Can someone tell me what the plan is here for both Bluray and HD-DVD systems. Can we people at the far end of the world still buy a Region Free player to watch software from other parts of the world as well as our local region.

I believe Blu-Ray has announced their region codes as:

* Region 1: North America, South America, East Asia except for China (India, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia etc.)
* Region 2: Europe and Africa
* Region 3: China, Russia and other countries

Australia and NZ are either not in that list or Region 3 as other countries

But in my own way, I am King. Hail to the King, baby.

From the sounds of this article Australia and New Zealand fall into the region of no region coding, which means they can play discs from any of the three regions. As for HD-DVD it has not yet been decided whether it will have a region coding system.

Does this mean it's best to buy a player from Australia/New Zealand?

I doubt it unless you are prepared for a long wait. I doubt the average Kiwi even knows there is a new format in launch mode. So I doubt the hardware suppliers have even thought about a launch down here. Perhaps Australia is a little further down the track.

No region code in this part of the world is just too exciting to believe. It is a detestable practice and any reasonable government should have consumer legislation that would make it illegal.

Why do they even bother seperating things by region anymore? For the most part I dont' bother with stuff from the UK so I don't care. I'm glad that Japan will share the same region.

It looks like Regions are now divided more by old NTSC/PAL formats (I assumed due to backwards compatability or something) as opposed to old regions which is good.
