Which might be the BEST reason for just saying NO to HD Optical.........

It is "WOW" TV!

Speaking of Universal, weren't they suppose to fall in line?

You would think if they were going to, they would do it at CES.

There was a story about how Universal was holding out for some concessions on DTS or something like that? This would be to placate Spielburg? Or was that some other studio?
Yeah, there's just about zero chance of Sony (Columbia Tristar, MGM) releasing movies in the HD-DVD format.

I've read statements indicating that both Fox and Disney are gearing up for a Blu-ray only releaseschedule, but I guess that if HD-DVD is launched, survives and grows into some sort of succes with a future along with Blu-ray, they might re-consider to reach the HD-DVD customers too. But the catch is that HD-DVD will have to make it on it's own before they will consider this and that's a catch 22 - how will HD-DVD make it on it's own without studiosupport from Columbia, MGM, Fox and Disney?

Universal is HD-DVD and it could be the DTS arguments that holds them back, but I seem to remember that they asked for compensation to back Blu-ray, but the Blu-ray camp denied their request and soon after they supported HD-DVD. Maybe they struck a deal with Toshiba and are not at liberty to back Blu-ray in public and therefore they choose to stay silent until further notice.... Dreamworks will probably follow Universals lead.

You are correct - I haven't read that yet.

Then they will probably support both formats to start with.

I still bet the PS3 won't come with Blu-Ray movie playback as part of the standard package. You'll have to pay $100+ if you want that feature.

XBOX Live: Wagmman
PSN: Wagg
BFBC2: Wagman
Steam: Wag

My Second Life character looks and acts exactly like me except he can fly.

I'm willing to take a bet on that (and I'm not a betting man). The basic reason why many studios (like warner) decided to support PS3 would disappear.

It is ofcourse possible that ps3 will have a premium version (with HDD etc) which will play movies, but the basic version won't. Even that I doubt would happen ...

I thought Samsung had committed to a universal player?
David F, no, what they actually said is that if there is demand for a universal player they are not opposed at building one. They have neither promised one nor said they have started working on one.

I thought Disney was releasing on both formats, but now I'm not sure -- hard to sort through the fact from fiction with so much information being passed.
so far the way I see it

Fox : said BR exclusively
Sony : said BR but did not exclude HD-DVD (but I think it is likely)
MGM : said BR but did not exclude HD-DVD (but I think it is likely) - I put MGM separately because Sony does not fully own them and they did make their own announcement
Disney : said BR but did not exclude HD-DVD
LG : said BR but did not exclude HD-DVD
TW: said both
Paramount: said both
Universal said HD-DVD but did not exclude BR

Amir

The mass market you imply. Which is true to some extent.

Thanksgiving can be a sham, but it's a sham with yams. It's a yam sham.
