Quick question. Is it better to set the output resolution to 1089P or leave it set to Auto by default? If set to 1089P, will it automatically upscale everything or will it do that in the Auto setting as well?

There is no setting to turn off upscaling; Auto just re-negotiates the resolution at every startup. I would just set it to 1080p.

Yes, there is. It is called 'Original Resolution'. Here is a break down of the different choices:
Auto - auto negotiate with your TV for best resolution and scale everything to that resolution
Original Resolution: turn off scaler and output native resolution of the video
480i,720p,1080i,1080p: scale everything to the selected resolution.

I guess I should qualified my statement by saying that there is no fully functional source direct mode. Original Resolution setting doesn't work for USB / DLNA and always results in 1080p / 60Hz output to a 1080p display, so really you're only turning off upscaling for DVDs.

“I will bite. The Netflix stream resolution and audio format depends on which film you are watching. Not all videos are offered in 1080p. Nor are all videos offered in DD+ 5.1 audio (and even if they do, you may need to select DD+ 5.1 audio manually). Also, make sure your internet speed is up to task, e.g. have enough bandwidth for 1080p video. You probably need somewhere around 5 to 7 mbps+ bandwidth.

Put this movie to your queue and see how high your stream quality can be: 'Example Short 23.976'"

Ok I watched that clip. I'm just not sure what I was supposed to find out. It sent loud test sounds to all 5 speakers and my sub. Display said 3000 Kbps and Res was 1280x 720. But what does that mean?

The video will show you the current bitrate and resolution as Netflix player automatically ramps up if your network have enough bandwidth. You need watch it for over a minute or so to see where it stops (the max bitrate is 5800mbps if your ISP joins OpenConnect). If it didn't go any further than you saw, it means your internet speed is the limiting factor. The test tones are only available in 5.1 audio track. So, that means you have the DD 5.1 audio. You can switch to 2-ch stereo audio to avoid the test tone. I assume you know how to switch audio and subtitles in Netflix player smile.gif

To get 1080p resolution, the stream bitrate needs to be 3850kbps. Then there are 4300 and 5800 SuperHD which depends on if your ISP joins OpenConnect or not. Also, make sure your BD player is outputting 1080p signal (use your TV to verify the output resolution from the player). If it is outputting 720p for whatever reason, I think there is a small chance that Netflix player will automatically stop at 720p resolution as well.

You never told us what kind of internet connection you have and the bandwidth cap. for 3850kbps 1080p streaming, you probably need at least 5mbps download speed.

I watched the clip all the way to the end and the 3000 Kbps and 1280x720 is as high as it goes. I am not sure I know how to check on the TV itself to see what resolution is coming from the player. I do know to hit Display on the player remote to see the Netflix resolution.

I am in a very rural area and have Centurylink DSL at its highest offering here - 8 Mbps. But maybe neighbor traffic is lowering that since I have seen 4-5 Mbps displaying while watching something in Netflix or Amazon.

Having trouble getting the software upgrade to complete. The Sony web page suggests downloading the update UPDATA_M15R0138.ZIP and copying the files to a CD. Where would I find that file? Couldn't find it on the Sony website and Google only finds it in Asian and European pages. Do I really need this update since everything is working?

Then, that's likely your issue -- the internet speed. Netflix player automatically adjust the bitrate to fit your current network speed.

Post 805 by Foxbat121. I tried to quote it in my post but it wouldn't let me. Plus I did talk to my ISP who said the 8mbps is the highest speed I can get currently but they are working on trying to get their customers more in the next few months. She also said I needed 10 Mbps to get streaming 1080p.

Hi, I'm looking to buy a Blu-Ray player to replace my PS3 and I have 2 questions :

- I have a Sony W9, does the Triluminos function has a real interest or is it only for new Sony Blu-Ray Mastered in 4K?

- On my PS3, the gradations are not very smooth sometimes (for example, in water). I saw that this year no Blu-Ray player has SBM (Super Bit Mapping) so how are the gradations? Is there any improvement over a PS3?

Anybody have issues playing AVI files? I have Windows Media Center and Serviio running. They both show up as seperate icons in the menu (photo, music, video) and I can browse both and play MOV, MP4, etc., but no luck with AVI. I get the "file corrupt or unsupported" error or "no supported file in directory". They're not DRM files as they are mostly home movies.

AVI files are simply containers. What are the video codec inside those files?

I am looking to pick up a new BDP this week and have noticed that both the panny 230, and ps3 offer crunchyroll as a service. However I do not see it anywhere for the s3100 or the s5100. Is there a way for me to install their service on either of these devices? I have read through most of this thread and the s5100 looks like a good choice for me, but a local bestbuy has the s3100 open boxed for $85. I still haven't decided which to get and I do often have anime shows running for kids, the panny 230 offers it but the UI seems far more slugglish than that of the sony devices.

I suppose I'll have to get back to you on that. Can you recommend a tool that would parse out the codec information?

Thanks.

Bought a Panasonic TC-P60ST60 (TV) and Panasonic DMP-BDT230 (BR player). Amazon app on both is a joke since there's no DD 5.1 or "watchlist" capability. From my research, this is a longstanding issue that Panasonic & Amazon have no inclination to do anything about. The TV is a keeper (awesome PQ), but the BR player is nothing special.

Having said that, I was thinking about getting the BDP-S5100 since it does have DD 5.1 and "watchlist" with the Amazon app. However, that leaves MP3 playback over DLNA, which I often use. Can anyone comment on this specific functionality for the BDP-S5100? I understand there is no cover art. What about playback modes? Is there a random/shuffle mode? How are MP3s organized, etc?

Thanks for any insight.

There is no shuffle. Serviio dlna does support playlists so you could shuffle the files first in the playlist. Mp3 are organized based on the DLNA server but seem to respect folder and track order if track number are first.

I had an issue while watching my first Bluray disk movie last evening. The tv screen went black, sound kept on going. I hit the rewind on the BDP remote to go back a minute, hit play again and had picture and sound again. But this kept repeating thruout the movie every 15 minutes or so. I have only had this BDP for a week but have watched several DVD type movies plus Netflix and Amazon Instant movies with no issues. Any ideas what is causing the black screen on seemingly just the blueray disk movies? Specs of what equipment I have are below.

TV - 2010 Sony Bravia HDTV KDL40S504
AVR - Pioneer Elite VSX43
BDP - Sony S5100

BDP connected to AVR which goes out to TV - all are HDMI

Thank you so much for your quick response. I do have a high speed in use in all places. But I will turn that Deep Color off. Sorry for being dumb but do I turn that off in my BDP or AVR or maybe both devices?
