QUICK FAQ
Can the BDP-103 be upgraded to the BDP-103D specifications? Unfortunately this is not possible. The Darbee solution is built into the mainboard, so it is not economically, environmentally, or time friendly to swap out the BDP-103 components for the BDP-103D components. You will need to purchase the BDP-103D at its full retail price.

Is there or will there be a BDP-105D? At this time the Darbee is exclusive to the BDP-103. Depending on the amount of interest and other feedback OPPO receives, they may released a BDP-105 with a Darbee solution. But there are no immediate or current plans for such a player.

Does the BDP-103D still have QDEO? No. The Marvell QDEO processor has been completely removed from the player and replaced by the Darbee and the VRS solutions. The VRS handles 4K scaling, Detail Enhancement and Edge Enhancement processing, while the Darbee handles just Darbee processing.

Since there is no longer a QDEO processor, will there be a loss of picture quality and accuracy? No. Like the current BDP-103, the BDP-103D uses the MediaTek SOC for all de-interlacing, scaling (to 1080p) and general video processing. So when the Darbee is set to OFF, the BDP-103D and the BDP-103 offer identical video performance.

Arguably, the HDMI 1 output of the BDP-103D will be better than the HDMI 1 output of the BDP-103 as some people observed a slightly less sharp image using HDMI 1. This was due to the QDEO enabling a small amount of Noise Reduction to this interface. Without the QDEO processor, there is no Noise Reduction defaulted to the HDMI 1 output, so some perceived increase in sharpness may be observed.

What Darbee settings do you recommend? I personally recommend using Hi Def and no more than 35%. Depending on your seating distance, your display technology, and the source, you may find that you can increase the Darbee percentage without adding artifacts. Conversely, you may find some sources require less processing.

The player has a Darbee button on it, so OPPO encourages you to switch between the Darbee modes and values on the fly, so play and tinker with it to your hearts contentment. The Darbee is for your personal preference, as it is "beyond reference".

Since I can, I am stealing the following section from Bill McClain:

How is the BDP-103D different from the BDP-103? The BDP-103D subtracts:
  • the Marvell Qdeo video processor
...and adds:
  • the Darbee Visual Presence video processor
  • the Silicon Image VRS ClearView video processor
...and replaces:
  • the remote with a new version with a Darbee button
All other aspects and functions of the two models are identical.

Where is the BDP-103D Settings Checklist?
Here: BDP-103D Settings Checklist

Is VRS processing the same on the BDP-103D as on the 983H and BDP-83?
The older players used Anchor Bay Technology chips with VRS. Since that time VRS was aquired by Silicon Image, which provides the solution used in the BDP-103D.

On the older players ABT peformed deinterlacing and scaling, but in the BDP-103D this is done by the Mediatek decoder.

The current Silicon Image VRS solution provides optional Detail & Edge Enhancement and Video Smoothing, and 4k upscaling.

What are some reviews of Darbee technology?

How many Darbee settings does the player remember? Darbee has four modes. The player remembers a separate Darbee Level for each:
  • Off (always makes Darbee Level = 0)
  • HiDef
  • Gaming
  • FullPop
In addition, the player has three user Modes available on the Picture Adjustment setup screen. These are user-defined presets and each remembers a Darbee Mode and Darbee Level for each mode, so the player will remember 3 x 3 = 9 possible levels (Off always being 0).

Is setting Darbee Level to "0" the same as Darbee Mode "Off"? Yes, they are identical.

You may experience stability issues if this step is not performed.
3. Even though this firmware provided some functionality similar to a pre-amplifier, we would recommend you to use it very carefully when connecting the Multi-channel or Stereo audio outputs directly to your amplifier and speakers.
4.This Public Beta firmware is designed to work with new versions of Apple iOS and Android media control applications. which add new features like SMB access, album art display, media category support, and the ability to share information to mainstream social network websites. The MediaControlHD V2.0 (for iPad and iPad mini) is already in the Apple Store, another version for the iPhone, as well as the corresponding Android app, will be available shortly.

Release Notes:

1. Added "Power On Volume" and "Maximum Volume" selections for the Multi-channel and Stereo (BDP-105 only) audio outputs. Both selections are available at the Setup Menu -> Audio Processing.
2. Added "Power On Input" selection which allows the customer to decide which input source to be used upon the player powers on. This selection is available at the Setup Menu -> Playback Setup.
3. Added "Settings Management" selection which allows the customer to backup or restore the player settings. This selection is available at the Setup Menu -> Device Setup. A USB flash drive is required for this purpose, and the backup file is encrypted to only allow access from the OPPO Technical Support.
4. Added "4Kx2K Output" selection to facilitate the 4K resolution upscaling and output to a 4K-compatible TV/projector. This selection is available at the Setup Menu -> Video Setup.
5. Added "Auto" mode when deciding the SACD output audio format. This mode is available at the Setup Menu -> Audio Format Setup -> SACD Output.
6. Added the support for automatic file and folder sorting when accessing SMB servers. The files and folders are now sorted in the alphabetic order.
7. Added the support for MKV file with PGS subtitle.
8. Added the Zooming capability to the video content sent through the HDMI IN ports.
9. Upgraded the "CinemaNow" and "Youtube Leanback" applications.
10. Improved the support of CUE playlist, now a single CUE file could point to multiple music files in the same folder.
11. Resolved a frame rate decoding error for 24Hz video files. Customers reported that after upgrading to BDP10X-58-0917 firmware, many MKV, M2TS and TS files which were 23.976Hz were decoded as 29.970Hz. This issue has resolved.
12. Resolved an incorrect audio Downmix issue on the Stereo audio outputs (BDP-105 only). Customers reported that after setting the "Stereo Signal" to "Front Left/Right", they could heard those surround channel audio from the dedicated Stereo audio outputs. This issue has been resolved
13. Resolved a visible streaking issue observed on the BDP-103D player. Customers reported that after turning on the Darbee processing, they could see streaks or straps in the background details, which became more obvious after increasing the Darbee level or switching to Full-Pop mode. This is caused by the mismatched rounding algorithms when passing video signal between the embedded Darbee video processor and the following OPPO video module. This issue has been resolved in the beta release.
14. Resolved a resume playback failure on Youtube. Customers reported that if they attempted to resume the play of a stream after pausing it for like 10 minutes, the playback picked up then stalled after a few seconds. This issue has been resolved.
15. Resolved a multi-channel DSD support issue in the Dual Display mode. Customers reported in this mode, if they connected the HDMI 1 Out to a TV and the HDMI 2 Out to a DSD-capable receiver, then the receiver could only recognize the Front Left and Front Right channels even the players were reading a multi-channel SACD. This issue has been resolved.
16. For the BDP-103D player, this firmware added three commands (QDB, SDB and DRB) to the RS-232 protocol for Darbee control, it also provided finer control over the Darbee level adjustment (in 1% step size).
17. Added an experimental feature of "Gapless Playback". Currently this feature only works for WAV and APE music files, and can be enabled in the music file navigation interface by pressing the OPTION button then selecting the "Gapless playback" choice. In the Gapless mode, you may use the buttons like PAUSE, PLAY, STOP, NEXT and PREV, but not REV and FWD. This feature is still under development and may be improved in the next firmware releases.
18. Resolved the compatibility issue with some DVD/BD blank discs. Customers reported that their self-burnt DVD or BD discs failed to load and play on the OPPO players, samples include Verbatim DVD+R DL 8.5G and BD-R DL 50GB blank discs. This firmware upgraded the software driver for disc loader and resolved this issue.

Release Notes:
1. Resolved an audio dropout issue occurring with "Monsters University (BD, 2013)", related to its Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and 7.1 audio tracks when the player's HDMI Audio Format was set to Bitstream. We worked with Dolby and our decoder chip maker to address this type of audio dropouts.
2. Resolved an issue with Gapless Playback with several customer-encoded WAV files. It was caused by an additional “List” information segment presented in the WAV file Header, and we have added support for this segment so that Gapless Playback now functions properly with these files.
3. Resolved an issue where a brief static noise could be heard when streaming music from a computer running Mac OS X to the BDP-105's USB DAC input. It could happen when the music stream was paused for a few seconds and then resumed, and it could be heard through the analog audio outputs, including the 7.1, Stereo, and Headphone outputs. We improved the audio muting logic and have eliminated this static noise.
4. Resolved an issue where a brief static noise could be heard when playing SACD discs in DSD mode on the BDP-105. This burst of noise was audible at the beginning of a track or when switching to the next track. It could be heard through the analog audio outputs, including the 7.1 and Stereo ports. We improved the audio muting logic and have eliminated this static noise.
5. Resolved a compatibility issue between BDP-103/105's HDMI 1 Output to the McIntosh MX150/151 AV Processors. Users reported no audio when using this combination, so we added special instructions for these A/V processors in the HDMI handshake process. We highly recommend that you contact McIntosh Technical Support to upgrade your MX150/151 firmware to the latest version.
6. Added Gapless Playback support for FLAC files.
7. Added 24 Hz support for customer-encoded video files in 480P24 and 720P24 formats. The original frame rate can be preserved when upscaling the content to 1080p, e.g., when Resolution is set to 1080P, the 720P23.976 content is output as 1080P23.976, and 720P24 is output as 1080P24. Previously, these formats were frame-rate converted to 60 Hz.
8. Added an "INSTANT REPLAY" function to video playback. If the customer presses the AB REPLAY button twice (two presses within 1 second), video playback will be automatically rewound 10 seconds.
9. Added support for playing CUE files and DSD64 files (.DFF and .DSF) over DLNA. The DLNA server must support these formats as well. A new version of oShare DLNA server that provides these functions is available now, and can be downloaded here from SourceForge.net.

4. Improved HDMI handshake performance for the HDMI input ports.
5. Resolved a compatibility issue with the available HDMI 2.0 input port on some Panasonic 4K TV, for example, the #4 HDMI port on TV model TC-L65WT600. This port contains additional Extended Display Identification Data (VSDB) blocks which caused our player to switch to DVI output mode and discard the audio packages, so there was no sound from the TV speakers. We added the support of the specific VSDB blocks and resolved the no sound issue.
6. Resolved a compatibility issue between BDP-103/105's HDMI 1 Output to the McIntosh MX150/151 AV Processors. 16. Resolved a HDMI handshake failure when the OPPO's HDMI Output is connected to an A/V receiver, while the same receiver's HDMI output is fed back to the OPPO's HDMI input. We added special handling for this kind of "loop" connection and resolved the handshake failure. However, We highly recommend that you should not use this "loop chain" connection since it might cause unexpected HDMI handshake/CEC result, even cause electrical damage.
17. Added the indications on the front panel and the TV screen for DSD file (.dsf, .dff) playback. If DSD stream is output through HDMI, the "SACD" icon on the front panel will be lit and the TV screen shows “Track Type” as "DSD". If PCM stream is output, then both "SACD" and "PCM" icons on the front panel will be lit, and the TV screen shows “Track Type” as "DSD to PCM". In this way, the customer could know if DSD-to-PCM conversion is happening in the player.
18. General disc compatibility improvements based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples.

Loader Version: 6U1000 or 7B1300 (BDP-103), 7B1300 (BDP-105, BDP-105D, BDP-103D)
Sub Version: MCU103-05-0916 (BDP-103), MCU105-04-1113 (BDP-105), MCU13D-01-0618 (BDP-103D), MCU15D-01-0930 (BDP-105D), DB10X 131030 (BDP-103D, 105D)

1.Fixed a bug in calculating acoustic propagation delay from the "Speaker Distance" parameters of the "Speaker Configuration" setting.
2. Upgraded the Netflix application to the latest version certified for OPPO BDP-10x models. This version features a brand new user interface. It also contains improved adaptive streaming technology which will improve streaming quality for high-speed internet connections. The new Netflix application should help customers who have reported poor streaming quality during peak hours. (On a related note, recently customers reported that Netflix streaming on OPPO players and other streaming devices could become unstable with error message like "not connect to internet". In our experience this issue is not caused by the player or its firmware update. It could be either a server-side problem or an Internet traffic problem. Should this happen to your device, please report the outage to Netflix. Netflix recommends a troubleshooting method of de-activating the device and re-activating it. De-activation can be done from the OPPO player’s setup menu (Setup -> Device Setup -> Netflix -> De-activate). Re-activation can be done by accessing the Netflix application from the Home Menu. In most cases, Netflix service can resume working after a few tries. The new Netflix application in this update contains additional network troubleshooting tool which can be used to test your connection to Netflix servers.)
3. Added the "Digital Concert Hall" application from Berliner Philharmoniker, which provides live and recorded classical music concerts in HD video from leading orchestras all over the world. Removed the "Film Fresh" application which is no longer functional due to the service provider stopping the service.
4. Improved Gapless Playback performance. Resolved issues such as the second track playing twice before moving to the third track, and resolved an issue where the Gracenote information could not be fetched when playing WAV files.
5. Resolved an issue where user settings (Size, Distance, Trim) inside the Speaker Configuration were incorrectly applied to the Headphone Out signal route. We revised the algorithm in this firmware and the Headphone Out signal is no longer affected by the Speaker Configuration changes.
6. Added a safety feature for BDP-103/103D: the "SACD Output" format is set to "PCM" by default. The reason is that the digital-to-analog converter (DAC) used on these two models cannot adjust the volume for DSD signals, so the analog volume level could automatically switch back to 100 when a DSD stream is detected. This safety feature will force the DSD stream to be decoded as a PCM stream before sending it to the DAC, which can help control the volume when loading SACD disc(s).
7. Added support for the "4Kx2K@50/60Hz" resolution to the BDP-103D/105D (HDMI 1 only, and in YCbCr 4:2:0 format only). The "4Kx2K Output" setting for the BDP-103D/105D is set to "Auto 4K 50/60Hz 4:2:0" by default.
8. Resolved an issue of “Reset Factory Defaults” not erasing the user account for the Youtube Leanback application.
9. Resolved an "A/V Sync" related issue where the A/V Sync data was not be automatically applied to the Coaxial and Optical digital audio outputs after the player was powered on.
10. Improved the file sorting algorithm for the media center (the Music, Photo and Movie options on the Home Menu). The player can automatically detect numbers located at the beginning or end of the filenames and sort the files by the numeric value. Albums with numbered tracks will play in the proper order.
11. Extended support for the PCM audio format for up to 24-bit, 352.8 kHz / 384 kHz via the USB DAC IN port (BDP-105D only).
12. Added the timing adjustment for external subtitles. This can be accessed from the "Option" menu -> "Subtitle Adj." -> "Sync." when playing movies from a USB flash drive or external hard drive.
13. A new version of the Windows driver for the USB Audio DAC is available for download here (v2.22). It is compatible with BDP-105, 105D and the upcoming headphone amplifier HA-1. Please uninstall the previous version(s) of the OPPO USB DAC driver from your computer before installing this new one.

Sub Version: MCU103-05-0916 (BDP-103), MCU105-04-1113 (BDP-105), MCU13D-01-0618 (BDP-103D), MCU15D-01-0930 (BDP-105D), DB10X 131030 (BDP-103D, 105D)

1. Fixed a bug in calculating acoustic propagation delay from the "Speaker Distance" parameters of the "Speaker Configuration" setting.
(On a related note, there is a small chance in Gapless Playback mode that the second and successive FLAC or APE files become slightly chopped off before moving to the next track. It might be related to the "Compresssion Level" setting during the file encoding. Should this happen, please contact OPPO service and provide some sample files.)
Please note that once "4Kx2K@50/60Hz" is activated, the user choices of "Color Space (HDMI 1)" and "Deep Color (HDMI 1)" in "Setup Menu -> Video Setup -> HDMI Options" is not used.
12. Resolved an audio sample rate issue between the BDP-105D's USB DAC IN and computers running Mac OS X.
13. Added the timing adjustment for external subtitles. This can be accessed from the "Option" menu -> "Subtitle Adj." -> "Sync." when playing movies from a USB flash drive or external hard drive.
15. General disc compatibility improvements based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples.

1. Resolved a Color Space issue for the HDMI 1 Out in BDP-103D/105D. Customers reported that if the Resolution was set to Source Direct and the Color Space was set to RGB Video Level, the actual color space sent out was RGB PC Level. This issue has been fixed in this firmware.

3. Resolved a playback issue with regular DVD discs found on 75-0515 firmware. Customers reported that if the "DVD 24p Conversion" was set to "On", pressing the REV (rewind) button within the DVD playback could cause the player to immediately freeze up. This issue has been resolved in this firmware.
4. Resolved a HDMI Audio issue with some 2L Blu-ray Music discs. Customers reported that if the AV Sync was set to 90ms and above, there might be no audio signal from both HDMI outputs.
5. Modified the RS-232 serial control protocol: we eliminated the "#APP FFR" due to the removal of Film Fresh service, added the "#APP BER" to enable access to the Berlin Philharmoniker concert service, also fixed an issue with "#SZM" that could not change the Aspect Ratio.
6. Added support for the “Pandora Premiers” station in Pandora.
7. Improved the Gapless Playback feature, and resolved an issue where the gapless mode could not be enabled for some 96 kHz / 24-bit WAV files.
8. Improved support for CUE files, specifically for CUE files that point to multiple WAV files.

Woo Hoo! New Official Thread! Empty isn't it? And roomy, too. And gosh, it still has that "new thread" smell!
--Bob
Bob,

Just upgraded from Oppo93 to Oppo 103D. Great that the 103 plays and looks good...except, while unboxing i notice some light smudge marks on the case. The normal boxed unit comes in a cloth bag and sports a protective film only on the glass display panel.
The seller is a reputable AV business, but I'm wondering if perhaps I got a floor display. I paid for new in box. Other than that, unit looks good, back panel connectors all shiny and bright. Sticker on back shows "Mfg. in Dec. 2014". Plays Atmos BluRays beautifully, I really haven't played with the Darbee feature yet. So...am I being too picky about the smudges? I noticed it leaves marks really easy. A forum search didn't show anything on this question.
Thanks for any advice, opinions.

Copying this information over from the prior, unofficial thread:

The Beta Testers just got the word that the non-disclosure restrictions are lifted on the OPPO BDP-103D, so we can talk about our experience with it as relates to the first, production firmware.

My take on Darbee is that it is processed video -- i.e., a step away from "accurate" video rendering. However, unlike the vast majority of "enhancement" video processing offered out there, THIS deviation from accurate is actually PLEASING.

I.e., if you want the most accurate rendering of the content as recorded, then leave Darbee processing OFF. But if you turn it ON and find you actually LIKE what it is doing to the video, there's no reason to be shocked by that or consider it some sort of guilty pleasure.

Next, the trick to using Darbee as a "set and forget" setting is to keep the processing percentage LOW.

Darbee offers 3 processing modes: Hi-Def, Full Pop, and Game. (I've not done any experimenting with Game).

Hi-Def is best used with HD content -- 720p, 1080i, or 1080p.

Full Pop is the better choice for SD content.

For Hi-Def (with HD content), I recommend you keep the processing percentage at 35% or less for a "set and forget" setting. You may find some content where you can go a bit higher, but you will also find some content where the Darbee processing is too distracting. Using 35% or less minimizes the chances of that.

For Full Pop (with SD content), I recommend you keep the processing percentage at 30% or less. Same reasoning.

Generally speaking, Darbee will work better with better quality content. For example noise in SD content may be emphasized too much even with Full Pop held at 30% or less.

One thing that may not be obvious when you start playing with the Darbee controls, is that the processing percentage is remembered SEPARATELY for each Darbee processing mode. So you can set 35% for HI-Def, 30% for Full Pop, and something else for Game, and those percentages will be remembered as you switch between the processing modes.

In addition, the 103D, like the 103, provides three whole SETS of Picture Adjustment settings, and the Darbee percentages you select are remembered separately in each set as well.

I've also experimented with combining higher Darbee percentages and the VRS Picture Adjustment controls to try to tone that down a bit. There are some fun possibilities to explore here, but in the end I feel it is really best to limit your Darbee use to the lower percentage settings I've stated here. Then also limit your use of the VRS adjustments to problematic content which needs some assistance.

This is just my personal take on all this of course. As more folks report here you will likely get additional suggestions, and you can play with all of those as time allows.

But remember, truly "accurate" rendering is achieved by turning off both Darbee and the VRS adjustments, and leaving the video level adjustments (e.g., Brightness) at their factory default (0) values.

ETA: In addition to the "Split Screen" and "Swipe Screen" Demo Modes for Darbee, I found another trick useful for getting a feel for what a given percentage level of Darbee processing is doing:

The Full Pop and HI-Def choices for Darbee are positioned either side of OFF in the menu line for that, and that line "wraps around" in choices. So you can easily toggle back and forth between either Full Pop and OFF or between OFF and HI-Def to see what's up. Try this on a Paused image and I think you'll be surprised just how much even LOW percentages of Darbee are doing. Whereas with moving imagery and the two Demo modes, you might not actually pick out the Darbee changes until you get to a higher percentage setting.

ETA 2: The VRS adjustments ALSO provide a Demo Mode -- in this case just Split Screen is available. If you turn on the Demo Modes for *BOTH* Darbee and VRS then both really are active. In both cases the portion of the screen to the left of the divider is processed and the portion to the right of the divider is unprocessed.

Here is the OPPO BDP-103D Settings Checklist .

It is identical to the BDP-103 version except for the Picture Adjustment section, which subtracts the QDEO and adds Darbee and VRS settings.

The links are still to the 103 manual and FAQ; I'll update them later. We'll just have a 103D section within the existing 103 FAQ.

Bill ,

Factory Setting is ON for Auto Updates. Question is, should I disconnect Ethernet Cat5 (Roku3 streams my online services) or just turn Off Update Notification?
Want to avoid an update that may remove features I wish to keep, (as in the case of losing ability to play iso files on my Oppo 93 following an earlier auto update.)

So can someone confirm the image quality out of HDMI 1 on the 103 vs the 103D, with regards to the built in and can't be turned off NR?

I have to say if they did indeed remove it on the 103D, Im a little pissed...

What they "removed" is the Qdeo processor, which has always had default NR that cannot be defeated. What's different on the 103D is that when all video settings are at default, HDMI-1 and HDMI-2 are identical in appearance.

Thanks.

Is the Marvell actually not onboard anymore, or just not doing anything with everything turned off?

It's gone.

Interesting. Well, I signed up for the notification and will sell the 103 on ebay. Ive been happy with the 103 but it seems so far this move on the 103D is in the right direction, as long as they can keep mediatek/VRS in line.

Ill be interested as people can comment more on the processing changes.

Interesting. Well, I signed up for the notification and will sell the 103 on ebay. Ive been happy with the 103 but it seems so far this move on the 103D is in the right direction, as long as they can keep mediatek/VRS in line.

Ill be interested as people can comment more on the processing changes.
I just received my 103d, switching over from bdp-93. Will the upconversion of DVD's be comparable to the 93, and should the Darbee be left on or off for this upconversion to take effect ?

Does the oppo have an option to shift the image position so that a 2.35:1 image could be aligned with the top or bottom of the 16x9 frame, or is that something only available in certain dedicated processors?

No, there is no shift control. A zoomed image is always centered.

I may be interested in this unit.......I previously indicated my complete disgust for the dvd section of the 103. I felt it looked terrible compared to my 83 ......... all the depth to the picture was gone......no depth and the dvd picture looked like a severely DNR'd blu ray. Some people on these forums seemed to want to attack me for this and state how the 103 dvd section was more or less state of the art and not noticeably different than the 83. I still beg to differ..........and will be holding on to my 83. I just received the drive repair kit in the mail from Oppo for my 83 and will have to do the install myself..........I hope it works.

It would be nice if an owner could give their opinion on the dvd section of the 103D vs the 83..........if it is at least as good.......I probably will get one. If 103D can also improve blu ray that would be nice too!

I should add that my displays used for these comments were a calibrated 60GT50, and now my new calibrated 65ST60.

With Darbee Mode OFF they look very similar to me.

But note that VRS processing in the -103D is different than the Anchor Bay solution used in the 983H and BDP-83. ABT had impressive results in deinterlacing and scaling DVDs, but in the -103D (and -103) that is done by the Mediatek decoder. I think the results are very good, but if you tried HDMI2 on the -103 and didn't like it then you may want to stick with what you have.

I've added a new section to the BDP-103 FAQ: BDP-103D Darbee Edition .

We'll expand it as questions and technical info emerge.

Your corrections and suggestions are always welcome. Topics already phrased as Q&A are particularly welcome.

Thank you for the info Bill.......I will follow all of this and check out reviews of the 103D.....as long as my 83 is working I likely don't need anything else for dvd.

^ Basically all the changes that are in the regular 103, as well. Substantially faster performance, updated decoders, and many more supported media file formats come to mind. If you use the Analog outputs the 103 is also a significant step up from the 83 (with the 105 being even better). And then of course the 103/103D/105 also include INPUTS -- ways to pass content from other source devices THROUGH the OPPO, used as sort of a mini-preamp-processor for audio and video.

Besides the Darbee and dual hdmi's, what other step ups over the 83 are there?

The BDP-83 was OPPO's first generation player and the -103 is the third. We don't have a document directly comparing their features, but if you can combine these two lists you can get an idea:

Cool how does it look better I assume

There are large matters of taste and personal preference involved.

To me: it is not an essential upgrade, but I have a tiny viewing area, sitting about 7ft from a 46" screen. The most enthusiastic Darbee proponents are front projector owners with large screens.

I tend to be skeptical of video enhancements, but at HiDef 35% it is unobjectionable. Unlike previous enhancement techniques, the Darbee does not destroy the fine detail in a image. The effect is hard to see on the S&M luma zone plate, for example. (In HiDef mode, at least; FullPop and Gaming may be different).

I have a ten foot wide screen 2:35 aspect ratio and sit 10 feet away do you think it is worth trying?

OPPO offers the usual 30 day return. I suspect you will not rest until you try it. Or: you could borrow someone's Darblet and see if you like the effect on your existing gear.
