Not exactly. "Lossless" is a digital compression term that refers to compressing the file without data loss. PCM has no compression at all. The end result is the same in both cases (a bit-for-bit copy of the original file), but only bitstream is technically "lossless" because it requires compression. PCM is uncompressed.

And thus no loss! biggrin.gif

Semantics of course -- I do know what you are saying -- but I think people need to be clear on the fact that high bit-rate, multi-channel LPCM is every bit as high quality as the fancy, name-brand "lossless" Bitstream formats (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA). The base audio is LPCM, everything gets compared to that. LPCM is used as the source to create the Bitstream, and LPCM is what results when the Bitstream gets decoded. The Bitstreams are packing formats used to conserve space on the disc and reduce the bit rate when reading the disc. By definition, LPCM is lossless, because it is bit for bit identical to the source content LPCM.

Thinking about the103D, especially the Darbee idea for our PJ setup:

So I am not an early adopter, and for upgrading I typically skip a few cycles. This is evident by the fact that so far I own only one Oppo product; my beloved and trusty 970 (as my SACD player).
My previous upgrade to BR was via a Sony CX960 changer (despite others long-term luck with this unit, ours is still performing well).
We love the convenience of the changer for managing our 300+ BR collection.

And now the Question:
Rather than assume; Is it possible to enjoy the 103D's Darbee enhancements by feeding my changers HDMI output to the 103D's HDMI input?
Anyone see any downside with that arrangement?

http://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-103/blu-ray-BDP-103D-Features.aspx

it would be a total waste! if your happy with your current player, just buy a standalone Darbee.

For some reason the link in the email link never would work right. If you just follow Bob's link above and click preorder, its good to go. They seem to be having issues, even it wasnt working awhile ago.

The BDP-103D is everything the BDP-103 is except that Marvell has been replaced by Darbee. All other characteristics are identical.

Turns out the player is officially the BDP-103 Darbee Edition, or BDP-103D for short.

They were smart doing that.

I cant wait to see how Darbee is worked into the menu structure, plan on running at HD and 35% for Directv and Blu-ray.

Kinda sorta. The division of video processing tasks, and the available video processing features have been changed.

There are three processors involved (on HDMI 1), the MediaTek System-on-Chip, dual core processor is the main processing element of the player. It is always engaged, regardless of what you are doing, for both HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 output. The Picture Adjustment control options provided by the Darbee and VRS processing only apply if selected by the user. At the factory default settings, the Darbee and VRS Picture Adjustment controls do nothing.

The Darbee and VRS controls can be used separately or together as you like, and only affect the HDMI 1 video output.

(The VRS chip also has additional functions in the video system over and above Picture Adjustment. For example the VRS also does the upscaling for 4K video output, and handles Color Space conversion for output.)

In essence, different pieces of what the Marvell QDEO chip did have now been taken on by ALL THREE parts of the new video chain.

Confused yet? Really it's probably best to think of it as a black box and just enjoy the results!

LOL, great description.

I dont like much mucking, my plan is to run it out as 1080p/60 to my display, with only some Darbee love working. Im not a big fan of the other "enhancements", and I may not even use the Darbee all the time (nice to have the option built in though). One of the things that is nice about Oppo is they aim for reference, and achieve it. The 103 in stock mode is reference, you send it 720p or 1080i into the HDMI in, it can output either at 1080p/60 and pass the tests a display cant if you send it 720p/1080i straight. You just know they have a goal, and they deliver. It helps take one concern out of your chain.

Amazon is also now taking orders for the OPPO BDP-103D:

http://www.amazon.com/OPPO-BDP-103-Universal-Blu-ray-Edition/dp/B00FMBV4HK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1380848550&sr=8-3&keywords=oppo+103d

The seller is OPPO Digital. At the moment there does not appear to be an order line for the BDP-103D plus Roku Streaming Stick combo. If you are interested in getting the Roku Streaming Stick bundle verison (i.e., without the separate Roku remote control) at the special pricing discount, you can order the combo from the OPPO Digital site, or purchase the Roku Streaming Stick separately, afterwards, on the OPPO Digital site by providing the serial # of your new 103D:
