This is not a BD-related question, but not sure where else to post.

I am having an issue related to the Hulu (Plus) App for my 160 GB PS3. I've been hearing a lot of crackling on Hulu shows, e.g. Wrong Mans S1 E3. The sound is replicable and appears in the same places during playback.

I believe I have this isolated to the PS3 Hulu app. I don't notice the same cracking from playing BDs or Netflix. Playing the same episode from a PC connected to my receiver has no crackling. I've checked and redone the speaker wiring, replaced the HDMI cable, and I live in an apartment so I've never come close to driving speakers at a level that would risk blowing them.

My setup: Energy Take 5.0 + Dayton Sub 1200 + Yamaha RX V675. PS3 connected to receiver via HDMI, and HDMI out to Vizio LCD HDTV.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this something that can be fixed via receiver or PS3 settings? What can I try? I'm at a loss since I don't know what the PS3 Hulu app outputs audio-wise.

One-and-Only PS3 as Blu-Ray Player Thread

I was having trouble with all my content only being output as lossy on the PS3 so...

I checked the settings, making sure all the audio options were selected in the Audio Output Settings and Multi-Channel was set to OFF. All the HD Audio ones registered on my Denon 4520 as 7.1 and either DTS-HD MA or DolbyHD:

I don't know why they all show multi-channel, but they seem to show up right on at the receiver. Here is an overlay of the Denon 4520 audio info menu. Something interesting happened when I pressed fast forward into 1.5x speed:

Why does Multi-Channel keep showing up and is there a setting wrong somewhere? (Shouldn't it say 7.1 or something?) Is 3D + Dolby True HD the only Blu-ray playback limitation on the PS3?

Hi all.
Two quick questions, if you will...

When you stream a movie from Sony Video Unlimited, or download it to the hard drive first, then play it via HDMI to a receiver....

1* How do you tell the PS3 to output the original bitstream, rather than convert to PCM ?

2* How do you output 1080p24 (as Netflix can), rather than 1080p60 ?

Thanks very much, in advance....

Strange white vertical lines on bluray playback ps3

I've had the same problem before. I bought an expensive hdmi but it didn't work, Try to hook your ps3 directly to your tv, if it's gone then the receiver's setting is the problem. Set all your components (ps3/receiver) to maximum resolution. I found out that my receiver was set to 1080i instead of 1080p. Try it i hope it works.

My current setup:
PS3
Pioneer elite receiver
65" 1080p tv
Audioquest hdmi's

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Man Cave setup:

65" Wall mounted Samsung smart 3d tv; Pioneer Elite VSX-80 AVR; Sony PS3 Bluray player; 2 Klipsch RF3 L/R floor standing; 1 Klipsch RC3 Center; 2 Klipsch R-14m front heights; 2 Klipsch R-14m surround back; 2 Klipsch R-14s surround sides; 12" Mirage FRX-S12 subwoofer

I have an original (launch version) of the PS3 (Phat, 60GB drive, SACD, etc.) which has the red LED of death. Likely this is the CPU BGA's separating, as is common on the older units.

Does anyone know of a reputable place to have this repaired? I have other blu-ray players and consoles, but I would love to get this original device working again.

I can't help you, but it's nice to see another legacy PS3 Blu-ray user. Good luck!

I had the same exact unit, and went through the same problem. I found a tutorial on iFix it and did the fix myself but it didn't last too long. After the second try, I gave up and bought a slim unit. I still miss the SACD capability and gave away all of my PS2 games since I couldn't play them anymore.

Mine was also repaired, and also only lasted a while. I switched to a Slim unit for daily use, but don't want to give up on this "classic" unit - just need to find a reputable repair shop which can handle it.

I can certainly empathize. I wish I could point you in a reliable direction.

I used Sony to repair my PS3. They do an exchange and send you a refurbished unit (same model) which has a new outer shell. They send you a box to mail in your unit.

Thanks for your advice. But even years ago I heard that as you don't get your original unit back, you often get a newer model. I have read folks with Phat models getting Slim refurbs in return. Getting a Super Slim would be even worse.

As I have a launch model 60GB (full PS2 compat on two chips, SACD, 4 USB ports on the front, card readers, etc) with is still the most fully featured PS3 ever made, no way I can chance any sort of exchange. Even the 80GB and 40GB Phats lost lots of features compared with the launch 60GB (and even 20GB).

I also have two of the 60GB launch models that needed repair. The last repair was done two years ago. At that time you had the option of getting the same model back (60gb launch model) at a slightly higher price or at a lower price the slim unit. You will not be getting the unit you send in back, but a refurbished unit. I believe the price includes shipping both ways.

Thanks for the help - I'll try Sony.

Did your 60GB refurbs work well like new? I.e. low fan speed, etc.

I think that your PS3 is actually outputting correctly. 4/3/.1 is the same as 7.1, so you are getting all of the channels.

When you set playback to 1.5x, this is actually a PS3 internal feature - to make that work with audio, it has to convert the bitstream to PCM to give you the accelerated audio. But when 1x playback resumes, it should switch back to bitstream output. So, what you are seeing on the Denon makes sense.

Yes, I am very pleased with the refurbs and so far I have had no problems with them.
