Guess the guys at cnet have finally figured out after years that the panasonic UI isn't so great after all and now prefer Sonys XMB !

Funny how last year they were all about the panasonic players UI ... But not this year. What's funnier is that neither sony nor panasonic changed anything on their UI from last year .... So it just goes to show that these journalist reviews are pretty much a waste of time.

There is a known issue with the Amazon app on the Panasonic TV (this was told to me during a support chat session). In my case, it is a TC-L58E60. The app simply doesn't work at all, and the UI is different than the UI on the Sony s5100 player. I actually like the app much better on the BDP.

I purchased a Sony BDP-S5100 DVD player about 4 months ago and set it up in my home theater and used it one time. Tonight I wanted to look at the new Star Trek DVDI had purchased, turned the unit on and it started fine got a new software upgrade and the typical streaming video screens. Then I hit the open close button on the remote and the tray failed to open. Tried everything, called Sony's chat line tried everything they suggested, no joy. When the remote button is pushed the display shows open a clanking noise is heard then close is displayed another clanking noise then loading is displayed followed by empty and then home in the display window. Anybody else having this problem? My wife or I have disposed of the box and probably the BB receipt. Sony chat suggested I contact the service center but all my experience with them has been bad.

Anybody got any suggestions. $119.00 to watch 1 DVD is a little expensive.

did you try the eject button on the player itself?

it looks like the player eject mechanism is dead. You will need to get it repaired one way or another.

Tried everything. Mechanism is trying to work (I can hear it) but something is jammed. If I could get into the unit I am fairly sure I could fix it. if I can find the box BBuy will get it back. If SONY was the company they used to be they would send me a replacement and I would send them the bad unit. As it is they want me to handle all the shipping and so on. Very disappointed.

BB would have your purchase in their computer. But after 4 months, they may say you have to deal directly with Sony. It's under warranty from Sony, so you should be fine dealing with the service center.

Best Buy has always been good to me about purchases. I'm a rewards member and use their card when I make purchases there. You shouldn't have any issues if you don't have your receipt.

Best Buy is also great (or has been so far) about price matching. I can almost always find a product online (e.g., at Amazon) that is cheaper and they will match it.

If you didn't take the Extended Warranty, then you're not in BB's Computer, therefore a receipt is required. Elsewise you have to deal with Sony Directly. (Where again, they may or may not require a receipt.)
Did you try unplugging the power from the wall for a few minutes?

As long as you are a reward Zone member(or whatever they call it now) it is in their system now. But their return policy has been reduced. 14 or 15 days for normal returns and only 45 days for the upper Reward Zone, which used to be sixty. Without the extended warranty I would be surprised if BestBuy would do anything after four months. but it can't hurt to ask. Otherwsie Sony will cover it. And paying for return shipping for warranty repair is the norm with most companies so that is nothing new. Typically the buyer pays to send it to the manufacturer and the manufacturer pays to ship it back.

Anyone else having problems with the remote for their S5100? Lately, I need to be 4 feet away and directly in front of the player for it to work. It used to work fine. And no, it is not the batteries.

Yes, I'm having exactly that problem with our essentially-new barely-used s5100. Two different Sony Blu-Ray remotes with fresh batteries no longer work at a distance much greater than 4-6 feet. This points a finger at the player's sensor rather than the remote(s) (and the remotes work fine with a different Sony player). Since nothing has changed with our player's location it appears to be some sort of outgassing problem or something similar - something is making the player's sensor less responsive and, in our particular case, it certainly is not caused by actually using the player thus probably cannot be attributed to electronic infant mortality failure of the sensor.

I'm considering the purchase of a Sony 55W900A and since that supports x.v.color I'd like to get a compatible BD player. The S5100 seems like a winner, but the manual doesn't explicitly state x.v.color support for BD's nor is an obvious setting available and a recent LG player manual states that x.v. is only supported for AVCHD files, not BD-ROM. Can anyone confirm x.v.color BD support in the S5100?

I've read through the thread, but didn't notice anything related to x.v. so I apologize if that already came up in the thousands of replies and I missed it.

You might try turning off any energy-saving fluorescent lights that are in the room.

One of my Blu-ray players (not a Sony, though) won't recognize many commands if light from a florescent lamp shines on its sensor. It works fine if the lamp is shaded or off.

Unfortunately no lights were on and sunlight was not impacting the player - this is also a new problem (for a player that's, like, a week old); the control worked fine when we removed the player from its box and set it up about same time of day as today's failure (I was playing with the internet stuff today to see what else there was "out there" and noticed the weak sensor response - tried another Sony BluRay (nonWIFI) player's remote and that, too, had the identical problem though both remotes worked fine with the older player). I'm actually somewhat convinced the problem really is outgassing from plastic or circuitry that is reducing the IR sensitivity just as a filter would - whenever I get back to the problem I'll probably simply try cleaning the inside surfaces with something like a Q-tip, etc.

Did you do the software update you mention in your original post? In some cases the player will expect a update to happen before it lets you do something else. If you don't want that behavior you can disable software update, turn player off and then back on again.

I would also try a factory reset on the player.

If that all fails then it sounds like the mechanical mechanism has failed. Sony will honor the product for 1 year.

If your talking about extended color support xvYCC then yes its supports this but only with a compatible sony BD "mastered in 4k" and a compatible Sony 2013 TV is used together. Sony call this TriLuminos .

started looking at the S590. Pretty decent features, prices coming down, seems like it could work.

Looks like the S5100 completely redesigned Pandora. I logged on today and I had to resign into Pandora and the interface is totally different than it was yesterday. Thumbing up and down is now easier, and the time between tracks hasn't changed and is still acceptable..............BUT, I waited 5 songs and it never went to the screen saver screen......WTF??? This is totally unacceptable Sony/Pandora .

EDIT: I went 27 minutes with no screen saver. I will wait 1 week for a fix, then it's out of my setup and will be on eBay.

My unit (actually a BDP-BX510) is freezing up playing certain Netflix movies.  The only thing I can do is unplug the unit and plug it back in.  I have the latest software updates, so I don't know what else I can do.  Has anyone seen this, or this a defective unit?

The only time I've seen lockups is when there's a heavy load on my router / internet connection. Often happens when I'm downloading something large from another computer on my home network. Other than that, the Netflix app has been very reliable.

I prefer no screen saver since I use DLP and LCD sets. Is there even an option to choose whether a screen saver is used or not?

In the Sony's general settings there is an option which is turned on. There is no such setting within the Pandora app itself. Prior to the update the screen saver on Pandora would activate after a song and a half.

today, I was watching a rented movie on vudu, and stopped it, then went to go back into it and found that none of the online sony content worked on both the 590 and 3100, the internet check is ok, i can access the dlna server on the LAN, the roku and other devices can access the internet. I wonder if sony's network has broken again, since both sony products are having issues of the same type.

Yes, appears sony servers are down. This prevents the player for getting a key to access the online content from netflix, amazon, Vudu, etc. note. Sony doesn't host those services for Sony players ... Merely does initial authentication.
Kisakuku and tachophilliac like this.

I bought a roku 3 a month or 2 back, and haven't regretted it. It has much more content then the sony players and it's more reliable. The only reason i still stream with the sony players is the netflix has the autoplay interface for tv shows. If i just want to let them play I'll use the sony player instead of manually starting each with the roku's interface.

Other then that the roku is great!

Thanks for that, it's good to hear. I'm just over messing around with the S5100 for Pandora & Amazon as it always seems to be something lately. Time for me to add a device that only does streaming and let the Sony do what it does best, just play BDs.

You also have the option of DLNA with plex on the roku. install Plex media server on mac or windows, if linux exists for their server, install that one. Then install the plex channel. Also if you want youtube support, while roku doesn't support youtube natively, install the youtube channel in plea and then you can stream youtube on the roku through the plex channel. Also you have to log in to youtube by plea on the computer to access your account.

I find it works well, and i find the roku is much faster then the sony loading stuff. Stuff like pandora, amazon prime netflix all have nicer, and snappier interfaces as well. The roku 3 also plays games, and has a usb, and micro sd slot for expansion, and local media playback. To get usb playback, you must install the usb channel.

Hope this helps get you started on your research smile.gif
