Blu-ray Players > Would you dump your PS3 for a $250 standalone?

I would trade it for a stand-alone. Mine is pretty loud also when the fan turns on high. Very annoying. I have Motorstorm, but probably won't buy many other games for it. I am just waiting for a combo player that does everything in both formats.

Simple answer...no. I have been pleasantly surprised by it and I enjoy the occasional game.

No, PS3 is a great machine. Its build quality, array of features and quality of playback make it a true keeper. I will purchase a dedicated Blu-Ray player for the HT in the basement (not necesserily a cheap one either), but PS3 has won a permanent stay in my family room setup.
JimSD's Avatar JimSD 02:38 PM 06-04-2007
Nope. We bought the PS3 for all its features, not just Blu-Ray playback. I figure we paid $300 for a Blu-Ray player and $300 for a next-gen game console - it's been a great value so far.

Nope. I am enjoying all my Blu-ray movies and my 3 games that I own and the quality of SACD playback rivals many higher end SACD players.
Its not really loud. I can hear the fan if I mute my movie but if the movie is on even regular volume, away goes the fan noise.
So no, i'm not going to spend even $200 on a player that does exactly what my ps3 does.

I am shocked to see so many people complaining about the fan noise of their PS3s....mine is damn near silent in operation. I don't know if their units are on the verge of breaking or what, but I cannot hear my PS3 running unless I am literally putting my ears to its position on my rack....

Loud PS3's are not the norm from all I've read as well as polls taken at AVS. Mine is like yours, dead silent. Only 14% of 683 votes so far.. You don't want to see the results of the xbox 360 poll

$250 standalone for movies versus $600 PS3 for movies which also has an extremely limited game collection? No contest, I'd buy that stand alone.
stockwiz's Avatar stockwiz 04:05 PM 06-04-2007
no.. my plan all along was to wait and buy a PS3 when the number of games increased and the price decreased and become format neutral and have a good gaming system to boot, and that plan still stands.

A little tip for all you remote bumpers which jumps your movies scene around from chapter to chapter. Although I'm sure most everyone has figured this out.

During the opening Title sequences hold down the PS button and turn the remote off. Now a simple bump won't cause the chapter to change or the FF and RR functions to kick in.

same here, I didn't even know he had a PS3. Well there are a few here that I've noticed bashing the PS3 long before buying one then go on to buy one and continue to bash. Seems silly to me but whatever floats your boat in that little cave.

Yeah, I like having to go through that added action. Why didn't they think of programming such a thing into all of the other remote devices out there?

Yeah man I hear you. Remote lock out would be a nice feature. I could actually set the remote's down on the table on a Saturday and not have my 2 year old pick them up and proceed to turn off that super sporting event I was watching.

Nothing like chasing your kid down cause the last thing you saw on screen was "FUMBLE" and you have no clue what's happening cause it's now on the PBS documentary of covered bridges or some crap like that. Of course, he giggles the whole way down the hall thinking it's a game.

In a word, no. The PS3 is a fantastic machine and the build quality seems excellent. It does a ton of stuff beyond a traditional player and that's added value for me.

Plus, the PS3 seems pretty future proof and I'm not sure that hypothetical $250 standalone could keep up.

There is no way I would trade in the PS3. I am going to use it to heat my garage in the wintertime.

Personally, if a full featured (BD-J, DTS-HD MA....) Blu Ray player was available I would sell my PS3 in a heart beat.

Went with the PS3 not so much because of the price point but for the fact that it was completely updateable while the current standalones are not.
JE3146's Avatar JE3146 12:04 PM 06-05-2007
I'd buy a standalone to complement the PS3. No way I'd sell my PS3.

Though, I would rather have a standalone BD player than use the PS3 as a BD player.
Malcolm_B's Avatar Malcolm_B 12:05 PM 06-05-2007
No, because with so few games I want to play so far I need to get my moneys worth outta the PS3 first before even thinking about getting a stand-alone.

I figured it more like 400$ on a console (same as my 360), and 200$ on a BD player.

I wanted both and got both at a great price

I sold my PS3 a couple months ago and bought the Philips Blu-ray player for less than $400 shipped. My reasons included:

IR control via Harmony 880 (I know the PS3 had a workaround, but it wasn't full function)

Analog audio out on standalone

I didn't like using a gaming machine as my Blu-ray player (didn't play games much anyway)

I couldn't tell any difference in picture quality between the two. I am very happy with my Blu-ray player. I may regret my decision when:

The PS3 can decode DTS-HD

The PSN offers lots of movie downloads

Otherwise, I am very happy with my player. The Philips BD player does a good job IMO. And it is cheap if you look around.

No, but I would buy a 250.00 standalone for another room.
