I wonder why Oppo wouldn't tell consumers they were going to make a Darbee version of the 105? What's the big secret? Were they thinking their sales of 105's would drop if the word got out too soon? I guess that's just a business ploy to remain silent. Many companies do the same thing these days. A number of 105 consumers were already asking if they could send their 105's back to Oppo to get the Darbee upgrade to their machines...not sure Oppo is going to implement a retrofit.

Update: It also looks like Oppo updated the usb dac hardware to support dsd64 and dsd128 audio streams.

There was no "retrofit" for the 103, or ability to send the 103 back in exchange for the 103D. Of course you can always buy a stand-alone Darbee if you already have a 105.

I wish I knew more about this, I'm pretty happy with the video for bluray, I wonder if satellite hd and poor BD would be improved? In my experience overprocessing does more harm than good... Look in the FAQ and in the first post of the 103D thread for review links. Also in the Darblet thread, which has been running since before the 103D was released.

The Darbee effect is subtle when used properly, but has a growing fan base, particularly among front projector owners.

I like messing with it, but I could live without it.

Thanks, after reviewing those posts I've already recovered from my spurt of buyers remorse... another few days and I'll be able to part with the 95 eek.gif

I currently use my 105 with the first gen of Darbee and have had some connectivity issues but generally it works.

Is there going to be an improvement in video quality with the 105Darbee oppo as opposed to a 105 with a Darbee added after the fact?

You are going to see almost the same changes between the 105 and 105D that also apply to the 103 vs 103D.
Bill McClain, (Unoffical OPPO FAQ Extraordinaire) has given a list of differences.
I will slightly modify his explanation to fit the 105D scenario...

How is the BDP-105D different from the BDP-105?

The BDP-105D subtracts:
~the Marvell Qdeo video processor

...and adds:
~the Darbee Visual Presence video processor
~the Silicon Image VRS ClearView video processor
~updated USB DAC interface to support DSD64 and DSD128

...and replaces:
~the remote with a new version with a Darbee button

All other aspects and functions of the two models are identical.

The BDP-105 is limited to DSD 64/2.8 MHz files for attached media only, not from a different source using USB DAC interface . The BDP-105D adds native DSD 64/2.8 Mhz and DSD 128/5.6 Mhz support to USB DAC interface from a different source.

That's not true. DSD was never supportd on the usb dac interface on the 105. The 105 could only playback dsd streams via cifs/smb shares, usb drive, or shiny disc.

Is the DSD update to the USB DAC a hardware change? The way it's being discussed I'm assuming it is, but I want to make sure.

Likely. J River had a comment posted online in their Wiki. Oppo Digital will be updating their BDP-105 for DSD from USB devices, and their next universal player will support DSD via USB (DoP). The BDP-105D it seems is that next universal player.

I don't think anyone would really have an issue if it just added Darbee processing, it's the addition of DSD processing that's freaking people out.

Regardless, I suspect a lot of BDP-105s will be hitting eBay shortly, some from people who really want DSD, some who just want the latest and greatest, so it might be a good opportunity to pick up a lightly used one.

Hell, I might put mine up there! I actually really like DSD, and didn't realize my 105 couldn't handle the DSDx2 files I had. It's not a lot, but there are more to come...

I wish the new Oppo had Spotify as well, that would have sold me on the new model, along with all the other updates.

This looks great as the new top-dog universal player/DAC but I have to wonder how long the shelf life is going to be. Yes, it upscales to 4K but we're going to have real 4K streaming content from Netflix and others shortly and CES showed a bunch of products with HEVC/H.265 built in. Six months from now we'll be looking at 4K Vizio TVs in Costco for $1000. There was no update for Blu-Ray announced last week but that doesn't mean that this player shouldn't be the center piece of the 4K content evolution.

HEVC/H.265 is just a new codec. Oppo can add this in a new firmware build. No added hardware is necessary. The newly added DSD capability to the 105's usb dac interface (105D) required a hardware change to the player. Big difference. It's my opinion that if you're going to add a dac interface to a media player, and the dac in that player supports dsd, then the interface should support dsd. Oppo probably regrets not implementing the proper hardware in the 105 to support dsd on its usb dac input. I don't think they had the wisdom of where the future of dsd and consumer demand for the format were a couple years ago. Heck, a couple years ago, Oppo was just a blu-ray player company. They've expanded their product into a full fledged network media player today.

The headlines I have read state that the BD 4K standard might be finalized in 2014.
IMO, early 2015 for 4K BD looks like a best cast scenario.

There won't be any serious 4K content in the next year to two years. There will be bits and pieces here and there but nothing substantial that would challenge the relevance of the marketplace for this type of product or any Bluray player for that matter. I think people are exaggerating what 4K will be in the near future and how much content is going to be available anytime soon.

It's very premature to discuss H.265, epecially thinking its just a firmware update. The 105D's USB-B interface uses new hardware. You can still use J River or like to play DSD as PCM via USB-B interface, but now this BDP-105D can support native DSD over PCM (DoP). No retrofits. The BDP-105 will still be sold for people who don't need DVP or native DSD over PCM (DoP).

Also, the existing 105 supports DSD playback from any attached media (HDD, thumb drive) the only thing the new hardware adds is DSD sourced from another device.

According to Oppo it will play any DSD file on attached storage. I haven't had any issues with any of the DSD files I have on hand, and I have nearly 2TBs worth on an attached drive. Where are u seeing different?

Go here and download a DSD128 sample and tell me how it plays on your system.

^^ There was a discussion on this forum months ago about Oppo supporting dsd128, and a few users said that dsd128 files played back at half speed on the 105.....thus incorrectly. DSD128 is is a 1-bit bitstream sampled at 5.6 MHz.

The clock in the OPPO can't do DSD128. The Asynchronous USB in the BDP-105D can do DSD64 and DSD128 as the computer, not the player, is doing the clocking. Bandwidth limitations keep it from doing DSD256, however.

So, with regards to dsd audio, the 105D only does the clocking when you playback a dsd64 or dsd128 file via smb, usb drive, or shiny disk? Can the 105D do dsd128 via the other methods I described above?

When using DSD over USB, SMB or physical disc the clocking is done in the MediaTek decoder. The decoder was built around the SACD DSD specifications, which is DSD64, so there was no anticipation for needing to support DSD128 or DSD256.
