Audio Question

I know the S6200 and S7200 will only decode 2CH for True HD. But how about Dolby Digital? Does these players fully decodes Dolby Digital or do they decode only 2CH as well? I have a an old Sony soundbar that that does not decode any of the HD Codecs so I have to relay on the player to internally decode these as LCPM. My S7200 fully decodes HD Master Audio as LCPM and sounds really nice but for True HD, I'm only getting DD. Does this means it's decoding DD as 2 CH only or Multi?

BTW, I would never buy a BDP from the company that steve1971 describes above.
So I take it you would never buy an Oppo Blu ray player? Why?

Part of a cult? I don't see buying an Oppo Blu ray player as being part of a cult I see it as owning one of the best Blu ray players ever made. Yes they are expensive but you get top notch quality and the best customer service support help around. I have wanted an Oppo for 2 plus years but have never had the means to buy one. Well come October that changes. My 6200 will go to my daughter.

Part of a cult?...
Quite.

Cultists are people who say they own one of those machines and proceed to rant endlessly, month after month, about how great they are without any basis in fact.

Frankly, my experience of them have left a lot to be desired. Sony are far better than they are.

I still prefer to use a real media player to play media files. And leave my Sony players to play BDs and use the streaming services.

Sony did not pay for a license to decode Dolby True HD to multi-channel audio. They only paid a license to decode to stereo.

What I've wanted to ask about: Do video files on a USB stick look better/same/worse via a Sony player (e.g., 5200,6200,7200) than playing them through a media box, such as the Patriot Box Office (HDTV via HDMI)? Audio is not an issue, because I use a high quality dac and powered speakers. Thanks,

Mine, as well.

I believe the reason I like it so much is the minimalist styling. It most certainly isn't the performance with certain java laden BD. The S790 is a much better performer with those titles.

What's great of the S7200 is it combines the styling of the S770 with the performance of the S790. That's something I've been wishing for, for quite awhile.

Almost sold the S770 a few months ago, but couldn't bring myself to do it.

is this also true for DTS-HD-Master Audio. as well?

I have two or three titles that have that option available. S770/S790 are able to do this quite well.

DTS HD Master audio is fine. The S600 and S7200 will fully decode it.The issue is with True HD. What i'm trying to find out is if the players will fully decode Dolby Digital as we already know that it will only decode 2 channels for True HD.

well I am.

in this case, ive bought every player in this line on launch day. never had any issues with any of the players. usually they all have had firmware updates waiting for them out of the box.

i picked up the 7200 on its first avail date here at a local sony store in LA. it too had an update waiting for it.

i stream to the player 100% of the time ive had it and it plays all of the junk, poorly recorded "Taken from YouTube" vids, and it plays then ins their native format.

i dont rip BDs to a server because i dont own many BDs (an handful) so if someone would dropbox me a file i am happy to play it to see how it looks on my end.

I just checked out one of my S6200s with 5.1 DD, 5.1 DD+, 5.1 Dolby TrueHD and 7.1 DTS-HD MA. I changed my output to PCM. WIth all the flavors of Dolby, my S6200 only output 2.0 PCM. WIth the DTS it output 7.1 pcm.

I have the WDTV Live and very happy with it but just wondering if I upgrade to the latest BR player, if I still really "need" the WDTV, its one less equipment I need to connect.

More than likely...yes, you will want the WDTV Live still. An Oppo might come close as far as media playback, but I am not sure.

For example, I don't know of any BR player that can play DVD ISOs off a hard drive, server, or flash drive....

I was able to donate over 200 DVDs when I purchased a couple WDTV Lives. I use my Sony 6200 for BR shiny discs and I watch my DVD collection using the WDTV Lives...so I was still able to "downsize".

Never compared with a Sony, but Oppo's are very good. I tried the 105 because of the dac, which shows a lot of attention, but ended up returning it. It couldn't switch between components (TV, media box, own DVD) without losing track of where each was. In that sense, 1990s design.

Anyone have an opinion about the question I posted: for videos on a USB stick, will one of the Sony's look the same/better/worse than using a separate media box, such as the Patriot Box Office?

I totally agree.
I have found that the Sony Blu Ray players that I have, S790 and S5100, freeze for no apparent reason when playing mkv files.
My Cambridge Audio 751BD does the same.

I have a dedicated LaCie LaCinema player that always plays every mkv file without a hitch. Aspect ratio is always correct as well, not like the Cambridge which expands many wide screen mkv files that have black bars top and bottom vertically to full screen.

A problem with both Sony and Cambridge Audio as well as many other manufactures is that they stop upgrading firmware once a new model is released

I now only use the Sonys for Internet streaming where the S5100 outperforms the S790 by some margin.
I have now ordered a S7200, hoping it will be an improvement on the S5100.

Iasab, yeah but mkv freezing aside - it was an older Sony player - was there any difference in picture quality?

Sorry I didn't do a side by side comparison. I used them both solely for internet streaming. The picture quality streaming Netflix SuperHD is impressive on both.
The S5100 gave slightly more detail as it went 5800kbps 1080pHD on Netflix whereas the S790 would only go 4300kbps 1080PSD. The S5100 is also better at buffering Netflix
I still have the S790 and have ordered a S7200.

The sound on the S790 was better.
One thing impressed me on both was the sound quality. They sensed both Dolby 5.1 and Dolby ProLogic on Netflix and Amazon Prime (US) correctly giving great surround sound. Other brands I have tested such as the Samsung F8500 Blu-Ray, Roku3 and Amazon FireTV did a poor job with sound compared to the Sonys.
