Like the Oppo's for example. What is different besides the connections or streaming features? Is the picture quality much better? More noticeable?

IMO, the main differences are better audio DACs (only important if you use analog audio outs), DVD upconversion, build quality, reliabilitty, customer support (all top notch with Oppo). If you just want a player for BluRay discs, Netflix/Vudu streaming, and will use digital audio outs (HDMI), then good quality reasonably priced players like Panny 220 and Sony 390 or 590 will be all you need.
