Interesting how quick one can fall behind on this interesting thread.Baseball playoffs in NY doesn't help.

So I got the player set up last night and wanted to report back no issues shooting the remote off my 100 inch screen. As it is I never ended up using the only open spot on the rack pulled the old Sony player and two wired power cord and spent the time installing the three wired power cord from my line conditioner to the 103. I hardwired the Ethernet connection as the old player.

More of my take. Love the remote even though there are no illuminated buttons. I've gotten use to two of my remotes that have this.
I know I inquired to the PQ in comparison to other players and started a chain reaction on the thread. One hour of use in comparison to the previous four years doesn't help.
Fore sure the menu looked better than any other menu my tired eyes have looked at. The strangest thing I'd swear the sound was better!
Can't wait to get back In front of my 103 to learn more. R

Unless the remote has changed it should illuminate. Just press the lower right bottom button that says light...

The new remote for the 103 handles this two ways. By default the backlight on the remote only comes on if you press the Light button (lower right). This is for people who are comfortable using the remote by touch, and don't want to be distracted by it lighting up with each button press. It also gives longer battery life.

However if you press and hold that Light button for about 5 seconds (until the backlight flashes), you'll switch the remote into the alternate mode where the backlight comes on with any button press. Do this again to toggle back to the original behavior.

By the way, that Light button also sends an IR code to the player which lets you take a look at, for example, the Front Panel display if you have blanked it out (as with Pure Mode).

Quick Question, Trying to register my Oppo. Where is the Serial number on this thing. I think i am completely missing it, but i Just cant seem to find it. The only thing i have found is a long list of letters and numbers underneath the barcode. Starts with E220. Is that the serial number? its to early to try and figure this out smile.gif

Yes. On the back panel there will be a sticky label which includes a manufactured date, a bar code, and the serial number printed below the bar code.

BDP-103 Observations

First, as to 1080p upscaling, it appears to me when watching the upscaling on Directv, that the quality is as good as blu ray disk. In this regard, I viewed Lord of the Ring's Return of the King and close ups of commentators of one of the recent debates. I have never see TV look this clear, but then again I don't have access to cable and don't know how Directv stands next to other broadcast sources. If you have 5 hours ratio of TV viewing versus playing 1 hour music, this qualitative improvement in the TV alone warrants the expenditure for a BDP-103, particularly where you do not get this ability to upscale Directv using the predecessor BDP-93.

Second, as regards comparing the performance of the 103 to the Denon DVD3800BDCI blu ray player (which has a much higher MSRP), they appear roughly comparable. So I may be putting my Denon up for sale.

It will be interesting to hear about A/B comparisons of the sound quality of the BDP-103 compared to the BDP-105, after the BDP-105 and its superior DAC is released soon.

I compared the 103 DAC to the 95. I certainly enjoy the 95 more so with all musics (discs) that I played so far. From my listening, the 95 has the best DAC. I clearly hear it in tone of voice and separation instruments.

+1. I did some brief listening of the 103 compared to my 93 & 95 and while the 103 shows improvement over the my 93 it is still a step below the 95 in my setup. At least this is what my ears are telling me.smile.gif

I don't think any machine at this price point can beat the OPPO 103 for its picture and sound quality. Although, I would pay extra if they would use ALAC for one of its Codecs. Would this player be capable of it if enough people would request it?

Technically a small matter of programming. Practically, Mediatek would have to show some interest.

Well-All was well until I popped in some SACD's-None of them will play. Every other inputs are good, streaming, USB inputs, etc. I have it setup for SACD=Multichannel, Audio Format=Auto, SACD=PCM. Is there a setting I am missing? The display screen comes up and shows the track information but they will not play

Phew!! It was getting close to Fright Night and had a scare. I did a reset, powered down and all is well again. The Flaming Lips and Steely Dan in multi channel never sounded so good!

Dave,

What output of the 103 are you using? If you are not using HDMI or analog then single layer SACDs will not play. In other words if you are using the optical or the coaxial outputs there will be no SACD playback. The discs will just start then stop (with no audio) continously.

Thanks Bill, After my panic attack, I thought - what would Neuromancer tell me to do, reset and power down of course, worked like a charm.

Album Art,

Sorry to ask another question but I don't get album art. In my 93 it just showed up. None of my SACD icons show up. I have Gracenote enabled. Am I supposed to sign up somewhere or what should I do?

Dave,

I'm glad it was that easy smile.gif. I have played numerous SACDs on my 103 without issue and they sound great.

While patiently awaiting my 103 I got to thinking about the experimental SMB/CIFS support. I realize this is for ease of browsing shares on your network and not having to run a DLNA server but is there any chance this could work in reverse? In other words if I had a drive hanging off the 103’s USB is there any chance it could be shared on to my network? I suspect I may be asking for too much but if you never ask….

It would make updating the external drive much easier. Let’s just say I know, ahem, someone who dropped a 2T drive about six feet while disconnecting it from his BDP-93. Recovering 2T of ISOs was not fun I’m told.

I guess I’d be asking too much for NFS support too.

Woops and thanks like always for the quick reply's! I flipped full speed through the nice manual, but wanted to get things up and running.Figured would go back and do the fine tuning latter.

If I was asked to think of one con of this 103 was gonna be the remote! Now I have nothing in that column.

Hopefully the IR input is not like the DirecTV HR34 where it will only work with an IR sensor/extension. I ask because the manual is a little vague about it. I built a serial driver for the Oppo but I'm finding out that my 2 Denon receivers aren't going to do IP control without intermittent issues and I'm limited to 2 serials without adding an I/O extender. If I can get the Oppo to do IR control properly through a straight cable then I can create a new IR driver.
From the manual:
The BDP-103 features an IR IN port on its back panel. If the player is to be installed in an equipment cabinet
where direct line-of-sight is not available for the remote control, you can purchase an external IR Remote
Sensor and plug it into the IR IN port. Place the sensor head at a location where there is direct line-of-sight to
ensure reliable operation.
Please contact OPPO customer support if you plan to integrate the player into an IR
distribution system. Customer support can provide recommendations on how to properly
connect the control signals.
Thanks.

Answer:

You can use the IR-Out of the Control4 into the IR-IN on the player using a standard mono-mono or stereo-stereo cable. There should be no incompatibilities with this kind of connection.

Best Regards,

Customer Service
OPPO Digital, Inc.

See how great Oppo is? Answered me same day on a Saturday for a non-emergency issue. Oh nevermind you're all owners anyway I don't need to tell you how great they are, maybe the newcomers. Anyway it is NICE to have IR direct cable options and it disables the front IR receiver so you don't get stray IR signals from something else too. So if you don't have any available serial ports and need IR but don't want a stupid IR stuck on the front I'll be making a fresh IR driver for control4 this weekend. My serial driver is already made if you have an available port. Attached is my default key mapping guide which I can customize for each person's needs. BDP105-103-93-83-C4map.pdf 24k .pdf file

My next glitch,
I have played over 100 Blu ray disks on my 93 including Star Trek -played twice (the one with Spock, McCoy and Jim Kirk when they were younger) and no problems. It stops repeatedly at 3 minutes and 34 seconds even after carefully cleaning it on my -103.

There's only one movie that could be and as far as I can tell it's just called Star Trek.

That would be a nice feature, but no, the OPPO is an SMB client, not a server.
