The official specs have been released at http://playstation.com/products.html (to scroll you have to drag the arrows, not click them). Sorry to disappoint everyone who wants to continue the "PS3 with 2 SKUs=No Blu-Ray" chant, but it's definitely included. Since the hard drive is detachable and may be optional (a la the XBox 360), that may be where there was confusion, if the rumormonger wasn't lying outright. Some information hasn't changed much (1080p-capable HDMIx2, SACD and DualDisc playback), there's no definitive word on audio codecs (it says "Dolby 5.1ch, DTS, LPCM, etc. (Cell-base processing)"), it can read PS3 BD-ROM as well as regular BD-ROM and BD-R/E, and it includes 800.11g wireless (for using the PSP as a controller, sweet!).

So this thing is going to be more like 600 USD (or more). Otherwise Sony is going to take a bloodpath on their own books or the big investors will pound them to death.

OTOH good for me that I already have a PSP :D That is one 'hootin-tootin next-gen machine!

All indications point to ~$500, although if they follow the 360's lead, there might be a more expensive package with more controllers, HDD, and otherwise optional accessories.

Agreed.

Nice to have SOME kind of concrete information, at last. :)

That page is kind of old and has been around for quite some time.

The earliest google cache I can get is Feb 7th. And the copyright is 2005.

Grain of salt.

*Storage Media (HDD, "Memory Stick", SD memory card, and CompactFlash) are sold separately. The key word is HDD sold separately, i.e. two SKU?

This is from July 25, 2005.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/636/636848p1.html

And it pretty much matches what's on the SONY page.
So this isn't really new or anything. Official?, well.....

That's pretty much the spec that's been expected since E3 last year. If they come thru with that it'll be a fine piece of kit for sure depending on price, but it'd be nice to see something updated soon. That case was said to be "concept" casing that could change along with the controller for instance.

There doesn't seem to be a link to this page from the North American home page.

http://www.us.playstation.com/

But there is a link to a similar page from the Japanese home page.

I think the controller is almost bound to be altered back to an echo of the PS2 design. I believe I've read a quote from Ken talking about the controller on display being largely inspirational, and an indication of their forward looking philosophy, or some such junk. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

Yeah, but I am not seeing anything new compared to the IGN July 25th, 2005 article.

Official or not, I was hoping we'd see something a bit more solid in this thread.

It's about as good as any rumour thread at this time, just cause it's so old.

Ethernet: 10/100/1000-Base-T x 3 (one input, two output)

So, a three port gigabit Ethernet hub? That's a nice touch. Patch cables to two other Ethernet devices.

Two SKUs is usually refering to multiple package configurations.

There will be more than two actual SKUs for the PS/3 family, with extra controllers, the HDD, etc.

The HDD probably won't be part of every PS/3 configuration, and it will definitely be available outside any premium SKU.

I am now reading that this page was there as of last E3.

It's funny how so many forums are picking this up and posting it as if this was new.
This isn't the only place.

Something tells me that the official announcement of PS3 specs will be accompanied by the arrival of at least one travelling star, and possibly two virgin births. Marauding elephants can't be ruled out either.

In other words: this is far too low-key to be the final spec, in my opinion.

There doesn't seem to be any announcement that this is the final specs. Or that we didn't know the final specs a year ago. JBlacklow, where did you hear that they had been released or did you (or someone else) just find the page and think "Oh! The official specs have been released!"

More digging seems to reveal that this announcement came during E3 2005

Where are you reading this, the comments section of XBox.com? The specs come from the official site, it's being reported on several large tech and gaming sites with no retractions or denials from Sony.

Anyway, even if the page has been up for a while, it still doesn't change the fact that Blu-Ray is still in the specs, or that it has 1080p HDMI, or that it has wireless and HDD capabilities.

Yeah, we know jack, but it's not new news. It's from last years E3.

You made it sound like this was all brand new details, when actually it's pretty much what has been known for quite some time now.

And without a doubt, it might not even look like the picture on the 'official' site.

You are claiming these were just released this morning. It's just not true.

Also, maybe you would know, is 1080P native or upconverted? (which is why these specs are like the watered down version and we still have to wait till we get closer to the release date)

Both? Are you asking about games or movies? The BD-ROM spec lists 1080p24 as one of the supported output resolutions for video, but that has little to do with games. Since the graphics will be rendered in an extension of OpenGL, output could be variable from 480i to 1080p24 based on console settings and display capabilities. Rendered game graphics content is not static or dependent upon one native resolution that is either up or downconverted like traditional video.

More for movies. But it was a hypothetical cause it really can't be answered in regards for the PS3 at this time.

And before you answer, think of all the different qualities of DVD drives out there.

Looks like that information (Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD) will have to be passed raw via the HDMI to an A/V reveiver capable of processing those kinds of audio streams. As far as I know such an A/V receiver does not exist yet... all in due time... I'm sure there will be a few before years end, and then quite a few more in 2007 (at sub 5000$ hopefully).
