This is fascinating. So why aren't the Hollywood studios offering TrueHD at 24/96? Or even at 20/48? Since this title has already been released, it is certainly possible. But why not?

This must be a real bit-bucket stretch!

Nice review Cliff.

I was really hoping that the BD-10 would be on par with the Panasonic S77/97 when it came to SD DVD upscaling abilities.

What resolutions did you try upscaling SD DVD to?

Thanks,
Brad

Hang on, what? I had the Panny for a few days (and took those infamous pics), and it most certainly did not output 1080p24.

Then something horrible has happened. :)

You are correct, I had too much cough syrup. According to CED way back when, it *was* going to be capable of 1080p24, but some chip changes appear to have fouled that up. My bad.

Not necessarily. I had the Panny hooked up to my Ruby with HDMI, had it set up for 1080p and got 1080p60. There was one setting in the video menu, however, a video mode of some sort. When it was enabled, Ruby reported getting 1080i60. Now, Ruby doesn't accept 1080p24 via HDMI, afaik. How would Ruby react if it got suddenly fed 1080p24 via HDMI, I wonder...

update: According to the manual Video Mode has nothing to do with 1080p24.

Please, feel free to call me by my first name, Petri.

Hey Asab or any of you Panny owners out there,
Have you fiddled with the video settings on the unit? dlgreen/gemrookie complained that there is a lack of 3 dimensionality.
Or did all of you forgot about the rule of electronic products - RTFM? :D

WriteSimple....... I messed with it some but on my setup i found it to be unnessary...... My Vision One is unreal with good Blu-Ray Stuff and HD DVD WOW Very good ...I really think both formats will be around a long time....The Sammy is a good player but the Panny is a better built and thought out unit...The Sammy's audio is poor to my ears, the Panny has great audio now and more to come later..300 dollars more but to me very worth it..I will pick up the Sony when it arrives too.......Asab.........

I've not seen the manual or the damn player itself, but that is interesting, isn't it?

Where's the link to the manual?

DNR is adjustable on the player in a range from 0-5. It comes from the factory set at 0.

Defautls on all DNR optons on the Panny are 0 (off).

The array of picture adjustments on the Panny are just amazing...... A calibrators paradise.

Which IMO is where there is value to be had with stand alone players sold at inflated prices- wrt PS3 vs the world. Analog audio quality, upscaling performance, supported output modes, and playback quality (including not having bugs like CUE, WTW BTB clipping, color space conversion errors, etc.) are others too IMO.

I'm glad to see there is at least some vaguely justifiable reason to purchase a Panny over a cheaper unit. I am disappointed to see 1080p24 not be an option however. *shrug*

I have been very happy with my Panny and do not regret it one bit. Great picture with great sound... After having it for almost a week now, I still feel there was no reason to wait for the sony or others...

page 29 of the manual (glossary) they mention a film mode ... talking about 24fps ... did you try that out with a 1080p24 compatible display ? to see what the panny sends ?
