You have to choose audio settings in both the A/V settings AND the BD/DVD settings menus.

My friend did the same thing. I never had this problem because I always go into every possible setup menu before playing anything.

Make sure you have the proper tick marks selected in the sound setup section of the PS3 for the older 5.1 codecs (DD and DTS) and not just the 2 ch PCM codecs. You can achieve higher audio fidelity over regular DVD even with Toslink.

You should be able to enjoy 640kbps DD and 1.5mpbs DTS with your current setup.

I've got to admit I'm a little confused by your description, though.

I'm not sure what the heck is going on but I have checked all my settings and everything looks fine but the sound is just not seeming up to par. Any tweaks, suggestions?

There's a volume adjustment on the PS3 itself. When you're watching a movie, hit triangle and go to the volume setting and make sure you don't have that turned down. Maybe that can help.

Just have to say, I just bought a PS3 yesterday after an unsuccessful day of owning a bdps300. the difference is night and day. well worth the $100 difference between the open box 300 and the PS3. No regrets here.

So far have enjoyed my recent purchase of the PSP3 but also bought a new receiver an Onkyo 605 for the True HD and between trying to learn both systems at the same time, it is giving me a headache. I am beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I added a new concert to my media server files and when attempting to play them on the PS3 only 5 seconds of a track plays before it skips to the next track.

I checked the file info on the PS3 and while it displays the correct length (11 mins 23 secs) the file size is off (PS3 = 823K ... actual size is 85MB).

Files play correctly on the PC. No problem with any other files ..just this set.

Files are WAV format ..using Media Player 11 on a XP Pro PC.

Ideas, thoughts, solutions ?

Thanks.

I have a similar problem playing AVI/DiVX files. If the file is over 1GB in size, it won't play the entire video. For example, it will show a 60 minute video as 54 minutes, and stops at that point.

I notice the same delays.

Netflix is great if you like good foreign movies and independent films. Fortunately, I like these but I'm also very frustrated with the new release extreme delays, especially Blu Ray.

My son bought a PS3 the other day and he is raving about it. How futuristic it is impressed him the most. I wil get one this week. I have a Samsung 1400 now and after three updates it has been flawless. Almost flawless before the updates.

I had that problem at one point. I don't think I messed with it too much. I just tried TVersity and it worked, so I went with it.

research this:
suspend your account for 90 days.
continue organizing your queue and then get whats available when the 90 days end. suspend for another 90 days and repeat.

if i read the terms correctly you can do this. i have a bunch of other stuff in my queue so i get that cra* while waiting on the new/old releases.

Wow, I guess I'm lucky to have the DC that I have. Even when movies are "Long Wait" I don't think I've ever waited 3 months for one. Probably doesn't hurt that I'm an hours drive from the Netflix HQ and most likely get movies from their #1 DC.

When I want new releases, I put old movies in the mailbox on Saturday, NF gets them on Monday and ships out the new ones same day so I get them on Tuesday. Except for once, I always get the movies releasing that Tuesday.

Pics from my TV here and here.

Am looking to buy a 40G PS3 for Blu-ray when my "economic stimulus" shows up- you know, the one your childrens' childrens' children will end up paying for, ahem ahem (steps off soapbox)- and have been reading this thread for a long while. Anyway, my question for you all is- why not BUY No Country For Old Men? Saw it when it was released in November, and will most likely be one of my first b) discs, along with 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner. Incidently, NOT a good couples movie, unless your sweetie can tolerate strong violence- am now banned from picking movies on rental night (er, oops... standard def only...). Would personally rather own than rent, if it's a good movie- and No Country is a great movie. Definitely earned its Oscars.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------"We are a way for the universe to know itself." Me too! However, I just received Harry Potter today! It takes soooo long to get anything on Blu-Ray.

My PS3 60GB fan is really loud, It starts out quite and then like 15 minutes into the movie the fan is really loud. What can I do about that? It is placed in a vertical postion, and pumps alot of hot air out of the back of the unit. It is not in a cabinet, it is out in the open with nothing around the unit.

Is there a table/weblink comparing all of the different PS3 models? I don't see anything on the FS or BB web sites for example that show this and they just have a blurb. I don't get it...why the need for different models per se.

What are differences/features of each and are there drawback and workarounds? I was looking at the box for the 40G model and it says something about not having MemoryStick or SD slots, etc in this particular model. Are there workaround such as using a USB drive to get more memory, etc and you have a hard drive so could use that and stream stuff to it from the the wireless?

Can the unit work without the hard drive or do I have to worry about that going? I saw some link online where they had a video showing the hard drive coming out.... looks like either a 3.5" SAS SCSI or IDE drive in there. Any links to replacement drives, preferably sourced lcoally.

Any other gotchas?

Any links that talk about the DTS MA firmware stuff? Links to the firmware websites in general? Discussion about the SD upconversion and how it was improved after firmware, etc? Comparison to Oppo players, etc?

I'm not really liking the idea of a game console for a BD player (not a gamer) but it seems to be the best bang for the buck and has decent SD upconversion and BD playback capability from what I see and this is a bit of an evolving standard so maybe holding off on a standalone player for a while might be good especially if the Panasonic DMP-BD50 doesn't hit Canadian streets in April/May (might be in US at that time but not here at that time).

I'm investigating the Oppo players such as the DV-983H to do SD discs due to the reported sub-par quality of the Panasonic DMP-BD30 (and likely DMP-BD50) models but $400 is quite hefty and would like to avoid this.

I've read somewhere that if you lie the PS3 down (horizontally), the heat is dispersed more efficiently. I believe that was an article from Engadget or someplace similar.

There's a pretty good chart on the different models at Wikipedia here. There are also numerous posts in this thread explaining the differences.

Can your computer work without it's hard drive? The PS3 is basically a computer, it needs it's hard drive. You can replace it, though. Instructions should be in your manual and in the online manual.

This is where most of that stuff is talked about. Info about most of the previous FW upgrades can be found at the PS3 Home page.

You're not required to play games with it if you own one, though you may be tempted after a while.

I don't understand why someone would even consider spending $400 on a DVD player when they could get a BD player for the same or less. And I own a couple hundred DVDs. But that's just me.

This is pretty odd.

I come home from work and go to play Warhawk Wednesday, but my controller won't turn the PS3 on. No big deal, I get up and turn it on myself, then sit back down and play Warhawk and MLB 08 for a few hours.

Then I turn it off, check my email and this thread, hear there's a firmware update available so I pick up the bluetooth remote to turn on the PS3. Won't turn on...again. Now I'm thinking that's pretty weird that none of my controllers will turn on the PS3 and within hours a firmware update is available.

I google firmware 2.17 and a hit comes up to PS3fanboy.com about the update. I notice a couple of guys say they lost all their bluetooth profiles today and their controllers wouldn't sync.

After downloading and installing the controllers work fine, and there's no real indication of what the firmware update is for, officially. And there are no update notes after the install.

Odd.

Another guy with a similar problem that just started today.

Brandon

Sounds like the other guy's problem is a bit different than yours...his controller is possessed and yours just wouldn't connect. I would chalk up your problem to coincidence. The fact that the PS3 restarted during the FW update may have had more to do with fixing your problem than the FW update itself.

Maybe you should ask Kevivoe if he's still having problems.

Pics from my TV here and here.
