Looks like Oppo is going to start incorporating Darbee technology into it's players. Should be a good match.

The only thing mentioned is a demo, not a shipping product. Notice the complete lack of specifics in that press release. smile.gif

Given Oppo's predictable conservative development cycle (which I like) , about the end of 2014.

Traditionally if OPPO will have a new product out within the next 6 months, you will see them at CEDIA. So you may have some kind of preview or announcement as early as next week.

Cool. That would be great, falling right into when I'll want to upgrade.

If it helps the very poor DVD section (compared to the 83) then I may be interested. I have found the DVD picture on my 103 to be flat looking without depth.......that the 83 has......and also the DVD picture on the 103 looks like there is some type of processing that makes the picture looks like it was DNR'd severely. The picture is not close to the 83 on DVD (Sharp, with lots of depth) ......Blu ray picture quality is the same on both players.

I AM using the Darbee since November 0f 2012 and couldn't de-couple it anymore from my projector setup nor the 5020 Kuro. The Darbee ought to be a de rigueur technical crutch for practically all giant-screen projection. For Oppo to engage the Darbee's service as the newest match of visual heaven, doesn't come at all as an astonishing surprise. Its almost bound to be. But what I'm intrigued about for the last two months is this declaration that the Darbee might have a formidable rival, though there's no real-world demo that demonstrates this, yet. I'm talking about the MARSEILLES VIDEO CHIP which the Technicolor company has touted as a new upscaling standard (for both SD, 1080p & 4K). To this date only the Toshiba BDX-6400 Blu-ray/media player unit incorporates this on a commercial scale. I haven't owned the Toshiba, nor is there any user comments on it on Amazon, hence I'm intrigued by what exactly can it do, and feel a bit frustrated that the Toshiba unit is flying off so under the discernible radar when it might be a breakthrough BD unit. I owned nine BD units and could cite the Oppo as far away brilliant on pure picture terms from all the others - the only exception being the Sony ES1000 BD. So for Oppo to use Darbee looks very promising, especially if its retain its $499 retail. I'm looking forward to hearing more about the Marseille in the Toshiba BDX-6400 from the direct users......

The Darbee is a contrast/sharpness enhancer depending on the mode. The bit about Marseilles even hyped by Technicolor means very little as it involves Toshiba which has a bad track record with users. Today supposedly at CEDIA you will find out more details about the BDP-103D. smile.gif

I thought some folks were putting two Darbees in the chain with good results? Wonder how this would pair up with an existing Darbee?

Hi Everybody

It might be to early to answer this question, but will the Stand alone darbee units have any additional aspects that the Oppo 103D doesn't have?

Thanks

Great news!

Press release info.:

"The BDP-103 Darbee Edition (BDP-103D) is the latest addition to OPPO's award-winning line of Blu-ray Disc™ players. Based on the successful OPPO BDP-103 player and aided by Darbee Visual Presence (DVP) technology, the BDP-103D takes home theater beyond accuracy and brings exceptional depth and realism to the visual experience....thanks to the patented DVP technology, the BDP-103D can embed stereoscopic depth cues into the video and deliver an enhanced image when the user turns on one of the three Darbee enhancement modes.

The changes made to the video are adjustable so that the result can range from being very subtle to very noticeable, and the DVP technology analyzes the video in real time and enhances visual depth and detail in such a way that it does not alter the calibration of the home theater system. The BDP-103D unifies the often conflicting goals of an ideal home theater: reference quality accuracy to express the filmmaker's original intent, and tweaks to suit the viewer's personal tastes."

I confirmed this by calling Oppo. The new player will be released in Oct of Nov. No price yet. They were not sure if they were creating a 105D yet.

Glad I did not order an Oppo a few weeks ago. Waiting for this baby.

^ That is the same info as published earlier on a press release from DarbeeVision. You should check Oppo Digital web site which shows the BDP-103D for $599. smile.gif

Good question. In addition, is there anything that this player can do that the darbee can't (wrt darbee only)?

Another thing. Would it be advisable to purchase one of these if you have a darbee in your system already?

I went to the Darbee website to find out what it is all about. Obviously it is about edge contrast. They have some photos that you can see with and without Darbee. The Darbee ones look like a photo that has been overenhanced with Photo Shop unsharp mask. I hope the feature is defeatable. People like me won't like it.

$599! eek.gif

For $100 more than my current 103 I really wish I could have this 103D instead.

Completely defeatable. Out of box the Darbee is off. OPPO is always about reference quality first and foremost.

The images you see on the site are more extreme examples. You can adjust the level of the mode. Darbee is either contrast enhancement or sharpness enhancement or a blend of both.

check out this recent review Darbee DVP 5000 Darblet review by Martin Pipe Sept 21, 2013

The best description of how this works can be gathered from the Home Theater Geeks 135: Darbee's Vision - Published on Nov 5, 2012 shown below:

Scott Wilkinson talks with the CEO of DarbeeVision about his new video enhancement processor.

Unlikely. On the other hand, the resale market in OPPO is such that you could probably sell the 103 and buy the 103D for an out of pocket cost that might feel like an upgrade.

interesting interview. Mr Darbee seemed very honest and forthright in his explanation of the product. He also gave me the impression that he knows his stuff and is, as you might expect, very intelligent. I have a darbee and can say that I like it at about 70% on hd mode. It surprises me how much better an already good looking blu ray can look when processed by the darbee. For those considering the oppo unit, I say it is well worth spending the extra $$$. Lets face it, oppos are not cheap to begin with, but for a little extra you can get an added feature that makes a difference, which you are obviously looking for if you are looking at an oppo in the first place.

It is quite amazing how many people like you do like it. Many hard-core elite calibrationists endorse it. It's unique. Of course, Lumagen's new VPs also have it. That alone is quite an endorsement.

Hi again

Im in a kinda unique situation. I just purchased the 103 a couple of weeks ago. Do I return it and buy the 103D when it comes out? Or do I get a stand alone Darbee?

That's why Id like to know if the Darbee has any advantages over the 103D or viseversa.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks Rob

It will ultimately come down to use. If you want multiple devices to take advantage of the Darbee then a Darblet as the last part of the chain would be the best solution. If you will be primarily using the player for your home entertainment, then the built in solution would be the best.
