Here's an item that should be of interest. The Warranty for the 103 is a full 2 years.

Are the romote codes on the 103 the same as the 93? I will have both on the same shelf. Thanks.

The updated Remote Codes document is on the support page. Where the buttons are in common (which is largely the case) the codes are the same for all 3 command sets. So change the command set for one of the 2 players. (In battery compartment of remote and in Setup > Device Setup.)

Also, the Source button on the 83/93/95 remote uses the same IR code as the Input button on the new 103/105 remote.

Amongst the very first things I will be testing.

I really didn't think these pups were going to ship until maybe early October so this was my reaction when the email hit: eek.gifbiggrin.gif

I am really impressed with the 2 year warranty. Nowadays very few products carry more than 1 year and many are 90 days (did you hear this, Sony ?). Oppo is showing once more that quality is their business. Looking forward to open the box and start playing with the new toy.

I was about to pull trigger on a Panasonic 65vt50 but after viewing the Sony 4K 84" I will wait for the 2013 models and see if I can afford a TV that can use the most of the Oppo upscaling.

I got on the list for both the 103 and 105. I couldn't believe it when I saw the email before and I had itchy fingers. If I ordered, I gould have gotten probly by this weekend. Oh well.

Looks like the 103 supports digital media renderer capabilities. Would be very appreciative if someone could test this out when they get their new player.

It works like any DMR device. As long as you have a DLNA DMR client, you can push information to the player using your computer. It doesn't act any different from any other DMR device, so there is nothing special or unique.

I'm wondering, when using the 105 as a DAC which is connected to a receiver, and computer using foobar with wasapi support for bit-perfect transfer, will it just be converted back to digital again to run through the DSP. This would defeat its purpose.

No email notification at all here...even if I'm in Canada, no email. Must be sold out...
One question, I got the Energy RC-70's with Pioneer VSX-33, should I be waiting for the 105 or will the 103 be enough for these speakers?
Thanks!

When they start selling to the general public there are no restrictions on where it will be shipped, so yes, the player will be shipping to Canada the same date as the US release.

Could be they filtered out E-Mails based on domain, such as .ca being used for your E-Mail address.

Basically there's nothing special you need to do. Whatever is playing your HDCD disc and generating HDMI output must also be generating an HDMI video signal -- of some sort -- as part and parcel of that output. There's no way for it NOT to have video as part of its HDMI output.
Now when you play an HDCD disc on the OPPO, what you get for video is the Music playback screen generated by the OPPO -- with info about what you are playing (Disc and track info, Gracenote album cover art, and the like). When you do the same thing using an HDMI input from some other player, the video that goes through the OPPO is whatever has been generated by that other player. It may be a black frame, or it may be something more elaborate such as what the OPPO produces for its own playback. The OPPO can overlay its own "on-screen Info" display on top of that showing the characteristics of the input audio and video, but it won't try to replace that input video with it's own type of internally generated Music playback screen.
--Bob

Yes it would seem to have to redigitize again. On my 95 I use analog out (dedicated 2 channel) to my reciever in pure direct mode or a headphone amp. For a movie I may use audyssey with dynamic volume on in which case I have the reciever accepting hdmi. On the surface the primary advantage of using the oppo as a dac would be gained only by using the analog out to a reiever in pure direct mode or analog input on an integrated. But oppo will tell you on there web page that if you primarily use digital outputs that the 103 will be more suited to your use.

The game is a little different this time compared to the 95 vs. 93 decision. That's because the 105 (compared vs. the 103) adds high quality Headphone output as well as additional TYPES of digital audio input. We'll have to see what folks discover in terms of clever ways to use this stuff, but I suspect we are going to find some primarily digital audio users who still find reasons to prefer the 105.

For folks who only need Region Free playback for SD-DVDs, word from other testers (I've not actually tried this, myself) is that the same, no-extra-hardware-needed, solution that works for the prior OPPO Blu-ray players will also work with the 103. This is the so-called SuperDisc, a readily accessible free ISO file download which you burn to a disc and run once through the player:

http://www.multi-region.net/oppo_bdp-83

It remains the case that for Region Free playback of Blu-ray discs, hardware has to be added to the player. The 3rd party companies who sell such hardware for the prior OPPO Blu-ray players will undoubtedly be doing the same for the 103. There was a post above indicating one such outfit already has their mod ready for the 103, but we'll have to see how reports go as people start trying these new hardware mods. The hardware mods for Region Free Blu-ray playback invariably also include Region Free SD-DVD playback, so you don't ALSO need the SuperDisc solution.

NOTE: There have been past instances with Region Free hardware mods where a firmware update for the player requires that a matching firmware update for the hardware mod then be applied. Check with whoever makes the hardware mod. For SuperDisc users, typically the effect of the SuperDisc survives a player firmware update, but if not, it is trivial to run it through the player again.

For conspiracy theorists, this has nothing to do with OPPO trying to counter or break the mods and everything to do with the fact that, due to Blu-ray licensing, OPPO can't support/endorse any such mods, such as by testing them in conjunction with development of new firmware. It's no big deal, as the hardware mod makers, up to now, have been able to adjust, as necessary, quite quickly anyway. If you are concerned about this, don't install new player firmware until posters confirm whether a Region Free hardware mod firmware update is also needed for your particular choice of mod, and whether it is already available. Or check with the mod's maker.
