On a fluke thing tonight I stopped by my Best Buy in Arkansas to pick up a HD movie to watch (16 blocks). Low and behold a sight I didn't expect to see. TWO Samsung Blu Ray players. Of course I had to pick one up. No software though.

One of the employees said that they should have in some movies this week.

Been there, done that in terms of owning the HD-DVD with no movies. BB made me wait for three days to pick up the movies. Let us know the upconverting ability.
Congrats.

Two BD players in stock hmm could be just like HD DVD with stores getting only small allocations.

At least let us know about its DVD upconversion while you wait for BD titles!

And tell us about your HD display as well. Going HDMI?

thanks!!!

dave :)

1080p and lossless audio. EVERY BD should have them both.

By the way I am running an Infocus 7200 to a 106" firehawk screen. It is run via DVI with a 30' Monster Cable (can't remember the model of the cable sorry). I previously had a Denon 5900 and the picture quality of that setup was very, very good on SD dvd's.

First time I booted up the player it did lock up. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come. Had to unplug player and start again. Second time worked great.

So far boot up was about half the time of my HD-DVD. 20-30 seconds on a SD.

1080p is on the menu as an option but you cannot highlight it. I don't know if this is because it is not active or because it is not hooked up to a 1080p projector. I wonder if it needs some kind of handshake.

First impressions of up conversion. I put in "layer cake" just because I watched it last night and thought I might be able to compare them (watched it last night on my HD DVD player). Up conversion looked a little soft to me. Seemed to have quite a bit of mosquito noise around titles. Could be the disc. I might have to check it out with the HD DVD again.

I really wish I had some blu ray discs to get this thing going.

Sure, if they follow HD DVD as their model for a launch. :)

Of course, someone just posted that there were 15 Samsung BD players sitting at his Best Buy in Colorado. BB was setting up the endcap BD display, Toshiba and HD DVD pushed to the side. But this was expected if you saw the internal Best Buy memo someone posted the other day. Best Buy is obviously pro BD, why remains to be seen or is not known at this time. But I suspect it has something to do with the fact 90% of the content and just about every major CE company is behind BD.

Oh well, the lead up to the 4Q "bonanza" of these two formats will be interesting. I'm officially excited to check out BD now. After seeing what HD DVD has to offer, it will be interesting to see BD production units and discs.

I did drop the $999. It sucked but I wasn't going to miss out on a player.

The sales associate said that this would be the only two players they would get for "quite" a while. Again there were only two units. The display and the one I purchased.

Is the picture quality similar to HD DVD? How is the player? Any quirks? Mine is on pre-order, but im struggling at $999.

Cool, Blu-ray's here!! So far, two reports from two different posters, both have had slight glithces. One with start up, and one with an un-readable disc. I'm sure it'll have it's little bumps like HD-DVD, although I was lucky enough to only have 2 hiccups, one which was the disc's fault...firmware "fixed" an already good setup for me.

Load times aren't instant from what both are saying(?) but HD-DVD doesn't bother me, so 25 sec for BD (about 15 sec faster than my HD-DVD) certailny won't bother me either. Like everyone else, I want to hear about PQ, upconversion, sound and sound-setups.

You lucky guys who have these, please let us know what your displays are, their resolutions, and the Samsung's settings... as well as receiver and audio settings too! Keep us posted! :D

They didn't push it to the side, they didn't need to. They have an actual Blu-Ray Display that has signs and an actual rack to hold the movies. I asked them what HDTV they were going to use to demonstrate the players? They said the sammy DLPs. This store has an attached magnolia. The HD-DVD stuff is sitting on an End Cap in the display area. It is hooked up to a Pioneer Plasma. The movies sit underneath on a gray shelf. I would say 2 thirds of the BB people are pro-BR. Their excuse is that it is a higher margin product @ $999.99.

I guess the war is officially on. Yes I am a lucky bastard with a $1000 dvd player and tonight I am going to watch a HD movie because I don't have a blu ray disc!!!

I have had the HD-DVD for about 3 weeks now and I will tell you that the picture is incredible.

It cracks me up that the studios release some very bizarre movies to highlight their newest products. If I was a studio exec trying to push one of the new formats I would release movies like LOTR trilogy, Star Wars or some movie that can really show off the capabilities of these machines. Don't get me wrong Unforgiven is a great movie, but I am not going to throw in that disc to show off my new HD player. Serenity shows off the picture quality pretty well. Sorry for the rant.

Anyway I WANT SOME BLU RAY MOVIES!!

If you have a high calibur film, you will want to ensure that you can sell as many copies as possible. With so few hardware, it isn't worth releasing your big guns yet, as the sales will be very low.

Though, you could release a title now, and always release a "remastered" version later on.

Two players arrived here tonight. As I was buying the HD DVD disk the boxes was being placed on a shelf along with other DVD/VCR combo recorder/players. There is no plan to display it but the store said its for sale NOW- June 14,2006. They are not expecting anymore for awhile. Perhaps in a few days one of the boxes will be cracked open for demo purposes.

I dread the picture comparison stories that will be written. Both technologies will offer great PQ. There are so many variables that go into PQ, plus a subjective interpretation, that I have little interest in the comparison.

I'm interested in the more objectively measured parameters: price, movie selection, machine stability, machine speed, etc.

Agreed, and in the end, most people will simply "see" what their mind wants to "see", anyway, which pretty surely taints just about any subjective comparison that could take place. ;)
