Robert, in one of these threads thought that it would be about $100 off MSRP. That is what I was trying to get it for. No response.

The Samsung BD-P1200 is a HDMI 1.3 player so it should output TrueHD to a HDMI 1.3 receiver for decoding. You don't have one of those now, but you might at some point in the future. Until then, you'll just use the Dolby Digital 5.1 track on those titles.

You don't need HDMI V1.3 to benefit from Dolby TrueHD. Audio-wise, all 1.3 gives you is compressed digital audio over HDMI, so the receiver wil be able to do the lossless de-compression, instead of the player. No net gain, I should think, but lets suck it and see first.

In the meantime, V1.1 will allow you to carry Dolby TrueHD sound tracks that have been decompressed by the player, and are simply carried as LPCM audio. Just as if they were multi-channel DVD-A outputs. Many current receivers can already process these properly, and apparently do so very well. I'm probably preaching to the converted here, seeing your other posts. However.

Next.

Unfortunately, just because a piece of equipment carries an new HDMI version, it does not mean that ALL of the new functionality is actually implemented. Compressed TrueHD for example, will only be carried on V1.3 if the manufacturer has chosen to implement that particualr function. I would hope that they would, but they are NOT compelled to by the HDMI specs. Very unfortunate. We just have to trawl the manufacturer's secs to find what we want. Just seeing V1.3 isn't enough on it's own.

Not sure I understand your post.

Anyway I just sent everyone an email. Sorry for the delay, these new technology products are very difficult to project and rely on.

joffer, I agree. If HD DVD can give us multi-channel TruHD audio why can't BD do so? I asked the Samsung BD product manager the same question and was told the Samsung G3 BD players will have some lossless audio decoder built-in and is due to be released sometime in Q4 '07 or no later than Q2 '08.

Otherwise on paper the BD-P1200 looks great and I am looking forward to having one in my home and as a demo unit in one of our theater demo rooms.

I had been trying to hold out on buying a player until the lossless codecs were added to the players. However, the way things are going, if you want a player this year, it looks like the best bet is to get one with HDMI 1.3, accept a reliance on uncompressed PCM for now, and wait for a new receiver or pre/pro later to get the DTS- HD MA later on.

So Robert, could you ask the Samsung people if they will have a firmware upgrade to at least get TrueHD. A person hates to spend this much money and not at least have some of the audio codecs. Thanks.

gsearles,

I am in the same position as you. I have been waiting to buy a player, but none of them seem to want to put in audio codecs. The only poroblem with these players sending the signal to a receiver is that from what I understand, is that you will get the soundtrack sent over, but not all the sound effects and special effects sound that are part of the disk but not the soundtrack. The player needs to decode those to get all of them. If I am wrong about that let me know, but it seems I did read that somewhere on this forum.

I've never heard this before - that must have been a misunderstanding. If you buy a Blu Ray player this year with HDMI 1.3, and next year buy a receiver with HDMI 1.3 that decodes DTS- HD Master Audio, and play a disc that has a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack, you'll hear every bit of sound on the disc.

I think only the special features will not be transmitted in lossless format. The main feature should pass through via HDMI 1.3 in all sound formats (including sound effects, etc.). You just need a capable reciever (the new Denon's are coming out this fall).

I heard this information on the HT Guys podcast #145 were they talked to two guys from Dolby. They said that sound can come from three places. One of them is called button sounds. One is the regular soundtrack, and if you have the ethernet in your machine, you could stream direct comments into the player. The player would then mix all of this. If you sent the signal to the receiver, you will miss out on two of those features. If you don't care about this, then it is not a big deal, but if you want it, your machine will need to do the decoding. I think I understand what they were saying. You can always go listen for yourselve, but I think I got close to what they were saying.

Not exactly! You may have a sub-program like PIP running along with the movie with both audio at the same time.

I did ask and was told they have no decision on a lossless audio firmware upgrade for the BD-P1200. However, lossless audio decoding in the design spec of the Samsung G3 BD player.

Do you mean "built in" lossless decoding?

THANKS!!

Oh, I see what you guys are talking about now. The movie soundtrack will transmit fine, but extra "layers" of sound so to speak will not. Oh well... I still want this player, don't think I can wait for another whole generation of players. I still can't beleive it's taking this long to sort out this kind of thing, BD-J, etc...

I don't think anyone wants to lose any features. Here's the Dolby blurb explaining how the decoding works:

Dolby TrueHD Audio Decoding

Knowledge is power.

I hope Robert's update this week is better news that I just got from Buy.com...

I had pre-ordered the BD-P1200 from them a few weeks ago, but today got a "sorry, product no longer available, order cancelled" email from them... Of course, the product page is also down from their site. Arggg...
