This was interesting, but didn't make me feel like a 203->205 upgrade would be worth it for HDMI alone:

How is the 205's analog outputs improved over the 203, beyond the ability to use the stereo analog DAC as left/right channels of 5.1 system?

That's a reasonable assessment. Putting up the money for a 205 pretty much necessitates that you've got more than one feature of the 205 which you find attractive. Probably more than two.

I expect their will be bench test results out fairly quickly from the better reviewers which may give more insight into the real world importance of this new Anti-Jitter approach.

Of course people have been complaining about Jitter on HDMI almost from the day dot, so now we'll have a chance to see if tackling that problem truly results in improvements people can hear (assuming good equipment in the rest of the audio chain of course).

Note that folks who want to use only single HDMI cabling from the 205 will *NOT* get this Anti-Jitter advantage. It is only available on the Audio HDMI output, and that output does not carry video program content. You HAVE TO use dual HDMI cabling to take advantage of the Anti-Jitter Circuit. The reasons why are explained in that OPPO white paper: Squashing Jitter and full featured video are not compatible on the same HDMI cable, for the reasons it details.

The entire Analog audio output stage of the 205 is different from the 203. Better power, better DACs, better components. The multi-channel Analog outs of the 205 should sound better than those on the 203 -- which is already no slouch for Analog audio output quality. The Dedicated Stereo Analog outs and the Headphones output just add to that. (The 205 also adds additional Digital audio INPUTS not found on the 203, but that's a different topic.)

Thanks. I also reused my Middle Atlantic rack plate from the 103 for the 203, so would need a new one.
I know LH Labs was splitting USB signals in for the same idea.
I look forward to reading reviews.

I know many are still interested in the 103 (and older) for legacy features, so I could always swap one of those for a 205 in future.

Glad to hear that, Bob. I know this is true of the 105/103, but wanted to know with regard to 205 vs 203.

I'm very interested in the performance of the 205 Headphone output. I was not inspired by Sennhieser HD 598 cans I purchased just for the 105 several years ago and never used it. Can't believe I will get to try it again, on a new Oppo.

I've been running my 205 on repeat all day today and decided to plug in my cans. I had the SACD of Holst's Planets on and it sounded great. Easily drove my HD600s to ample volume and it was very clean sounding.

What about off-label use as a preamp? In that case would the 205 be tangibly superior to the 203, specifically with regard to the volume control?

I'm not sure about that yet. I don't have enough info. I'm also not sure whether the 205 will be more forgiving in terms of things like impedance requirement if you connect it directly to a power amp.

This is all stuff we'll have to learn as brave souls give it a try.

Just to be clear here. The Analog outs of the 205 are designed to be connected to the inputs of a pre-amp. OPPO is not suggesting folks should use it directly connected to a power amp. But just as with the 105 and 105D I suspect some will.

Thanks Bob. I've been using the 93 as a preamp for years. I'm beginning to appreciate how fortunate I was that it worked.

^ Simply make sure your AVR is set to Analog "pass through", so it doesn't re-digitize.

Interesting. What features do "pass through" allow in the AVR? I understand I'm still using the DAC in the player.

See the two Reference links I posted at the top of this thread to posts I made in the 205 Anticipation thread regarding Analog vs Digital audio output and how to set up your AVR for Analog input.

I'll probably not upgrade from 105D until it can play ISO files.
And I rarely use the headphone jack on the 105D, mainly use it as DAC/pre-amp for my Pathos Aurium, which sounds Amazing.

Source: Thinkpad running iTunes/JRMC upsampling to 24/192
DAC/SACD: Oppo 105D
Amps: Pathos Aurium, Chord Mojo, LG V20 (quad-dac)
AVR: Yamaha Aventage RX-A3010
Headphones: AKG K812, AKG K3003

Sorry, Bob. Should have made it clear I'm not using an AVR with my 105. Don't need one as the Oppo is my only source and works fine with my power amps.

Then what was your comment about re-digitizing referring to? MY point was that going through a pre-amp, preamp-processor, or AVR does not mean you have to re-digitize the Analog output of the OPPO so long as you are careful in the setup.

You said the Analog outs are designed to be connected to a pre-amp. If I used that to make my decision, I would not buy the 205; the 203 would do fine.

Edit: that's just me. I'm sure others are ok using an AVR and re-digitizing, or not...

They appear to allow for stand-alone operation as a pre-amp.

That's a good find. But also there are worthy preamps, integrated stereo amps, and even A/V pre/pros with analog pathways that sound good enough to justify a high end source.

I actually listen to SACDs in 5.1 through my speakers... Yes (on watching UHD), in fact that's the only reason I upgraded to the 205 as I was happy with my 105D. I've got the 205 snugged up in my rack but I can take a few of the front. One thing I'm very happy about is the buttons for play/stop/ff/rwd, etc. They're actually buttons again! I have very poor vision due to an eye disease, so it's nice to have buttons you can 'feel' again
