I'm looking for a Blu-ray player that can show me, via the on-screen display, what the resolution is for the video. Anything from 480p to 1080p, including being able to distinguish between 1080p and 1080i.
Does anyone know of any players that can do that? Or any computer software solutions?
The sony S790 has best display on screen.
You don't really need the player to tell you what it OUTPUTS (which is what the Sony does): you have a good idea from what you choose during set-up (if you pick 1080p it won't output 1080i and upscales everything) and most receivers and displays tell you what's coming in.
Unless you actually mean the SOURCE resolution (which 480p isn't)...
The Sony S790 has a source direct mode, which will show what is being output, whether it's 480i, 1080i or 1080p.
