Speaking "abstractly" about general technical issues seems to be within bounds, though. Why certain subtitle types are not working, for example.

I am going to assume here that you are not looking to continue using your PC for this purpose, in which case adding storage to the existing PC that runs JRiver would be the least-expensive and most functional option. In that case, yes, the next best thing, if you want to keep the TV turned off when listening to music, or you just want the benefit of a nice tablet/smartphone-based browsing interface, is to get a DLNA NAS.

Be forewarned, however - a DLNA NAS is not JRiver running on a PC. There are just all kinds of things that JRiver+Gizmo or JRiver+JRemote do better (faster, easier, more reliably) than any other combination of DLNA server and controller. The next best is probably Plex+its controller/player apps. But neither JRiver nor Plex is available in embedded form on a NAS - so those combinations are out.

As a result, you are going to get an embedded DLNA server and you are going to have to mate it with a general-purpose DLNA controller app - and this is where things get ugly. Some controllers and some players just don't get along. Some controllers and the Oppo don't like each other very much either. I would ask around in the Oppo DLNA thread (link below) for folks who use a NAS-based DLNA server and external controller so you can find a combination that works well in aggregate.

But, having been down this path myself - in literally multiple dozens (yes, I DO know what "literally" means) of DLNA server and controller combinations - nothing holds a candle to JRiver and its "sister" controller apps right now, for either functionality or reliability when used with the BDP-103.

I'm noticing a lip sync issue on Avatar 3D but not Avatar 2D or streamed video.

Any suggestions? I apologize if this has been covered already. I tried adjusting audio dely from -80 all the way to plus 200 - I just couldn't seem to get it right. It takes FOREVER to get to a particular in Avatar the way I'm doing it. When I go to the oppo home screen - settings audio - lip sync - every time I want to get back to the scene where he's putting in the command center (ch 3 or 4) I have to play the preview/3d/setup/20th century fox, chapter chapter.... There has to be a better way.

I should mention that I have a 4K TV if that has any impact on audio delay.

It doesn't usually help. Pause/Resume was what got us into the trouble in the first place, after all. The most reliable "fix" is to unplug/replug the HDMI from the Roku to the BDP which is really disruptive to the viewing experience.

In continuing experiments (navigating out of the current movie, back to the Home menu, etc.) I am finding that the Roku player sometimes is locking up, so I am getting suspicious that the problem may all be at that end. I just don't have a way to test it in isolation. I have not found similar complaints (recently) on the Roku forums, and with Oppo supporting the Roku stick, I figured someone else around here might have run into this.

Update on my Youtube issue.
The key to this issue was OPPO/device was not activated as I suspected. The activation sequence never showed up for some odd reason. Played around with my Youtube account on the PC. Spent an hour analyzing everything on my account. Everything looked good and up to date. Did find a part about activate a device but wouldn't let me or save or anything but it seemed as though my legacy device/account was probably updated somehow while fooling around. Went back to the OPPO and the OPPO/device activation key finally showed up. All is well. Both OPPO's work the way I need them.

I do not see on the Oppo web site that the 103 supports Amazon Prime streaming. Will they support in the future?

OPPO has not had any luck getting Amazon to provide a native app. No way to know whether Amazon will become more cooperative down the road.

However, you can access Amazon Prime streaming *NOW* via a Channel on the ROKU Streaming Stick. See the OPPO Digital web site for discounted pricing on the Stick. Or if you already have a ROKU device you can connect it to one of the HDMI Inputs of the 103 if you'd like to have it passed through the 103.

Didn't want pay the extra $$'s for the app. Do the streaming services demand a licensing fee for their app?

Oddly not compatible with all android devices. No problem installing on my droid razr mqxx hd but wont install on my samsung note 8.0.

Annoying, since I use my tablet more than my phone for things like that.

Some streaming service (especially ones with the initials "A.P.") are really only interested in working with the largest of the large equipment providers. How they keep to that population I do not know - they could charge for licensing and then price it way out of anyone else's league, or they could just be uncooperative and not be willing to provide licenses and support to anyone who is not big enough.

You can see this for yourself. Go to this page and then look at the supported product list for "A.P.".

http://www.amazon.com/gp/video/ontv/devices

Looks like a lot of products, huh? Ok - then collapse it to manufacturers rather than products. How long is the list? Here is the complete list for Game Consoles, TVs, BD players, Set-top boxes, and Dedicated streamers:
Microsoft
Nintendo
Tivo
LG
Panasonic
Samsung
Sony
Vizio
Asus
Hisense
Netgear
Roku
...done...

See anyone missing besides Oppo? I do - LOTS - including some much bigger names than "Oppo".
That places the problem pretty squarely in Amazon's court, not Oppo's.

Contact OPPO. They can link you to a Beta APK that you can install on your Samsung which should resolve the incompatibility.

Does anyone know if there are any issues with the Oppo BDP-103 introducing shimmer to the video playback of MKV files? I don't usually watch a lot of mkv files so I've never noticed it before, but lately I've been backing up some Blu-rays and even though they are 1080p/24fps MKV files, there is literally a tonne of shimmer in the image when played back on my Oppo. If I try the files on my PC then there is no shimmer at all!

Is this just the player being a bit crap at mkv playback or could there be some sort of scaling issue? Usually I have my resolution output set to 1080p to upscale DVDs, but I tried switching to Source Direct and the shimmer issues were unchanged.

I do a bunch and have no quality issues. Are you compressing these?

Are the PC and OPPO both playing the files over a network, or both local, or...?

Continuing Youtube saga,

I apologize for butting in as I have found my Youtube issue with multiple OPPOs/TV's.

1. Be sure you are on the correct Network (home) on your PC. I believe this was my main problem.
2. Once you can see the Youtube password on your OPPO, then Enter that into the Youtube box on your PC. Of course you need to be on the youtube.com/activate website to enter this code.
3. If you have an older Youtube account then be sure of your Account Settings and be sure to reset Youtube as your legacy settings (over 2 years old) will then be sure to include additional older OPPO's. Disregard all the other Youtube settings at this time as not yet needed.
5. Try again; it should work even with PC off

I have my cable DVR box connected into the Oppo 105 via HDMI-IN and now I see what people were talking about the video quality of TV broadcasts.

But I seem to have a problem where there is a muting in the audio output after a rewind/fast forward of the program material on my DVR. I'm not saying the audio/video are out of sync, its just that there's a 3-5 sec mute before audio is output. In the meantime, the video plays during this mute interval. Is this normal?

I have tried audio Bitstream or LPCM. Same behavior and I am on the latest official firmware (Dec 5th).

Prior to running your DVR (from TWC/LA? and what make/model of DVR do you have? Motorola infrastructure or SA/Cisco?) through your Oppo, when you rewind/FF did this audio muting NOT occur? Surely you never had audio when you were actually FF or REW, because all DVR's will mute during these control functions and only return audio back when the control function is finished. This typically occurs fairly quickly after the normal image once again appears on the screen, but it's not instantaneous.

So is the 3-5 second mute you're describing when now running through your 105 just somewhat longer than you're used to it being when running the DVR directly to your HDTV/AVR?? You're sure it's that long? No exaggeration?? Does it actually vary in duration?

I own my very own Moxi HD 3-Tuner DVR (TWC is my cable provider) and no, after the fast forward/reverse or skip video, the audio and video came on within a second or so when using my pre-pro(Anthem D2v). But with the Oppo processing in the loop, after a fast forward/reverse or skip the audio is muted closer to 3- 4 seconds while the video is playing. No exaggeration here... After wards, the audio comes back on and everything is fine.

This movie isn't in 5.1 sound on Netflix. You can listen to the matrixed surround sound by switching your AVR to Dolby ProLogic. Not as good as Dolby Digital, though...

The problem with this series is the subtitles. I play an episode, and once it begins I click the Subtitles button on the Oppo remote. The box pops up, I click down and select "English." Unfortunately, nothing happens.

Now, when playing the exact same .mkv file on my laptop using VLC Player, the subtitles display properly.

The Oppo has been amazing so far, playing all kinds of file formats via that external HDD. It's just strange that VLC will display the subtitles (thus proving they're definitely built into the .mkv file), but not my 103.

Any advice? Is this something I should check with the Oppo support people?

Ya same here with the subtitle problem, I'll have to check and see what kind of subtitle file is being used when they don't work on the 103. They work on VLC but on the Oppo 103 I get the subtitle box and check English but none appear.

Yea, I saw that when it said Super HD it wouldnt play through the surrounds. When a movie says 5.1 its better though still not playing through the surround rear speakers.... same with when playing a DVD (non blu ray).... the rear surrounds dont produce sound. I did the test tone and set up and theyre all working. Will I only get the rear surrounds during blu ray play back?

Anyone else having problems with Plex Media Server?

Whenever I try to access my Plex Media Server through the oppo 103, the oppo freezes and requires a reboot. I get passed the first few levels, but when it gets to my folder with 500+ movies, it just freezes. I let it sit for about 5 mins before I decided it was frozen.

When accessing the same content through my windows shares on the oppo, it has no problem and finds all the movies in seconds.

I did the test tone and set up and theyre all working. Will I only get the rear surrounds during blu ray play back?

Netflix "Super HD" is for the video. 5.1 is the audio.

Do not post links to non-public beta firmware. Oppo gave it to you and noone else.

Thanks,

Something must be wrong with netflix. Some shows primarily put the sound through the front left speaker..... others are perfectly fine.... I cant seem to hear any output from the surround rear speakers.... what type of medium will I be able to get all the speakers operational?  I am using HDMI from the 103 to the TV directly. The audio is analog 8 multi channel through the AVR.... so all processing is being done through the 103.

There ARE titles on Netflix where they've screwed up the sound -- the same sound problems are observed, for example, even when streamed through the PS3. Netflix' quality control when putting files onto their streaming server is not the greatest.

That aside, the 103 is not a Surround Sound processor. If you play a 5.1 track you will get output on 5.1 speakers. If you want to get that expanded to 7.1 speakers you will need to feed the sound through an AVR or other device with Surround Sound Processing algorithms like PLIIx.

Similarly, if you play a 2.0 (stereo) track, you will get output on 2.0 speakers -- or 2.1 if you have cabled a Subwoofer *AND* have your main speakers set to SMALL.

Now, there's one exception to this: The 103 includes the DTS Neo:6 algorithm for expanding stereo content into 5.1 surround sound. This only applies to the 5.1 multi-channel Analog outputs. And it limits the data rate for digital audio through the player to 48KHz (even for the Digital audio outputs). So you should leave DTS Neo:6 Mode OFF except when you actually want to use it.

Since your setup is new, be sure to check your audio cabling using the built-in test tones in Setup > Audio Processing Setup > Speaker Configuration. It is easy to get plugged into the wrong jacks. Make sure the audio is coming out of the speaker it is supposed to be coming out of for each test tone.
