Just rented "Predators" and it wouldn't play in my Pioneer 51 but plays fine in the 1200, FW 2.8

I bought a Panasonic DMP-BD80. Played all BD that I threw in it so far. Plays standard-def DivX videos, both 50Hz and 60Hz, though some are wrongly scaled. Plays AVCHD discs, but 60Hz only. Plays AVCHD from Secure Digital card. Plays 1080p60 @ 20 Mbit/s from a recordable DVD, and @ 28 Mbit/s from a card. Not a PS3, but twice cheaper.

If you do not need BD and DVD ISO support, or 50Hz DVD and AVCHD playback, then the Pana seems like a good choice. The newer BD65/BD85 can stream videos from Netflix, I wish I had the BD85.

The BDP1200 sits in a closet.

New FW (v. 2.9) seems to be available at http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/BD-P1200, if anyone is still interested.

Yes I am interested. 2.8 came out at the perfect time for me because that's when I started renting the new releases. They all played, so I am not retiring this player until the Oppo 93 streams Netflix for me in Canada. That is the only reason for me to get it, especially if with the reports are true, about the upconversion quality going backwards. I am not buying the Oppo just for its faster response time and better sound on my 2.0 audio setup.

According to the Samsung support site, 2.9 was released way back on April 21st. Is that correct, or has there been a recent release?

Firmware 2.8 was issued in April 2010. Firmware 2.9 is new.

No daring early adopter will risk this and let us know???

I have just one BD player (the 1200). It would be awful if I can no longer use it.

I installed 2.9 when it came out. No issues at all. I don't use the 1200 much because its in a secondary system but I've played a few titles and everything worked fine (including the recent Twilight Zone Season 1).

Unrelated to the newer FW update.

I use the Boz Scaggs live DVD to check if new FWs solve the stutter at chapter points. No luck yet again with 2.9.

But there is something puzzling with that disc, or with that disc and this player.

If I go to a track using the menu, the player goes crazy after a particular moment.

If I start from the beginning, even jumping from chapter to chapter to reach the same track, the track plays OK.

Any theories?

Is there a way to ask Samsuck to make available the original FW, the one with no stutter?

Does anyone know which release was the more recent that provided no-stutter playback of DVDs?

Is 2.9 only available by Disc? I cannot find the update instructions by internet
anymore. Plus when I tried to do the 2.9 update, a message appears I have the latest update.
2.8 is the last one I updated. I have a hard time loading The Other Guys.

2.9 was released kinda stealth. As far as I can tell it was released without updating the release date? You are probably experiencing the same issue we have been having over on the BD-UP5000 thread. The last 2-3 updates won't load from online/Internet and we have to download a disc image. For whatever reason Sammy has abandoned the online update process on the older players. Why? I don't know, but it is now the case.

Not the case here, I updated 2.7 & 2.8 online.

10 Commandments played with 2.9

But Disney Tangled & Against All Odds both wouldn't.
Tangled froze 10 sec into the castle shot and Odds stuck on the Commentary legal page ("All views expressed....).

Try this with Tangled. It's worked for us with The Sorcerers Apprentice and now Tangled with the Sammy BD-UP5000 combo.

When the castle loads, hit stop, possibly 2-3 times, then press disc menu. With the 5k both movies go right to the disc menu without all the bull, actually a nice feature. No luck with Bambi, however, we are locked out from hitting stop, so we can't press disc menu to get to the main menu working around the problem. I've been waiting for close to a month for a fix on that one. Requests to make Splice, Batman/Superman Apocalypse, Chaplin, and Thirteen Ghosts play at all and fixes for Sorcerers... etc. have gone unfixed for months and months.

I'm curious to know if this works for either of the movies for you. I will have to try Against all Odds, love that movie, but very recently it was on in HD on Comcast OnDemand, so will be a while. First I have heard of issues with Image Entertainment titles on any player, must be some new DB-Java/DRM crap?

Thanks Mr. Kludge,

Your suggestion worked for Tangled but not for Against All Odds.
I tried different times and combinations.

Ya, I thought it would for Tangled. There is a possibility that AAO was authored for Image by WB or the same authoring house as WB is currently using. Does it get stuck after previews etc. with menu on the display or where you would expect the menu to come up. If so the p1200 may be similarly afflicted with either new DRM, BD-java code or a common bug that is messing up many WB, Lionsgate and Disney titles. Does Bambi play in the p1200? It would on the 5k if we were not locked out of pressing stop on that annoying Disney castle. So far almost every Disney released since Sorcerer's... gets stuck there. Bambi is the only one that won't play at all, the others you can use the trick, if it gets stuck. It is actually a nice feature since you can bypass all the crap and go right to the menu and on the 5K none of the copyright annoyances come up either, but do on other players (LG BH200 for example). The WB/Lionsgate (authored by WB) that get stuck before the menu are; Splice, Superman/Batman Apocalypse, and Thirteen Ghosts that are all WB and Chaplin that is Lionsgate. All these have the exact same problem.

I encourage you to report any disc playing issues directly to Samsung. They have told me they are working on new firmware for all of their players. Only some of or just one player has issues with the same titles. My bet is that all the older players will have issues with; Sorcerer's, Bambi and now Tangled. Wondering how Tron and Tron Legacy next week and The Incredibles the week after? will fair.

And unfortunately your fix isn't working for "The Incredibles".
The castle comes up but I am unable to stop the player and then it freezes.
About 10-15 secs in, I get a language menu superimposed over the castle. I select english and it sits frozen.

Yes, I am having the same exact problem with the UP-5000. Over the weekend I discovered that by rolling the player back to the release prior to the Avatar/Fox release that the recent affected Disney movies play without problem. You might want to try that if you still have the discs/ISOs for the older firmware on the p1200. On the 5K the 1.5 Avatar release killed about a dozen old Fox titles and it appears that old Fox code got mixed in with the new Avatar DRM code. We discovered that Pirates 3 would not load the menu so you could not play it. 1.6 corrected that disney issue and the Fox issues, but apparently something else in it is causing these new Disney issues. The WB and Lionsgate issues we are seeing now are new and don't seem to be addressed in the older firmware.

Over the weekend we also discovered that some random Disney DVDs released in the past year also do not play. The player ejects them and says the disc cannot be played and to check the TV system like it is detecting a PAL or non-region 1 disc. I think this is an old bug that has now shown up again. It has been detected with Old Dogs, Sorcerers... and A Christmas Carol so far.

Report this to Sammy. I would suspect that many of the older players now have these issues, and possibly newer ones, if they have BD code based on the old?

I am still using 2.8 after trying to load 2.9 online shortly after it was released. A message appeared saying I have the lastest, which I do not.
On a minority of Blu-rays it takes two or more loads to play , but everything has played.

I would suggest that you download 2.9 and burn a cd. The online updates for many older samsung players have been stuck on older releases. With the bd-up5000 it's stuck 3 releases back.

I suggested that to myself, but I do not know how to do it. I will try the non CD method again.
The BD-UP5000's is more recent from Jun 11/10 even though its numbered only 1.6, whereas the BD-P1200's is from Apr 21/10.

Do you use a mac or a PC? It's easy piesy on a mac, you can use DiscUtility that is bundled with every release of OS X. On he PC you can download the free imageburn program. You can also request an upgrade disc for free from Sammy, but over on the BD-UP5000 thread over the past year or so many have been receiving discs that were burned incorrectly by just placing the image file on a data CD-R rather than burning the ISO image using a burning program. This was done by Samsung themselves since whoever has been sending them out does not know how to do it or how to follow the instructions posted on the website. So your success may vary.

Also, for online updates on many of the older Sammy players different things have been happening. For some they have never updated the sites the online comes from (not the web site, but the location it goes to to update, probably since they changed their URLs at some point?). My guess is that with 2.9 the same thing has happened to the p1200, either that or they never posted it to the online location and 2.8 is what is still there. There is a date discrepancy in the website. I think they have the old date for 2.8 listed for the 2.9 firmware? Tread lightly on 2.9. When they "fixed" older movies that were broken by the Avatar release (not sure which on that was) the next release (I assume 2.9, but may be 2.8) introduced the freeze at the castle issue with Disney titles. Most likely if you have the release before Avatar or possibly the one for it you will be fine, however you won't be able to deal with the new DRM code introduced last year unless you are running the fully capable Avatar release.

Same here, although I replaced it years ago with an Oppo BDP-83 (awesome player BTW), I still use it in the Family Room and bring it to the cottage in the summer. Works like a charm.

I replaced mine with the same Oppo a half year ago. The Oppo is a great player you can get on the used market for as low as the $275 I paid.
I may give the 1200 to family.

I have had this player from the start and updated all along. Recently I have run into blu rays from netflix that wont play. I have usually just sent them back and gotten the dvd version. PIA...

So my question is:

Is it time to move on? i.e. the new 150 dollar players from sony etc. should play everything? Will I have same issues now and then in playing blu rays with the new 2012 generation players?

Throgh all its troubles this player still played most discs but I think it might be time.
