPPO 93.

My BP220 stopped working yesterday. When I turn it on, it shows 'HELLO' on the front of the unit, and gets stuck there. The home menu doesn't appear, just the background that is usually behind the home menu. I tried unplugging it several times (including leaving it unplugged for half an hour), but that didn't help. I contacted LG customer service, but their two suggestions were to unplug it or "From the home screen, select set up". Since I can't access the home menu, I can't select 'set up'....

Looks like I made the wrong decision for my first blu ray player frown.gif

I just recently bought a used BD570 and it plays audio cd's and blu-ray dvd's without a problem but it will not play standard dvd's,i get the check disc error in the display? I did a firmware update and cleaned the optical lens and also reset the unit by unplugging it for about a minute,i also contacted LG customer service about this problem and they said i did everything right and if none of the procedures i tried worked that i should send it in for repair for a 69.00 charge!

I am not going to pay this for a 2 year old blu-ray player,i could buy a new one for just a little bit more,do any of you guy's have a fix for this problem? I heard somewhere else online it could be a bad diode?

Hi there, I'm looking for some help and hope somebody might oblige. I have an LG BP120 Blu Ray Player which i purchased recently and I notice that very occasionally the picture will go blank (black) for a split second. It happens at unexpected times every so often. I have noticed it on every Blu Ray and DVD I've played on the machine since I bought it. It usually only happens once or twice during playback of a disc. It's just a little annoying and I was wondering if anybody can help me figure out what the problem is. The software is also up-to-date. I look forward to a response and thank you in advance

Whenever I put in X-Men: First Class it says that some features require additional storage (at least 2MB). The player or BD suggests that the player supports additional storage like an SD card or an external HDD. The only thing that I can see that I can add is a thumb drive. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to add external storage to the BDP-620?

Thanks!

I have used a thumb drive, an external hdd, and a sd card (via usb memory card reader). They all work. Personally, I wouldn't bother with an external hdd due to unnecessary power consumption and wear/tear on the drive. Also, the sd card sticking out of the usb card reader is not visually appealing and easy to knock loose (in my case at least). Since some thumb drives are very minimal in size and come in black, that would my preference if cost doesn't matter. But I just use what is laying around or some freebie.

I was prompted for a FW upgrade, which has since caused the player to freeze every 5-10 minutes.

I would like to know if anyone knows what FW I can up/downgrade to, and where I can find it... that being the hardest part for me as LG doesn't even recognize the BD620C as being a product that they make.

The current FW is BD5.277.00.C, previous it was BD5.242.00.C, the current Driver is H08IMN0505. When I googled that it came up with a ton of foreign sites talking about the BD550.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Is there a way of using a PC that the player picks up via the WiFi connection? That's already got an HDD in it and wouldn't require anything sticking out of the player.
