ULTRA HD RESOLUTION AND HIGH DYNAMIC RANGE
  • 4K Ultra HD Video
  • The UDP-203 supports the playback of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs. Packing a resolution of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels, UHD Blu-ray delivers four times the pixels of Full HD Blu-ray. The UDP-203 is also capable of playing 4K media files and user generated content. Support for decoding the HEVC, H.264, VP9 4K, and Hi10P video codecs provides increased compatibility with user generated media.
  • High Dynamic Range
The UDP-203 supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Wide Color Gamut. The enhanced resolution, refined contrast, greater brightness, and expanded color produce stunning video with unparalleled clarity and detail. In addition to supporting the HDR10 format on discs and video files, it is also capable of providing an accurate conversion of HDR to SDR for older displays, as well as conversion between various color spaces such as BT.2020, BT.709, and BT.601.
  • Dolby Vision Upgradeable
Leveraging hardware designed to support Dolby Vision, customers can expect a firmware update in early 2017 that brings Dolby Vision support to the player. Dolby Vision transforms the TV viewing experience by delivering striking highlights, brilliant colors, and deep darks never before seen on standard television screens, and OPPO is committed to bringing this exciting technology to the UDP-203.
EXPERTISE AND QUALITY
  • Reference Quality Video
The UDP-203 combines the latest technology with OPPO's many years of experience in delivering high quality video and audio. A customized quad-core video decoder/processor integrates OPPO's advanced video decoding, processing and optimization expertise.
  • High Precision Disc Loader
A high-precision, well-balanced laser optical disc loader ensures smooth and reliable playback of all types of disc media. An optimized laser mechanism to ensure super fast disc loading, strong error detection and correction.
  • Exceptional Build Quality
The UDP-203 features a brushed aluminum front panel, a rigid steel chassis and gold plated connectors. The solid build quality not only presents a sleek aesthetic, but also ensures dependable operation and reliable connection.
UNIVERSAL DISC AND FILE PLAYBACK
  • Multiple Disc Formats
The design of the UDP-203 focuses on quality playback and universal compatibility with multiple disc and file formats. In addition to the latest UHD Blu-ray, the UDP-203 supports regular Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD, DVD-Audio, SACD, and audio CD.
  • Media File Playback
The UDP-203 is equipped with two USB 3.0 ports on the back and another USB port on the front. Users can play video, music and photos from USB hard drives or thumb drives.
  • Home Network Access
Built-in 802.11ac Wi-Fi or Gigabit Ethernet connects the UDP-203 to users’ home networks, so users can easily play media files stored on computers and home servers.
HIGH RESOLUTION AUDIO
  • Lossless Audio Decoding
The UDP-203’s video performance and universal compatibility is further complemented by its support of lossless high resolution audio. The player decodes audio file formats such as AIFF, WAV, ALAC, APE and FLAC. It also directly plays Direct-Stream Digital audio files in stereo DSD64/128 or multi-channel DSD64.
  • Advanced Audio Formats
With internal decoding of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, and bitstream output for object-based immersive audio formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, the UDP-203 delivers great sound for both movie soundtracks and music.
  • High Performance DAC
The UDP-203 offers 7.1-channel audio outputs for connecting to a 7.1-channel or 5.1-channel surround sound system. The 7.1-ch outputs feature "Velvet Sound" 32-bit premium digital-to-analog converters from AKM of Japan, delivering an incredible sound stage and an immersive surround experience.
VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY
  • Dual HDMI Outputs
The player features two HDMI outputs – an HDMI 2.0 port for connecting to the latest UHD TVs, projectors and A/V receivers, and an HDMI 1.4 audio port for connecting to older A/V receivers. Customers with newer 4K- and HDR-capable A/V receivers can use a full HDMI 2.0 signal path, while customers with older A/V receivers can have a split A/V setup.
  • HDMI 2.0 Input
An HDMI 2.0 input port that supports UHD resolution is available for users to connect an external streaming device. This approach affords users the flexibility to choose from a wide range of streaming devices and easily upgrade as streaming technologies evolve, while still taking advantage of the UDP-203's audio and video processing capabilities.
  • Easy Integration
Integration-friendly features such as RS-232 control, back panel IR sensor and third-party IP control make the UDP-203 a great choice for any home theater system. Coaxial and optical digital audio outputs provides backward compatibility with legacy audio components.

1. Turn on your OPPO player and other associated equipment (display, AV receiver, etc.). Make sure that the player is connected to the internet and the player is not playing any content.
2. The player will automatically start searching for the new firmware from an OPPO firmware server and prompt you to start the firmware upgrade. (If you are not automatically prompted to upgrade, go to the Setup Menu and select Firmware Upgrade / Via Network in the Device Setup menu.)
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to begin the firmware upgrade. The video output will be temporarily disabled once the upgrade is in progress. During this time, the front panel display of the player will show “UPGRADING”.
4. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TURN OFF THE PLAYER, UNPLUG THE POWER, OR PRESS ANY BUTTONS OTHER THAN NECESSARY TO RESPOND TO THE ON-SCREEN PROMPTS DURING THE REMAINING UPGRADE PROCESS.
5. After the upgrade is complete, the unit will turn itself off and then back on again.
6. Once you see the player’s Home Menu on your display, go to the Setup Menu and select Firmware Upgrade / Via Network in the Device Setup menu again and the player should report it already has the latest firmware. This will ensure that the player downloads and installs all parts of the firmware upgrade.
7. Check the new firmware version by going to the Setup Menu, and then select Device Setup / Firmware Information. If you notice that the firmware versions displayed do not match the versions listed in this release note, please try another method or contact us.
8. We recommend resetting the player to factory defaults after upgrading the firmware. You can do so by going to the Setup Menu / Device Setup / Reset Factory Defaults. Re-enter your customized settings as necessary after resetting.
9. Congratulations! The firmware upgrade is complete.

Someone was asking about Atmos across the network.

The pics show m2ts from within the backup BDMV on the networked correctly displayed, with full Atmos.

You have to know the file to select, but it worked fine.

Your image is the infamous "Universal Screen Saver". Hard to say why the disc is throwing that up, but the way out of it is to press the Yellow button on your remote. At least that's the normal routine.
Well, the yellow button didn't work. Randomly pushing buttons that didn't appear to do much, all of sudden I found myself at the Top Menu. However that wasn't dispalyed properly either - the background as there but the various options where not visable.

Pushing the down arrow button appeared to select Play and the movie started. I think I'll take the disc back to the retailer as a "dud" and go from there.

Oppo 203

OPPO is using a new custom made drive. The only one I'm aware of that does 4k,BD,DVD,CD,SACD, and DVD-A all in one drive. Lots of read algorithms to get sorted there. Give them a chance to get it right.
I do think they had a definite plan to get this out before the holidays and honestly quite a bit of pressure from feedback in the anticipation thread. I think if most here were given a choice of waiting 3 more months for the release or getting the player now with a few issues to be sorted that most would want the player now.
That sums up very nicely, IMO.

* The lat words of your quote: "... most would want the player now." → I would say a bunch perhaps, but certainly not most. Many of us here are smart and patient when it comes to UHD and all that jazz. Of course, in my opinion. Even many 203's owners are willing to wait for future fixes from firmware updates. And if some issues are hardware related...well there is always a future Oppo 203MKII...a probable possibility in the eventuality...

Thx Clark Burk for a smart post.

I haven't had too many problems with my 203 but while watching Lucy UHD disc I went into the menu setup and it was slow and very laggy. I then later paused the movie and switch the input to watch tv and came back to Universal screen saver but couldn't resume the movie without having to stop and restart the movie.

any chance box is changed by shipper due to damage or Oppo shipped it this way, if player is not damaged you re fine but very un Oppo like. A company who put so much emphasis on packaging deliver the box like this kind of out of norm.
If you go back to his original post it has been updated: It was reboxed at one of their FedEx locations.

I have requested Logitech upload all available commands from
http://download.oppodigital.com/UDP203/UDP-203_Remote_Code_v1.2.xls
to their database. E.g., missing discrete on/off for the device which came up when I searched on Oppo UDP-203.

If anyone knows of a better device, with it fully programmed, or a better way of getting Logitech Remotes updated, let me know. Thanks.

No, it shouldn't - via the HDMI input. Only if you play an MKV directly.
I like this answer, thanks.

I'm not sure if HDMI input is affected by Cinavia presently. Seems like it would be pointless as any component with Cinavia active would trigger the protection on its HDMI output.
Like this answer too, with the exception of the word "presently" ..tad bit worrisome if you ask me. I will not be updating the firmware until someone else does, and reports back playability of MKVs out of HTPC and into the OPPOs HDMI for upscaling. Even though I'm very excited about Dolby Vision and it's dynamic configuration vs the HDR10s static, I would not do the update if it included any restriction on the player's HDMI input.

At present, OPPO is not required to do Cinavia detection for content coming in on the HDMI Input. That could change if the Studios get their dander up. But since TVs and AVRs are not required to do Cinavia detection on THEIR HDMI inputs, that's not all that likely.

Cinavia detection at this point happens for shiny disc playback and media files playback (USB or network streaming). If Cinavia is detected and you are not actually playing the matching, commercially released, shiny disc, then playback will be blocked.

There's that word again, I really hope they do not bow down to any of Hollywood's possible future paranoia.

Look, I send hundreds of dollars of hard-earned money to them every year to build my BR collection, I should be able to make an MKV of the main feature and have it at-the-ready in my KODI library.

Some folks are 'channel changers' ...well I happen to be a 'movie changer' and should be able to do this without having to get up and swap out the darn disc, at least on standard 1080p. Sheez...

I guess it's my fault that I didn't ask about the possibility of this happening before ordering the thing, my bad I suppose...

*edit* Another question: is there a way to disable an internet connection to the 203?

I've done a hdr calibration using mascior's patterns which cost $25 and you can find in the calibration section. On the 940c, color actually needs to be brought down to prevent clipping. So at 60 and 85, you are missing details especially in the reds and making the picture worse. Try turning color down to 47 and putting live color on which increases highlight details to 2000 nits. You can verify using the color clipping patterns without a meter but you'll need one to do grayscale and pq curve. I did the calibration on the samsung player so I need to verify on the oppo which I received yesterday. It's best to move this discussion to the 940 owners thread or pm me.
I have a Sony 940C and calibrated to myself i couldn't be happier and with that TV let me tell you my experiences with Oppo 203 (had it around 7 days returned) Panasonic UB900 and Samsung K8500.
Panasonic by far the best PQ i have seen between these 3 players, same TV, same cables and setup etc. I'm not kidding. I had Panny originally and sold it months back thinking that Oppo 203 all the hypes would be better, was i wrong! Anyway i'm not talking about some issues Oppo is having, i'm not even count those in and i'm sure they will fix it with firmware update soon.
I'm talking about pure PQ comparison even sound seems much crisp, punchy or more detail, maybe that is not possible when you bitstream and use AVR to handle things but at least it feels like it. Back to back between these players nothing comes close to Panny's PQ.
I'm very happy that i'm back to Panasonic.
Cheers :)

100% with you on this! I own two other players, and while they've had a few hiccups, they pale in comparison to the 203's issues that many are going through here. I understand that with new tech comes new problems, but let's be real here this "new tech" came out many months ago with the Samsung k8500 and I've had that player since day one, and only ran into one issue where the player locked up, ONCE! No audio issues, nothing! Was it perfect? No, but it played movies like it was sold to do without interruption. With the 203, people are acting like all of these problems should be expected when they just shouldn't folks. Not at any price point, let alone $550.00+.

Telling folks to wash brand new discs, or any of the discs for that matter when they play just fine in any other player is just well an insult to people's intelligence. I'm sure when we have issues with a disc most of us, (if not all immediately check and wipe the disc) for one. As for swapping cables... I'm sure most folks here have already decent high speed cables in place, especially if they're replacing an existing UHD player. Again, some here have mentioned these work arounds politely, and that's fine, but there are some of you, that have pushed these work arounds in a way that it's obvious you believe it's not Oppo's fault with most of these issues, and it's again... insulting.

I also share the OP's sentiment that I'm sure these problems will get fixed... (eventually), but for anyone to say that the 203 wasn't rushed, or is fine in its current state, well I just have no words for these people. I for one will wait for the fixes, but I must say it's really ridiculous the way some of you have mocked, or talked down to folks like me who have placed blame where it's clearly justified.

For those of you who have said "I've watched X amount of movies and no issues here", I'm happy for you. Honestly though, you may not be out of the woods. I've seen some post they've seen no issues, and a few pages later some of these same folks say "well I experienced this issue tonight while playing ....." Point is, most of these issues are so random, and you may end up coming across one or more eventually. If you don't consider yourselves lucky! As most of these players seem to have issues. As I'm reading these same complaints in other forums, and other social media sites. Bottom line.... the 203 was rushed, and is plagued with issues that need immediate addressing. It should of never been released at this point.

Amen mate..
I have owned all the other Oppo players before, and this is the only one with such playback issues.
Granted it's a new format, but suppressing feedback that it could be something wrong with the player instead of just blaming the discs is not the right way..
Especially since the same disc play well on my ancient Oppo 83Nuforce!

Hi guys and gals, just reviewing all the forum chat here and would like to know if anyone but me is using the combo of... LG B6 oled display and the beautiful oppo 203. If so, what settings are you using? Ive been playing around with Independence Day Resurgence. Thanks for your guidance.

After reading Oppo threads for years(never owning one)I ordered one even with all the hand ringing in this thread....I've seen this stuff before, my Tosh HD-A1 Hd-Dvd player was a tank, but slow and buggy, and needed to be fixed twice. I'm 100% confident Oppo will address the issues...and I do still have my Sammy jic I need it.
I don't know about any "hand ringing" . . .

. . . maybe you should answer it.

I'm standing by my very early pre-order with reseller AV Science and am expecting to get it NLT the second week in January. Although cognizant of the early-adopter hiccups, I am excited to get my very first Oppo up and running. I'm not dismissing those who find these initial issues frustrating, but I don't recall any computerized piece of equipment I have ever owned --let alone one utilizing new (UHD BR) technology together with very quirky communication protocols (HDCP)--that operated flawlessly out of the gate.

Any trepidation I may have felt has been more than assuaged by the stellar feedback provided by the knowledgeable and indefatigable folks here (you know who you are). We (and Oppo) are very fortunate to have such a valuable resource at our disposal.

For now, my sole motivation for acquiring the UDP-203 is to get the full immersive audio on those BR releases that have restricted the Atmos track to UHD BR. The Oppo will be the first UHD and/or HDCP 2.2 item in my system and will be followed eventually by a Sony XBR-65Z9D and the upcoming new Denon flagship AVR for 2017/18. Then the real fun begins.

Until 4K disc prices come way down or you can rent 4K discs at Redbox, the up-scaling of cable TV is the only way I can justify buying this to replace my BDP-103.
As I previously pointed out in the UDP-203 Anticipation thread, you can rent UHD BR discs through the mail from 3D-BlurayRental.com for the equivalent of about $3.50 a pop. And that's postage-free both ways, delivered to your mailbox.

Sittler27,
Probably the wrong thread to explore that. You can of course return it to OPPO Digital for refund, although you would still be out the shipping costs, which must have been substantial if you are out of pocket $900.
--Bob
Shipping was $105 (US) plus another $100 customs clearance fees. The $900 was Cdn after exchange rate.

I think the player is great for disks, but I guess I was expecting it to also play my mkv collection like my old 103 did (used to have one about a year ago).

Not a thing OPPO can do about it. It's follow the rules or stop making players.

*edit* Another question: is there a way to disable an internet connection to the 203?
Setup -> Network Setup -> Internet Connection = Off
