It appears a massive PS3 price drop is on the way.

http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/05/p...-circuit-city/

It appears the price will drop to $499 and include 5 blu-ray movies as well. Should see a significant bounce in PS3 sales I would think, plus a lot of people getting their appetite wet for high-def movies. Anybody considering a high-def movie player of some sort, would have to seriously consider just getting the PS3 at these prices.

It's not an official price drop from the looks of the CC ad, more like a $100 instant rebate

The links posted by innerloop in the news thread suggest quite clearly that this is a permanent retail-wide price reduction at the occasion of E3. PS3 + 5 movies at $499.

The link suggests it is just a promotion

"The promotion runs from July 15th to the 21st, and there's no word if that price drop will stick, if it has Sony's blessing, or if will get expanded to other retailers, but we'll all hope for the best."

Although when you're losing $240 on a console that's not selling why not lose $340? Good news for people who want a PS3.

Here's a link with a confirmation (from newnameguy)

http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=16721

As it turns out, a merchandising manager (who wished to remain anonymous) at one of the world's biggest retailers has confirmed to GameDaily BIZ that the price drop is indeed retail-wide and it's scheduled to take place on July 12, although the first wave of ads to promote the PS3's new price won't kick in until Sunday, July 15.

oh a different link, ok. Well the PS3 needs it and good for Sony, but is it too little too late?

Good news for HD though: lower PS3 prices means higher adoption rates which will force Toshiba to lower the A2 price even further to keep up.
(Actually, the promised MSRP reduction on the A2 does not seem to have been pushed through in retail?)

I've read that some analysts have announced that a $100 price drop is definately "too little too late".

Ok sure, they have reduced the loss from $240 to $140... now it is back up to $240 loss per console. There have been no new numbers, but it has been 8 months.. either way you can't disagree that this will keep the consoles in the red.

Sony is breaking even at $499 right now. Microsoft is now making a profit on the 360. So they can lower it as well.

No animals were harmed in the creation of this sentence.

The $1000 to $500 price drop for a BD player is a good little sign.

To quote Bill Lumbergh: "Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"

So they dropped the Emotion engine on European consoles and indicate they're reducing manufacturing costs on the Cell, but I really doubt they've reached the Black by now, but as ckong said, do you have any links or docs indicating so?

A $100 off is very good, and may move more units, but like I felt with the Toshiba free HD-DVD promo, the free movie offering selection is like picking the prettiest turd in the latrine.

Heresay from people at Beyond3d. They were losing $280 per console in Nov 06. It's not a stretch that they rectified that gap right now.

I doubt either is true.

Microsoft recently had to extend the warranty on the 360 due to the extremely high failure rate, to the tune of $1 billion.

Yeah because comparing some type of Cell Phone to a High Definition movie player is a definite oranges-oranges comparison

Honestly though... who would want an iPhone? I've never been a big phone person though. I have got to be the last person in the U.S. who doesn't have a camera on their cell phone.

For the video game half, maybe. For the movie half, notsomuch. (IMHO)

Some people like to complain about BluRay. I just like to watch movies in HD. I'm funny like that.

still too high.

$100 drop on a $600 game machine is not "massive"

lack of IR remote is a real killer plus the clunky-ness factor for living rooms that don't want gaming.

even as a game machine PS3 is getting panned so get it to $350 then lets talk some more.

DVD's are about movies & people watch them in living rooms, how many people actually use their computer drives to sit and watch movies- Bluray's Andy Parsons

There is nothing factual to back this comment up with. I use the PS3 as a BD player only. If and when someone produces a Universal player that also allows external decoding of tru hd and dts ma I will buy it and lose the PS3.

I might buy in with this price and package. I'll likely sell some of the free BDs though. The irony is that I doubt a CC will have any PS3s in stock the week of sale. Hopefully it is not a pain in the ass to get one during the week of this deal. With stock shortages already existing in some areas and demand up for the advertisement/price break - if I have to wait through long lines or search to find a CC that actually has one, I'm gonna get nauseous/violent.
