thanks joe and DrPyro for the timings. Looks like very quick for "simple" BRs and abt slightly over 1 mins for POTC kind of fanciful titles. Very good indeed.

How abt the menu system and controls ? Is there any improvement over the HD1 ?

Can it resume from the last disk position of a BR and/or DVD ?

thanks again

Times for Bluray:
#1: Drive close to Pioneer Loading Logo
#2: Logo to FBI warning
Phanton of the Opera: 20s/10s
The Transporter: 15s/15s

#1: Drive close to Pioneer Loading Logo
#2: Logo to Coin
#3: Coin to Disney Logo

PotC-CofBP: 20s/1m15s/45s
PotC-DMC: 20s/40s/35s

Maybe I'm dumb, but I'm confused. Are the POTC times cumulative (75 to coin) or supplementary (20+75 to coin)? Then additional 45" to Disney logo or are you watching previews or what? And then 60" for SD DVD?

I have the $ for this player, but the times seem a bit on the slow side. My XA2 loads SD faster, in the 30-40 sec range. I know that POTC are JAVA heavy titles, so I expect longer loads on those but was just wondering...

The POTC titles are longest loading titles I have ever owned! But once you see their cool talking skeleton MENU it is worth it... The MENU system is quicker to navigate thru and the response time is also faster than the HD1... If you had a day (most probably a hour) with each unit you would take the 94HD without hesitation...

The times for all of the DVDs & Bluray disks are, as you put it, "supplementary". So in order to calculate the time to "load" the disk, simply add all of the numbers together. None of these times include "previews" and other "garbage", i simply stoped timing when I saw the first information stored on the disk. This content varied between disks, from a disney logo, to a FBI warning, etc... Some of these disks have UPO (user prohibitied operations) so you can't skip previews etc, so the time it would take to actually start seeing the movie could vary ALOT and is not a fair assesment of a speed of a player.

For the DVD, that time is from Power On. For the BluRay times, the unit was already powered on and i started timing from the inserting of the disk drive. It does take a "considerable" time for the 94HD to "Power On", i would guess it around 20+ seconds to reach a point where you could load a disk.

Frankly, from an operation standpoint, from me inserting the disk and walking around the coffee table to sit my lazy a** on the sofa, I start to see the pioneer logo and usually the first disk information shortly there after. The only "bothersome" title has been PotC, which took quite a long time at the spining key/coin.

oh, that would be great - not that it would be a big deal either way... I was just curious if they sold that many in pre-orders, that I wasn't one of the first 2,500...

I haven't seen a recent post from Jeff Hagg @ The Pioneer Store as to when they were going to ship Ghost Rider & Superman. However, he did indicate that they would be shipping them to us. I don't know how many Jeff sold, but considering he is the only place that currently has a significant number if he has sold over 2500, he must be salesman of the Week, Month, year!

I am looking at this player. I already have a pioneer DV-79avi which I enjoy the DVD upscaling on. I don't have the room for 2 players, will the 94HD upscale standard DVD's? If it does how is the quality?

dbass9-

Yes, Over HDMI the 94HD will upscale std. DVDs to 720p & 1080i, and i think it will output 480i and 480p, it will not upscale to 1080p24Hz. As for quality, I really have no comparison to say good or bad things about upscaling ability.

Robert-

I don't have any PAL disks to test, sorry.

Yes good job Pioneer - CD playback by the 2nd generation of products. Bravo.

Now when can we expect a Flagship receiver to go with it.

I think you mean Flagship receiver and Player. The LX70 (European name for 94HD) does not have ILink but the rumoured upcoming LX90 flagship probably will.

There are still quite a few who want ILink, lets hope Pioneer provides.

Just got off the phone with Pioneer support again. Apparently they expect to have a firmware solution for the Anthem D2 HDMI handshake issue in about a week. Hopefully they will be able to stick to that timeframe and it will work!

Shlitzie,

That's great news man! Thanks for keeping us up to date...I've been working so much this week, I haven't been able to check in with Pio on my original report to Chris Walker and the Support team as well. Good to know things are moving ahead.

In the meantime, the Tolstoi workaround continues to work like a champ!

Hey, joerod, good to see we got our own thread man! It makes all the sense in the world, and will help new owners and old much better this way.

I'm lifting a beer for us all right now...

Cheers guys,
Brian

I assume this will work for the HD1 too? The problem with the HDMI handshake between the Pioneer and Anthem began with the newest FW for the HD1 correct?

Oh, no worries man, I should have been more specific. I was one of 3 people to discover this problem initially (gostan and Tolstoi being the other 2), and I reported it to Pioneer Support right away. I have a case open, and they lied when they told someone that there were "no problems" (I heard this in an earlier post). They know darn well that I am having this problem, and they have my phone number, email, etc. to contact when they fix it. I'm sure we'll see a visit from Walkamo (Chris Walker from Pioneer) in this thread when they have an update for us as well. Their Support department has heard of this issue from at least 3 of us, and I'm sure a few more by this point.

The D2 and 94HD are meanwhile playing very nice together, using the Tolstoi workaround which is fairly easy to do. Of course, a permanent solution will be very welcome! I can't wait to get my 2 movies from Mr. Hagg at the Pio Store, still waiting for those. In the meantime, I find the Legends of Jazz disc with TrueHD to be an amazing showcase of the D2/94HD combo...my neighbors are surely tired of it, but this one grows on me more and more every day! Can't wait for more concert video's like this with TrueHD.

Cheers all,
Brian

hey, a couple of quick questions for those that own players, or those that now where i can find the answers:

1. does anyone know which scaler the 94 is using? it would be silly if players like the samsung 1200 and toshiba xa2 would include a high quality realta chip and sell for 25% less than an "elite" player, no?

2. is the 1080p output straight from the disc? or is it down converted to 1080i then rescaled to 1080p like the new supposedly "1080p" toshiba a20?

thanks in advance

Dr. Pyro,

Good to hear from you. We shipped out Ghost Rider and Superman to everyone that ordered from us yesterday, via FEDEX EXPRESS SAVER. They should hit everyone in a few days. If by next week you have not received your copy of the movies, please contact the store. (714) 540-8000.

We always appreciate the interest from our AVS Forum member/partners and look forward to strengthening the relationship over more new product down the road.

P.S. Our current stock now have the movies included if anyone needs one for the guest room

1. Not sure what chip it is using...I don't upscale in the player at all, so I haven't cared to find out. I send 480i over HDMI for standard DVD's, and I use the "SourceDirect" setting for the BluRay viewing. In most cases, that ends up sending 1080p/24, for instance for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, to my Anthem D2 for processing by its own Gennum VXP scaler.

2. Yes, the 1080p is absolutely straight from the disk if one chooses "SourceDirect" as the video output. There is no processing whatsoever done to that signal before being sent out HDMI. You can also manually choose a particular resolution (480i,480p,720p,1080i,1080p [60 or 24]), etc. In my case, I simply leave it on "SourceDirect" and let the D2 do all the heavy lifting.

HTH,
Brian

Jeff-
Excellent information....Thanks for everything!!

Krobar-
If in ILink, you mean Firewire/IEEE-1394. No, it does not have this connection. The current trend is to transfer digital info via HDMI or the older TOSLINK or coax digital.

Joerod-
