I think he's busy gathering all those early copies he's suppose to get? I'm sure he's writing the reviews for them right now! Can't wait...

Stevie...if it's a piece I'll tell you...I have both players...

BTW- I laughed when I saw this thread:D. I'm at the Tigers / A's game watching my team get beat!
It's gotta be 30 degrees outside and the sun going down.
I have it hooked up, it powered up after unpacking but it has one of those stupid flip up doors so my IR emitter keeps it from closing.... the remote is a piece as well. I'll be going HDMI AUDIO &VIDEO thru my new Halcro processor. Got rid of my non HDMI lex MC-12.

Tomorrow is movie night...'Click' and some other blockbuster..anyone make a recommendation of a BluRay flick?

No one should have to spend money on 5th element. Every Blu Ray copy should be burned.

I would love to see an upconverted image of T2 (I assume everyone has it) and T2 Blu Ray.

From what I've seen so-far with respect to the Paramount titles, the images have had better color depth, less noise, less grain and better fine detail. Of course, I'm using the Panny for the comparison and others have reported that with viewing on the Samsung, the image is slightly softer than the HD-DVD versions, yet still manages to offer a better image due to improved color and less visible grain and noise. My hunch is that the initial controversy regarding codecs is going to quiet down very soon as the current playing field seems to point to excellent transfers regardless of compression scheme.
Of particular note are: "Four Brothers" and "Sleepy Hollow". I found that both of these titles just "popped" more than their HD-DVD counterparts. I think the Mission Impossible discs should make for some very interesting comparisons.

I've made my way through 15 or so titles at this point and the Panny has predictably been stellar on everything. Of course, stuff like "Full Metal Jacket" still looks pretty bad, but I think that's intended. It looked bad on HD-DVD well. The biggest surprise to me over the last few days has been the improvement in picture quality on the Paramount tiles. I really didn't expect that to be the case given the VC-1/Mpeg-2 debate. I'm really hoping that some of this anti-Mpeg-2 vitriol calms down around here. Shouldn't we all just be happy that we are getting to view such fantastic HD material? Personally, I couldn't care less as to what codec is used as long as the results are exceptional.

Oh yeah... I'm VERY pleased with the upconverstion capabilities of the Panny. I was comparing the Star Wars Episode III DVD upconverted on the Panny to a DVR recording I made of the same movie off of HBO HD from a few months ago. Obviously the HD version was superior, but the Panny was so close it was scary.

I think it may be a good idea to elaborate a bit more on this so that all people appreciate the significance of your thoughts…….at least before the troll hounds discover this thread.

In other words, are you finding any Paramount movies on Blu-Ray (encoded with Mpeg-2 on BD 25) that look better than their VC-1 HD-DVD counterparts ?????

I think that may make sense, because it's very likely that the Panasonic is a superior machine to the HDA1 - hence better picture quality of the same print. And it should be at almost 3x the cost of the Toshiba.

No animals were harmed in the creation of this sentence.

I'd say it is significantly better. And, I think the Toshiba was a pretty good machine at upconverting. It also handily outperforms my Denon DVD-2910.

I haven't had any problems with macroblocking. Did you read my review? I've only seen macroblocking once during an action scene in The Fifth Element. That could easily be attributed to a badly done transfer.

Yes, Paramount titles, so far, have looked better in Mpeg-2 Blu-Ray than their VC-1 counterparts on HD-DVD. Keep in mind, these are very slight improvements but I do think that for most videophiles, it would be a noticable improvement. Fine detail is sharper and film grain is more smoothly rendered (See "Sleepy Hollow"). Color and image depth (3D effect) have more visual "Pop". I'm definitely not the first to report this as even Samsung users have seen some similar improvements over the HD-DVD versions.

I'm certainly not the only person to rave about the Panny. Reaction to the player has been overwhelmingly positive from a multitude of different sources and reviewers.
