For many months since I purchased my Sony BDP-S580 in Nov 2011, I didn't have any issues at all. A month+ ago I started seeing a completely new problem, and I hadn't changed anything in my setup other than upgrading the firmware on the Blu-ray player (as I typically keep everything up to date).
The problem I am seeing is a major amount of video "flicker" or digital white noise being displayed whenever in the menu level of the player or a disk. Interestingly enough, playback of content from a disk, whether Blu-ray or DVD works perfectly fine. I made a simple video from my phone which you can see at http://www.eph3.com/IMG_0920.MOV
I tried several changes to see the behavior would change. I've tried different HDMI cables, different HDMI inputs into the AV processor, disconnected wired ethernet and connected straight into the TV. None of these changes made a difference. I opened a chat session with Sony Support yesterday and the two suggestions I got from them were to reduce the video resolution and also unplug the device to force a hard reset. The reset didn't do anything, but reducing the resolution seemed to work, but isn't a solution. Personally, I'm suspicious of the latest firmware which was released mid-May (M07.R.0620).
Anyone else seen this problem? And if so, what did you do to fix it? Does anyone know if it is possible to downgrade the firmware?
