Sony's latest PS3 news is that they will have a whopping 100,000 units in Japan, 400,000 units in the US, and ZERO (yep as in none) units in Europe.

That doesn't bode well to me - how many will say "screw this, I'm tired of waiting"?

Given this news & the $$$$$$ Sony is going to be shelling out for the battery fiasco anyone think Sony may just go t*ts up?

Note: I have NO dog in this show, this just seems like really bad news (and lack of competition is NEVER good for the consumer :D )

It's just my opinion & it's worth exactly what you paid for it.

Looks like another nail in the coffin for HD DVD!! That first shipment will by more than 10X over all the HD DVD players purchased thus far...All will see out as well!

There are more than a handful of [op amps] that sound so good that most designers want to be using them as opposed to discreet transistors. Dave Reich, Theta 2009

It means there will be over 500,000 BR players in homes by mid-November.

Yup, probably bad news for HD-DVD. In almost an instant HD-DVD will be left in the dust by shear numbers of players in the wild.

Wow. Do you work for Sony? That was some of the most impressive spinning I have EVER seen.

Yup. HD DVD is dead.

Oh, wait. How many of those will actually be used for HD movie playback?

Don't go format neutral. Your wallet will thank you.

And you really believe that every person that gets that 500,000 shipment has the capability to playback BR? I can believe that if they announce how many BR movies are actually sold during that period. But you got to be kidding yourself in saying this when we all know every person getting that shipment of PS3's doesn't have an HDTV.

Price on Ebay for PS3 just rose from 1'200$ to 1'500$ US for the first 2 months.

Sony should raise their launch price even more, 900$ US would be a good price point.

They would sell all anyway.

It would help the shareholder...

Can I have some of your kool-aid please? Sony has now cut back their release numbers, not once, but TWICE to paper thin stock. Europe will receive NO PLAYERS until March 2007, completely missing the holiday season. Japan gets meager scraps--100,000 players and the US gets a paltry 400,000. Tell me how Sony is putting the hurt on HD-DVD by continuously delaying and cutting back on their release numbers/dates. I'm hurting so bad. Everyone was trying to 'ramp up' for the PS3 release which is now a virtual non-issue as only extremely lucky people or those with $2,000 to spend on eBay will be able to get ahold of one. This looks bad for Japan as well which was very eager to get their hands on the PS3 (a very pro-Sony area gets stiffed). Additionally this gives HD-DVD more inroads into Europe.

This is completely GOOD news for the HD-DVD camp, these comments in this thread are ridiculous.

Yes, and there is no guarantee that the attach rate to BD movies will be acceptable. I agree that BD film purchases should spike briefly, but most people will not use the console for BD playback, they will use it for games. Every HD DVD player sold is being used to play movies, the same can never be said for PS3.

This holiday season is going to be pretty intense on the electronic sales because a lot of peoples were waiting for the PS3 to buy. I'm not speaking about kids playing game on the xbox360, but real gamers that have money (hence the price point).

As you said, we will have to wait to see the numbers, until then, it's all speculation.

The strange thing in the original text is that they still plan to release the same 6 mil units by march 2007, so they had increased their production capacity?

That's a 1.5 million unit reduction in volume, you're going to sell an item that you have no way in hell of knowing you'll get?

Outside of the fanyboys who live & die with Sony I can't see this being good news for Sony = lots of angry customers never helps the company.

You're making a pretty desperate excuse to cover up the most obvious fact of all.

That's 500,000 Blu-ray playing machines hitting the streets.

The name "Playstation" plus hype guarantees a Tickle Me Elmo phenomenon up through Christmas, regardless of anything else.

Those machines will sell out by Christmas.

The aftermarket on Ebay for these things is probably going to be even more absurd than the Xbox360's were at $800-$1000 a pop.

If I get a PS3 at all, it stays sealed, and if I see something like that...adios amigos.

I'll have a nice Christmas one way or the other. ;)

I can't believe anyone ever really believed that 2 million by end of 2006 figure anyways, but that's just Sony overhyping themselves yet again.

The news today really just sets things back to a far more typical game console launch scenario.

I would like to point out the fact that at the xbox360 launch, there was quite a bit of an ebay frenzy and many tried the launch games, then put it on ebay saying they would retake it in 2 months. Because of the $ gain, it was worth the wait. While other were trying to get even more box to resell.

It's not a recall, if Sony would increase the price of the PS3, that would just please the shareholder with the exact same number of sales.

The original plan was to have 4 million units by the end of 2006

The launch numbers are 500,000.
400,000-North America. 100,000-Japan

2 million units are still planed to be released total by the end of 2006.
1.2 Million going to Japan by the end of 2006.

So that's 2 million Blu-ray players (if they live up to 2m), or atleast 500,000.
6 million are stilled planed by the end of the fiscal year in 2007.

For those saying 400k to the US its 400k to NA which means probably 80-100k to Canada. Sub 400k console availability is 1/2 the 360 launch in the US and that thing was scarce. This is almost a non-launch and with 100k in japan im sure thats what they consider it as well. Then sony spinning the 6 mill by march 2007. Try more along the lines of 2 mill, and 6-7 mill by the end of 2007. By then MS should have atleast a $100 price cut and have shipped around 20 million units.

Another nail in HD-DVD? hardly. So lets think that world sales of the ps3 by 2007 could possibly be 800-900k. With the add-on and hd-dvd players numbering in around 500k real players. Thats about a wash in actually used movie players and thats giving the PS3 alot of credit as a movie player. More than likely hd-dvd will still be the market leader at the start of 2007.

MS has them right where they want them imo. They have the HD DVD addon that will sell well this winter and imo keep the content buying base of HD DVD easily ahead of BD and since PS3 is fumbling around that buys them a bit more time to up the spec ante with the 360AV which is coming and imo negates the spec advantage of the PS3 today as it trumps it with an easy calculated move. MS isn't going to be punk'd here.

Those machines will sell out by about 2 minutes after midnight on the day they are released. I know in our area (outside Washington DC) there are thousands of people who are ready to buy right now, including me.

Oh, and put me on the list for those that'll use it for HD playback.

I don't understand some people......i thought the sole reason for getting into high definition was to have better quality pictures and better quality sound.....what will the Playstation 3 really give you as regards quality ? If the Playstation 3 has great movie playback i'll spend all next year making love to Pamela Anderson ( Cameron Diaz is invited too )

People seem to accept lower quality too much.

When Sony says 500k are they over or underestimating the actual shipments? Do we know when full fledged production started on the PS3?

I would say that the chances are close to zero that they are underestimating at this point.
