Apologies if this has already been discussed...I haven't read through all 2000 pages.
I can't get my 103D to output PCM (converted from SACD) through coax, i get no sound, yet I can get audio via HDMI out. Is that normal? I thought the whole idea of having the option to convert SACD to PCM was to enable output to an external DAC?

SACD and DVD-A cannot be output through SPDIF. Technically a stereo PCM output is possible, but licensing requires that DRM be observed. SPDIF has no DRM.

You can have any number of audio and subtitle tracks embedded in a container and select them via popup menu.

You can have only one external subtitle track per file: must be named identically to the main file, different extension.

I believe external .srt works with M2TS, but I don't remember testing it myself.

I used to use Oshare and it is OK (great for free) but it has been a while, it wasn't progressing so I forgot why I stopped using it. I then tried plex. By far my favorite is Mezzmo but there is always room for improvement.

I've heard Oppo having problem with mkv (especially those with hd audio)...but that was a few years ago.

Oppo has great MKV video playback but has a couple of issues - forced subs don't work so if an alien or Russian starts speaking in their native tongue (if they have one), you won't see the English subtitles pop up. It also can't play LPCM audio tracks - you can convert them to another format such as flac with apps like makemkv. If they could fix those two issues it would be wonderful but since they haven't addressed those yet, I don't think we'll see a fix anytime soon.

It has no problem with any Dolby or DTS that I've thrown at it and I've thrown a lot at it as I have a pretty large collection on MKV.

You can't stream ISOs if that is what are asking.

The fine print on that Amazon Promo requires that the eligible product be "shipped and sold by Amazon". That's true for the BDP-103, but not for the BDP-103D or BDP-105D, which are available for purchase on Amazon, but are "sold by OPPO Digital". For some stupid reason, Amazon is also showing the Promo on the pages for those two players even though they are definitely *NOT* eligible under the rules of the Promo.

Furthermore, the fine print page for the Promo implies that the ONLY eligible products are the nine products displayed on that same, fine print, page. The OPPO BDP-103 is NOT shown on that page.

I just got off Chat with Amazon Customer Support and they said the BDP-103 is indeed eligible for the Promo (and the 103D / 105D are not), but I'm not convinced.

When I try an experiment with ordering the Sony player shown on that fine print page, the very last step -- the Place Your Order page -- displays an "Important Message" about the fact that it will be 35 days before you even get the confirmation email that the Promo has been issued to your account.

But if you try that same experiment with the BDP-103, you do NOT get that "Important Message" -- or at least I didn't when I tried it 15 minutes ago.

So you may want to get on with Amazon and get some written confirmation -- e.g., the Chat Transcript -- that the Promo really does apply.

--------------------------------------------------

Just to be clear here, any screw up that has actually happened here is entirely Amazon's doing. OPPO Digital has no role in this promo.
--Bob
I purchased a BDP-103 last Wednesday. I saw the message about the 10 percent back, but I did not receive it in my purchase. After reading about it here at the forum, I contacted Amazon, and they gave me the credit.

I agree with what Bob observed...they mention the credit on the 103 page, but don't mention it in the 'tell me more' page.

^ Well it's good Amazon are honoring the promo offer if you call to confirm, but it wouldn't surprise me if some folks don't find out until some point after the 35 day delay that the promo did not "take" for their order.

So did they give you an instant credit of 10%? Or did they just say the credit amount will post to your Amazon account 35 days from now? I.e., that it is only usable against some future purchase after that point? (Which is how the promo is actually written.)

As pointed out by other posts, this apparently doesn't apply to the 103D. However, I still ordered it from Amazon instead of directly from Oppo as I could put it on my Amazon card and get 12 months, 0% interest for purchases $599 and up (which the 103D just happens to be). That made the purchase a little easier to make what with Xmas eating up all my available cash!

Of course, there IS a downside to buying the unit around Xmas. My wife wants me to put it under the tree and not open it until Xmas day!

I went ahead and ordered a 103 on Amazon and called about the 10% back and the guy insisted, even after I said that it doesn't say anything about a 10% back during checkout and I haven't received an e-mail, that I would get 10% back in 35 days. He made a note that I called and that the product page says it's eligible and if I don't get it back in 35 days to call and they'll add it. What to do? Try again and see if I can get another service rep?

^ The way the promo is written, they aren't supposed to send the confirmation notice for 35 days. Kind of weird, but that's what it says on the "fine print" page.

I even mentioned to him that if I buy one of the items listed in the promotion, that it mentions the 10% back during checkout, but doesn't for the Oppo. I guess I'll just wait and see.

Considering purchasing one of these units and 2 questions I have

1) Is Netflix streaming on this any better then say a PS3 or Apple TV? Does it improve PQ? or does PQ improvement mainly apply to BlueRay? 90% of my viewing is NetFlix and the Tv I'll be using is an 8 year old 50" Samsung Plasma (1080p 6-series)

2) how would you rate the overall Streaming/DLNA capabilities compared to a Sonos? One of the reasons I'm considering this is for the ability to play music from Pandora, Spotify and music stored on my PC. I'm looking to control/select songs from my Nexus 7 and want easy to use

Thanks

The 103 does an excellent job with video processing when it comes to upscaling DVDs. BluRay players generally give good results on BluRay disks, with little difference in PQ. I see no difference in picture quality on my 46" LED set when I compare Netflix streaming from the 103 versus a Roku 2 XS.

I have no experience with Sonos, but there is no Spotify app on the 103. Pandora works fine. Streaming from the PC (including DSD files) works great unless you have network issues.

I find Netflix, for the most part, has good PQ. Sometimes its a bit rough... Blu Rays are excellent as one would expect. Pandora is seamless 99% of the time. I run an Ethernet off the router to a switch then feed the Oppo, monitor, & AVR. I just wish my On Demand service had better PQ....(nothing to do with the Oppo)..I run out of the STB directly to the monitor.... reason being, I don't always want to turn on everything, AVR, Oppo, amp, etc.

Hi everyone,

Love the community here at AVS!

Right to the point. I just upgraded to a 65inch led Insignia calibrated by the geek squad, a Pioneer Elite SC-75 and a 9.1 home theater system. Pictures to follow soon!

My question is, I have a PS3, PS4 and now an OPPO. My wife and I tested this bad boy with the Amazing Spiderman 2 bluray and God we can't tell a difference! Maybe I'll have to read this whole thread starting at 2012 lol

Am I doing something wrong? Or should I send this back and replace to the Darbee edition?

I have it all plugged in correctly straight to the receiver from the HDMI 1 which is the Marvell processing video.

I will be putting tonight the new turtles movie and we will see how it flows.

Any help is appreciated!

Welcome to AVSForum.

You're playing a Blu-ray disc? We don't expect much difference between players in that case.

SACD sometimes sends multi-channel, sometimes only stereo

When playing a SACD that has multi-channels on my 103, I noticed that the display said 'type 5.0'. When I looked at my preamp (Anthem AVM 50), it said the input was left and right channels only. I repeated the procedure with a PS3, and the Anthem reported multi-channel input. I went back to the Oppo with a different multi-channel SACD, and this time, the display said 'type 5.1'. This time, the Anthem reported multi-channel input, as well.

Does anyone have a clue as to why the first SACD was only sending left and right channels, even though it saw it as a multi-channel SACD? Is there such a thing as a 5.0 SACD?

Thanks in advance,
Ron

They gave me a credit on the card I used to pay for the 103. I probably sidestepped the 35 day wait because a) I didn't see that part, and b) I sent them an email directly. Anyway, a 10% credit for a player like the 103 is a beautiful thing.

Does anyone have a clue as to why the first SACD was only sending left and right channels, even though it saw it as a multi-channel SACD? Is there such a thing as a 5.0 SACD?

Thanks in advance,
Ron
Ron, there are 5.1 SACDs, 5.0 SACDs, 3.0 SACDs, 2.0 (stereo) SACDs.

If you set your Oppo SACD audio out to read the multichannel layer as priority, the 103 will ouput it from its HDMI out, and also from the multichannel analog out. Your Anthem pre/pro should be playing that multichannel layer as recorded on the SACD's selected layer, with the corresponding number of channels.

I don't know if you are getting sound from only your two front speakers, or from what is in the SACD's layer.
And if it plays correctly, but doesn't display properly, I just don't know.

Ron, what's your SACD Priority set to on your Oppo player? The Priority will decide what layer the Oppo gives preference to when playing an SACD. Also, remember, some SACD's contain both 2-ch and multi-ch layers, in addition to a CD layer. However, other SACD's can just contain a multi-ch or a 2-ch layer. A "type 5.0" just means the LFE (Low Frequency Effect aka "deep bass" channel) is not present in the multi-ch layer.
