It just occured to me that 4k upscaling could bring the same aggrivation that DVD upscalers did. Upscaling DVD players were not created equal, some did it well, where the vast majority sucked(thats a techy term).

Could we be facing the same headache when it comes to selecting a BD player capable of 4k upscaling? Or is it so standardized that the end results should be pretty much the same(standard enough to let the displays take care of the conversion)? I have a hard time believing that could be the case, especially when it comes to upscaling DVDs all the way to 4k. 1080p to 4k might be a simple trick, but I'll bet we run into problems when letting the display or a $100 player upscaling to 4k. Of course the easy/safe solution will likely be to get the new Oppo, as they originally made a name for themselves by having a top flight DVD upscaler, and still do in the 93 and 95.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Upscaling BD's 1080P to 2160P is a lot easier to accomplish than upscaling DVD's 480i to either 1080P or 2160P.

I don't understand the need for a 4K upscaling BD player. All 4K TVs have upscaling to 4k built right into them. Like most things in CE Land, you get what you pay for. I would guess that a new Oppo BDP-103 or BDP-105 would do a better job than a Sony BDP-S790. But will those Oppo's be better than the 4K TVs themselves?

And if the Oppos did do a better job - how much better?

IMHO, without ever seeing one in action, I would guess that upscaling a DVD on a 4K TV is going to lead to very questionable results. Especially as the benefit of 4K TV is to increase the viewing angle by sitting closer to the display versus an HDTV of equal size.

In any of the 4K TV demos at IFA or CEDIA - did any of the CEMs show a DVD playing on their 4K TVs? AFAIK, they only showed native 4K content and upscaled HD content.
