I am assuming that the PS3 outputs the uncompressed PCM 5.1 signal out of its HDMI output (correct?), but how does it handle Dolby TrueHD? Is there a DTHD 5.1 decoder built-in the machine or does it feed the DTHD raw bitstream out HDMI to be processed in a receiver (like the Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD MA equipped Onkyo TX-SR805)?

Currently PS3 does not pass through any of the advanced codecs. If internally decodes Dolby True HD (confirmed using Legends of Jazz Bluray) and sends it out as 5.1 PCM through HDMI.

BD/DVD HDMI setting -> Bitstream Linear PCM
Source format
|
v
Dolby Digital DD PCM
DTS DTS PCM
DTS-HD (including MA) DTS core PCM (from DTS core)
Dolby TrueHD PCM PCM
PCM PCM PCM

In addition to this, SACDs outputs are always PCM, no DSD bitstream out

So, just to make sure I'm clear, the PS3 outputs already-decoded DTHD, DTS-HD (core) and PCM 5.1 signals via HDMI and the receiver will simply amplify the signals?

My previous message was all garbled. The PS3 does not output any advanced codec as bitstream (even if you set the output as bitstream under BD/DVD settings).

So, Dolby TrueHD and SACD are sent out as PCM regardless of whether the setting is bitstream or LPCM.

However, normal codecs such as dolby digital, dts, dts-hd (core) are sent as raw bitstream (for outboard decoding) if you set the output to bistream and they are sent as LPCM if you set the output as LPCM.

Your receiver will either decode the dd or dts bitstream or the PCM. PCM still has to be converted to analog before being amplified. Your receiver needs to support multi channel pcm through HDMI for this. DTS and DD bitstreams can come through HDMI or even through coax/optical.
