It played just fine. I have stated my player seems to be stuck in HDR mode. When ever I even turn it on and change source to blu Ray. It kicks in. So that is why I think you can have HDR at lower resolutions. No proof just a thought.

As I guessed it would -- and just because your backlight is 20 and contrast is 100, doesn't mean you're watching HDR. Currently, as far as I know, there is no player that has 1080p HDR. Maybe that will change in the near future, but not now.

I am sure that is true. It is really annoying though. I have tried unplugging it. That changed nothing. Thinking of factory resetting it next.

@Stanton

I too started getting drop outs and the HDCP 2.2 / HDR display error messages AFTER I started using 4:4:4

I never had those problems using Auto. I have also switched HDMI cables 3 times going through my Marantz 7010 AND straight to my TV...

My suggestion is we start telling people to try switching between Auto and 4:4:4 and see if that is the solution.

LOL. I do not know why it did that. I guess my iPhone doesn't like to rotate pictures if I take them vertically.

As far as Amazon goes, I get UHD on the 8500 now. If I watch Bosch, e.g., and pause the player, I see UHD on the top title bar and the lower time bar. And it sure looks like 4K to me. It actually may start out as 1080p, but soon kicks up to UHD.
You can force resolution on the player to output 1080p. It will output 1080p and still pass the HDR metadata to the TV. Your TV will display 1080p/HDR. I tested this on my K5800/940c combination.

It will always remember the last settings for bluray played. So, if you play a HDR disc where it sets backlight to 20 and contrast to 100, it will still be there with the next disc even though it's a regular BD. You then have to set it manually to what you want (usually 14-16/92-93)

HDR and Rec2020 Indicators

I hope this is not too redundant, but I have reviewed the manual without success. How does the 8500 indicate it is passing HDR and REC2020 out?

Message From Customer Service
Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about the issue you're experiencing.

Please note, at this time, Ultra HD videos playback is only supported on the following Amazon Video compatible devices:

Set-top Boxes & Streaming Media Players*

-- Amazon Fire TV (2nd Generation)
-- Roku 4

*These types of devices need to be connected to an Ultra HD TV that meets HDCP 2.2 content protection standards.

TVs
-- Samsung Ultra HD TVs (2014 models or later)
-- Sony Ultra HD TVs (2014 models or later)
-- LG Ultra HD TVs (2014 models or later)
-- Vizio Ultra HD TVs (2014 models or later)

We're working hard to expand our Amazon Video service to a broader selection of Ultra HD devices.

If you try to play Ultra HD content on an unsupported device, Amazon Video will play back in HD video quality.

To stream videos in Ultra High Definition (UHD), you need a high-speed Internet connection of at least 15 Mbps.

Fluctuations in your connection speed can cause buffering or changes in video quality while you're streaming a Ultra HD videos. Restarting your device, modem, and/or router often helps with issues like this. If your connection speed is a lot slower than usual (and you've already tried restarting your device, modem, and/or router), you might need to contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for additional help.

If you don't currently have enough bandwidth for Ultra HD streaming, the Amazon Video player automatically adjusts to deliver the best video quality your Internet connection can support.

After performing the above steps, please try to watch the video again.
Okay.i have neither the newest Roku or 2nd generation fire stick...I take this to mean I am SOL for the present...am I right?
I'm assuming you're selecting the UHD version, and not the regular HD version (both are listed in the app). What makes you think you aren't getting UHD, are you pausing the video or hitting <down> and it says something other than UltraHD?

Data point:
Mad Max Fury Road -- at the menu screen upon first loading, the player sent a message that this movie would play in 1080 because something wasn't HDCP 2.2 compliant. I ignored that and played the movie. Checking the specs during playback via my Marantz SR7010, I confirmed 2160p24 / BT.2020 / 10 bit (all specs matched, input and output).
The movie looks great in UHD, and the Dolby Atmos soundtrack (also available on the 1080 blu ray) sounds amazing, too.

K8500 Settings:
Aspect Ratio - 16:9 Original
BD Wise - Off
Resolution - Auto
Movie Frame (24fps) - Auto
DVD 24fps - Auto
HDMI Color Fomat - Auto
HDMI Deep Color - Off
Digital Audio Output - Bitstream (uncompressed)
Dynamic Range Control - Off

Netflix works well with UHD resolution (not HDR yet, I understand) via K8500 to Marantz SR7010 to Samsung JS9500.
Amazon Instant Video does not. It locks up. I power-cycled the K8500 to get it out of the locked-up condition.

I scroll all the way down(as was recommended by another poster) and insure I select a show with a UHD banner..after movie starts,I put same on pause, and always get either a HD or 1080 reading.....always..

Tried it one just one disc in AUTO, seems to work - and my AVR is reporting 4:4:4. The real test will come when I shut the 8500 down and then ON and see if I still get flickering.

As to 1080p/HDR, I find it hard to believe; an AVR reporting problem? Didn't think the 8500 is that sophisticated. Another poster reported this fucntion is just now being tested by other manufactures to be included in a year or two. It would have implications for cable companies' STBs.

Try turning OFF DVD 24fps conversion. See if that does anything. You'll probably get 30p, not 24p, but it may help the Amazon freeze up. It happens to me occasionally and I have to turn the 8500 off, then on.

I watch Mad Dogs from my Sony 940C TV Amazon app since it has HDR. I don't believe the Samsung 8500 4K player has HDR yet just UHD but heard it is coming. You are right about Mad Dogs looking exceptional.

I did as you suggested. Initial testing indicates lock-up problem in Amazon Instant Video may be avoided by turning off DVD 24fps.

Got it. And I'm assuming you have at least a solid 25Mbps download speed? Other than that, not sure why you would be having any problems. Even my 2014 model (HU8550) could get 4K from Amazon.

Has anyone gotten the DLNA streamer to work with anything but the Samsung DLNA Server? I am having no success with the Usual Universal Media Server. I ordered a Synology NAS, but I'm worried that it won't see that either. I want to be able to finally get rid of this PS3!

Ok, I just took your post as having done the check yourself at face value. I subscribed from to this thread but there are too many posts that I'm not interested in on a daily basis, so I must have missed that post all that ways back. Seems we still tend to learn more here on AVS than over at AV, even with non-US stuff like this it seems . I'll edit out my post in accordance - I hate non-requested info being repeated, cheers!

Cool. I opened mine to make sure it was before booking it up to be safe and I suggest the same to anyone else thinking of doing it just in case Samsung use different components for different batches. (Not sure if they would but best to be safe)

Mine is coming at the end of the week. I organised a transformer too. So it's definitely safe to hook it up to 240v??

It does seem that way and mine is working perfectly without a transformer, but I can't take responsibility if yours is different to mine. I strongly suggest you open your one up and look at the bottom of the power board to ensure it also shows the 110-240v on the bottom. It's very easy.

Hi,

I'm new to this forum, but I've come here as I really need some help.

I just upgraded my 1080p Epson projector to the SONY VPL VW665ES 4K.

I also bought the Samsung UBD-K8500 4K Bluray Player along with about 10 or so Ultra-HD 4K Blurays.

I'm still using my old ONKYO TX-NR636 7.2 Surround Receiver. It has 1 input I can see that accepts 2.22 HDMI so I'm using that one for the Samsung's input.

And I've rewired everything to use HDMI 2.0 leads.

BUT - - - I cannot get any of the 4K Blurays to work. Many will load up with a warning screen telling me that my display doesn't support 2.22 so it reverts to regular HD. The HDR 4K Blurays will normally not load up at all and I just get a black screen. Sometimes the screen just goes black and it flashes X>HDMI2 in the top left corner. Over and over.

I tried patching the Samsung Player into the Projector directly, to see if it's the Receiver that is the problem, but I can never get an image that way.

I feel I must be being stupid. But the set-up worked perfectly before and I've just swapped things over to upgrade to 4K. I've researched like crazy online and everything tells me it should all be working.

Please, if anyone can help me - I'd be forever indebted. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've spent so much money and after 3 nights fighting with it al - am just exhausted.

Thank you!

Al White.
