"We got good news for all the Blu-ray fanboys out there. You are no longer going to have to settle for Samsung's Blu-ray player as Panasonic is shipping their DMP-BD10 Blu-ray player to distributers now. That means that consumers might be able to get their hands on a player within a week or two and they should hit mass-market retailers in the beginning of October. Price is still the $1,299 that was annouced a few months ago though."

They need to bring the damn price down 1200 bucks way outta my league. I have all Panny equiptment ( 47x54J RPTV, DVD S77 & XR55 receiver) but this player is way to expensive. I will get the new HD-DVD A2 and when Panny comes down in price get the Panny BR.

Great, they're shipping to distributers but still don't have any specs up on their site for this unit.

And yet, Crutchfield just pulled the player from their site. What's going on here?

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=724016

HDBeat also reported that the Pioneer was still on track for this year, while Audioholics was reporting its delayed till next year. Andy Parsons should really orchestrate the propaganda a little better.

Great looking player!
But the $1300 is too steep for me.

Personally, I'd wait until everything is out and then start demoing and doing legwork and all the rest of that.

If you've waited this long, you may as well wait a little bit longer and see all the options on the table.

Only $1,299? Ill pass on this one. The Samsung seems to do fine with the Warner and Disney releases. I think the BD player prices need to go down, not up.

One of the 'givens' with electronics is...price is adversely effected by technology. I ain't payin $1200 just to be the first on my block.

Not bad that's only a couple of weeks.

Robert, Have you seen this player and what are your thoughts?

Wait a sec. Panasonic was talking about upgrading this player via firmware to decode/pass TrueHD and MA, which both require v1.3. Have those plans been cancelled?

Since there won't be an HDMI 1.3 receiver capable of decoding these things for a while, not sure why you would want 1.3 other than some added color depth no eye will ever see. If the disk player can decode these streams into uncompressed audio, then HDMI 1.3 is not necessary, as all versions of HDMI can transport uncompressed audio. Not to mention the player has analog outs.

HDMI 1.3 chipsets are currently not available to manufacturers. These first generation players cannot decode the lossless audio codecs internally and thus not output lossless codecs via analog audio outputs. You need HDMI 1.3 to output the lossless codecs digitally, HDMI 1.2 will not work.

In order to play the lossless audio codecs (such as Dolby True HD), you have to have HDMI 1.3 or decode the codec in the player. Neither of these options will be available with these first generation players. If that is important to you, and you don't want to have to upgrade soon, you will need to wait for HDMI 1.3 equipped players or players that can decode these advanced codecs internally. Most likely 2007.

It has already been confirmed from Dressler @ Dolby on this very forum that the Panasonic will decode Dolby TrueHD internally via a firmware update. And this is a player that is just weeks away, not 2007. There is no reason to believe that other updates for other players won't follow.

This Panny Blu-Ray player has been the one I've been waiting for. So, I put my deposit down at the local Tweeter this morning. I should be getting the first player they receive, so I hope to have some initial info and a nice review for all of you. The planned delivery day, by the way, is October 3rd. Let's hope it's a little earlier than that!

That's in line with the October 5 date I was given by Magnolia. They also told me 9/24 for the Pioneer, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

Tweeter also quoted me October 6th for the Sony. Seems like the Panny will be just about perfect as far as price (being that it is right between the Sony and Pio Elite). From the look of things, the Panny just might be the best of the bunch.

Fingers Crossed. At the very least I have the 30 day return policy.

yoyoniner,

I did a search looking for the quote by Roger Dressler that the Panny player can be firmware upgraded to decode Dolby TrueHD. No luck finding such a quote. I know the new Sony and Pioneer players will not have this internal decoding. Can you provide a link for this firmware update statement? Otherwise, I find it difficult to believe that this lossless audio decoding can be achieved with a simple firmware update.

The Panasonic player is the first of what is expected to be several that will decode multichannel TrueHD and output it in PCM form just like other PCM soundtracks. Might be worth the wait...

For a 48/24 movie source, the disc space saved using TrueHD is roughly 3.5 GB. (That's enough for a 2-hour movie on DVD!)

Thanks for the link. My interpretation of "what is expected to be" in Roger's quote implies uncertainty. I guess I will believe it when I see it. The launch of both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD has been anything but smooth.
