If this link is correct, than THIS is that firmware.

All of this sucks pretty bad... if you want a region free BD player then don't update the samsung firmware!!!

If an NR update is coming what happens if you wait to update? Will you have to update twice or will it be all new firmware again?
No point in doing this twice if you can wait.

Going by Samsungs history of no firmaware for 4 months and now 2 firmwares in 2 weeks??? I really think this is the one and only firmware.

I just applied the update and Fifth Element's PQ was definately way better. Where it looked very poor before it now looks good.

Audio thru the HDMI cable also was much better.

It's possible that the DNR algorithm of the Genesis chip produces different levels of artifacts (like image softness) based on the source signal content. For instance, a very clean signal to start might receive minimal processing look relatively unchanged, whereas a noisy signal (like the 5th E) might be rendered much softer and more processed looking in comparison to the same signal without DNR.

My old ProScan TV had DNR that worked this way... good stuff looked sharp and detailed, but noisy signals seemed to overtax the DNR algorithm and ended up looking much worse by comparison.

In other words, the algorithm didn't introduce the same artifacts on all signals... it seemed to get worse the noisier the source signal was.

1080p and lossless audio. EVERY BD should have them both.

non-linear concepts seem lost on many AVSers these days...

I just got a disc in the mail today from Samsung. Im assuming its the DTS fix I ordered 2 weeks ago. Is there any way I can use my computer to compare the file size? Im a little worried to try it in the Sammy... Dont want to screw up anything!!!

Checked it out on the computer and its 49,152kb. Looks a little smaller than the other firmware. Guess I will disregard it.

Just finished my upgrade. Popped in a disc and I think the PQ is definitely better. And I have the dots instead of the hourglass so I know it worked.

can't wait for that NR fix, that is the only issue I have with the Sammy right now

I'm from Italy , on October 17th Sony has released here 6 Blu Ray titles:

HITCH
A KNIGHT'S TALE
SWAT
UNDERWORLD EVOLUTION
THE EXHORCISM OF EMILY ROSE
HOSTEL

Today I bought all of them and compared with the USA versions of

HITCH
A KNIGHT'S TALE
SWAT
UNDERWORLD EVOLUTION

I had already bought on amazon; I own the USA Samsung player, even if in Italy the REGION B model is now on sale. The discs are exactly the same USA versions with an added Italian Dolby Digital track, but all of the have the USA original english 5.1 track.

I'll not upgrade the firmware to have the chance of reading all the discs, american and Italian ones. Maybe if on oct 31 I'll read on this forum that the new firmware fixing the DNR problem gives a real improvement, I'll consider to buy also the Italian Region B player (but I think I'll gon on Panasonic) and upgrade my Samsung to Region A.

For the users who have not upgraded their player yet, the picture quality of THE EXHORCISM OF EMILY ROSE and HOSTEL is very good and are worth the purchase, even if they are not on sale in USA; you can buy the italian version even if Labelel "B" and play it on your players.

Mods, I think it would be a good idea to sticky this. I'm sure there are Samsung owners who don't frequent the board much. It will prevent a lot of "When is the update coming?" threads.

No animals were harmed in the creation of this sentence.

2 more questions about the firmware:

1) has anyone tested to edit the files and discover where the region code is being set? Maybe a new modded firmware could be done to leave the player as region free

2)
Has anyone seen any noticeable picture quality improvement in Blu Ray disc playing after the update?

thanks to all

Hello: It would be smart for someone to call Samsung and ask them what does the firmware do instead of all this speculation and waste of one's time wondering. I will call on monday and make inquiry if someone else does not proceed me.

If you look back in this thread you will see some of us had and they do not have a clue. Except to state this is not the sharpness fix.

my guess is that this update is from overseas and communication is lacking at Samsung, seen it many times before

it doesn't matter, this update drastically improves the Sammy, slap it in and enjoy!

Firmware fixes:

Dts "judder" problem fixed
Allows 4:3 pillarboxing (BD material only)
Improved load times
Changes hour glass to "colored dots"
Corrects analog outs, if reversed
Allows playback of BD-R/BD-RE discs
Improved PQ of BD and DVD playback
Parental control problem fixed
Fixes HDMI compatability problems with certain displays
Loses region free abilities

It was only after the FW that I was able to select the 1080P......was only allowed up to 1080i prior to this.

Where is this list of fixes coming from? If this one is real than what some of us are seeing is not just wish fulfillment...

I just did the upgrade. It went very smooth, very easy, no problems at all. Now I can record video on my HD camcorder, edit it on my Sony Vaio, burn it to a BD disk and play it back in the Samsung. Until today I could not do that, so the upgrade was worth its weight in gold!

Picture quality looks the same to me, but I have not had any complaints about pq with the Samsung and I also own the Toshiba (I have been arguing that there is no difference in quality between the two, just in the software being viewed).

No difference in audio quality that I can detect either, and here too I have been very happy with the Samsung audio.

Startup is ever so slightly faster, but nothing to hardly even mention.

So, the main difference as far as I can see is the ability to view blu ray disks recorded from my Sony Vaio.

Just curious do you still get the hour glass and dots during transition? I had updated direct from Samsung a couple of weeks ago and I stillget those.

I'm a little confused. I thought you could only have either the hourglass OR the dots, not both.
