For folks who only need Region Free playback for SD-DVDs, word from other testers (I've not actually tried this, myself) is that the same, no-extra-hardware-needed, solution that works for the prior OPPO Blu-ray players will also work with the 103. This is the so-called SuperDisc, a readily accessible free ISO file download which you burn to a disc and run once through the player:
It remains the case that for Region Free playback of Blu-ray discs, hardware has to be added to the player. The 3rd party companies who sell such hardware for the prior OPPO Blu-ray players will undoubtedly be doing the same for the 103. There was a post above indicating one such outfit already has their mod ready for the 103, but we'll have to see how reports go as people start trying these new hardware mods. The hardware mods for Region Free Blu-ray playback invariably also include Region Free SD-DVD playback, so you don't ALSO need the SuperDisc solution.
NOTE: There have been past instances with Region Free hardware mods where a firmware update for the player requires that a matching firmware update for the hardware mod then be applied. Check with whoever makes the hardware mod. For SuperDisc users, typically the effect of the SuperDisc survives a player firmware update, but if not, it is trivial to run it through the player again.
For conspiracy theorists, this has nothing to do with OPPO trying to counter or break the mods and everything to do with the fact that, due to Blu-ray licensing, OPPO can't support/endorse any such mods, such as by testing them in conjunction with development of new firmware. It's no big deal, as the hardware mod makers, up to now, have been able to adjust, as necessary, quite quickly anyway. If you are concerned about this, don't install new player firmware until posters confirm whether a Region Free hardware mod firmware update is also needed for your particular choice of mod, and whether it is already available. Or check with the mod's maker.
