Has anyone contacted Sony to find out IF/WHEN a firmware update will provide DD THD? If both the S1 and S300 have the same f/w version 2.0 then why wouldn't Sony claim DD THD on the S300?? Makes no sense.

Just got here from Amazon. The box is full of CAVEATS. Not a good sign.

Mine are 7 ft high and contain a multiplicity of 15" woofers. Small settig is not what I want to use.

Completely understand....maybe its just the interaction with my receiver? Not sure, but hopefully someone else can comment. Maybe someone with the Onkyo 604 or 605?

It was very bad static in Casino Royale...I changed back and it was still there.

Check the cover of your box. It warns you about several things that the BDP 300 will not do. Take a look. I am not near the box now.

Don't have one yet. I just want to know if the S300 will support DD THD like the S1 is supposed to with the f/w 2.0 (and from what others report the S300 has the same f/w version).

I just completed a chat with Sony support. I asked if the new S300 with the 2.0 f/w supported DD THD. Here's a portion of the conversion:

Danny.> I am glad to inform that your Sony unit supports Dolby TrueHD.

Danny.> Is there anything else that I may assist you with today?

Me> So just to be clear the new S300 does support Dolby TrueHD?

Danny.> Yes, You are correct.

So maybe we need to do more testing???

I had a chance to peek inside a S300 today and found out a few interesting things. It had the Sigma SMP8634LF processing chip and unfortunately it was revision A. The other interesting thing is next to the HDMI socket on the circuit board was a Sil 9030 CTU-7. This is a 1080p capable chip but it is only HDMI version 1.0 not the 1.3 version Sil9134 that I would have expected. Unless the Sigma chip has some kind of HDMI 1.3 capability built into the chip then it looks like the advanced audio capability using bitstream is a no go. Don't hold me to that as I am no electronics engineer(kjack jump in if you care to ) The audio board had 3 BurrBrown PCM 1791 chips installed so the audio should be good.

It looks to me as though the S300 is really very similar to the BDP-S1 but at a somewhat better price point. Is it any better? Probably not. Please don't shoot the messenger.

Damn. Not want I wanted to hear. Having the new Onkyo 805 and its capability to decode HD audio formats will mean nothing. Is there any BD player doing HDMI 1.3?

ps3. it converts TrueHD into PCM and sends it over hdmi. i believe s300 does the same. your receiver will display Multi Channel PCM even when TrueHD track is playing.

Thanks but it won't do bitstream for the HD codecs. Is the PS3 confirmed HDMI 1.3?

i don't think it ever will since TrueHD to PCM is a digital to digital conversion so it does not require DAC's, all D/A is still done on the receiver. This way it can sync video and audio and do all the interactive features. If you need/desire dsp processing your receiver needs to be THX Ultra 2 certified, i.e. apply dsp to pcm and not the bitstream.

Yep you're probably right until more AVS support HD decoding. What's more disturbing is the post above about the chips inside the S300. Guess we won't see the newer java 1.1 profile on this or the S1.

Does anyone know if these chips are the same for the Panny 10A? I am still trying to decide between the two and was wondering if the Panny has any chance in hell of being update to the new profile 1.1

Thanks Clark. Rev A is a real disappointment. Looks like this won't be Sony's first 1.1 capable machine.

I just bought this player. Which video output setting are you using? I want the 1080p/24, but is sourcedirect or auto the better of the two for the hdmi video output? Any opinions would be helpful.

Hi,

Is this player as loud as, or quieter, than the PS3?

Deep color is not listed in the manual.

And this player definitely does not have HDMI 1.3.

Clark,

Thanks for putting this issue to bed....again (I thought I had put it to bed a while back, but people don't like to listen to things they don't want to hear).

Just out of curiosity, do you remember if the line under the SMP8634LF silkscreen read "0623 REV A CO"? I've got a bet with someone...

It was 0713 Rev A without the CO after it. Do you have any idea what the difference is between the two? If you win the bet do I get a cut?

Interesting....hmmmm...

So now we have the SMP8634LF with new ID/model/Revision on the Sony S300 instead of the older model that found on current BR-player.

Are we 100% certain that this model is not hdmi 1.3? All of the dealer info I've seen lists hdmi 1.3. This is pretty interesting, time to do a little digging.

Sony's website lists support for x.v.Color, isn't hdmi 1.3 required for this?

Here is a good review:
http://www.hometheaterblog.com/homet...dps300_bl.html

I ordered this player last night from Sonystyle.com, but I am a little worried about the load times, especially for discs like Pirates 1 & 2. Is this something that will be fixed via firmware updates? Also, is Sony pretty quick in regards to mailing update CDs?

I just spoke to a Sony rep and Nathaniel at Sony Level II tech support. Both were unable to tell me the hdmi version and both confirmed that the BD-PS300 only supports TrueHD and DTS-HD by sending the 5.1 core and does not decode it (which I already knew). I'm still not satisfied with the hdmi version answer, going dig deeper still.

Guess you were right about "support" vs "decode" on the TrueHD issue. This matches what the matrix in the manual says.
