Would you 1400 owners recommend this player to someone as a lower-end model or would you recommend the Sony S300 instead???

I would, even tough the Sony might be a little bit more stable. The Sony is lacking to many feature for it to be priced around $399.00. With the 1400 at least you get TrueHD and DTS-HD-HR decoding and it bitstreams all audio codecs plus the player is a little bit faster than Sony's from what I hear.

Hello fjerina,

I have owned both of these players and the 1400 is much, much better choice than the Sony 300. For a profile 1.0 player, the 1400 is the BEST!

Yes, we could all just be lazy and direct him to the Onkyo thread or be a little kind and give them the info they need in this thread.
One post to answer/ask a question does not kill a thread.

Thanks for being an asset to AVS.

I guess when questions are asked about the 1400, and they go unanswered, but a dozen Onkyo questions get answered right away, you have to wonder.

Is it US being lazy by not answering a question and directing them to the right thread OR are THEY being lazy by not looking in the first place??

So if I have any question, no matter what it is I'll just ask it in this thread then!! Gotcha!!
And Thank You for your informative post!!

It is too bad our favorite refurb site does not have the 1400 in stock or expect to have any available any time soon.

does this bitstream bomb happen when the codecs are processed in the player before being sent to the receiver - reason I am asking as I am interested in the panny DMP-bd50

The BD50 also offers next generation sound capabilities using integrated decoders for lossless Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

Not trying to hurt thread just wondering if integrated decoding will solve the boom problem with the ONKYO receivers.

Still love the 1400 and will be keeping it as I have room now for a FPTV projector.

The DTS bomb happens generally with certain Onkyo, Marantz?, Integra, an Yamaha receivers. It is done when you set the 1400 to "Bitstream" audio and let one of these receivers decode the DTS-HD Master Audio track. Only a few titles have been confirmed to produce this phenom.

Yes letting the 1400 decode the DTS MA core will bypass this event. I am testing Dan in Real Life to see if the 5.1 PCM track will produce the loud pop. It shouldn't, but I will report later on.

I haven't had the "bomb" watching DTS-MA with my pio elite receiver. Have I just been lucky or is it just the make of receivers you listed.

I don't think the Pio receiver has the faulty TI chip that causes the bomb.

As always thanks for the great info. I was just paranoid about blowing my speakers. Like I said I have listened to a bunch of the DTS-MA discs without any problem, but it never hurts to ask.

If you are experiencing problems loading the boomoo Dan in Real Life with your 1400, then just simply switch the digitial audio out from "Bitstream" to "PCM". I just spent the last 30 minutes monkeying around trying to load this damn movie.

Now I switch it back to bitstream and it loads. Go figure! Well, let this be a lesson to some of y'all having loading problems with the 1400. Think like an 8^ Sammy design engineer and you can get the 1400 working in any condition.

yes I went through 30 minutes of wiping the disc, turning the damn thing off and on, play all the previews. It took a simple change in settings to do the trick. Damn you Sammy!

Aside from the initial load BS, Dan in Real Life is actually a good boomoo. No video or audio problem when it was playing. The musical scenes (w/ 5.1 PCM)were lively and moving. Good HD picture also. A keeper.

Loading Time Info:

34 seconds to the select your language screen
13 seconds to the Touchstone logo screen and 1st preview
27 seconds (immediate hit main menu button on remote) to the cop and station wagon loading screen
68 seconds to the main menu screen
---
2:22 seconds total loading time (double checked the math )

On FW 1.7 @1080p/24 fps Off - Bitstream and PCM audio.

Do you guys think there is any possibility that Samsung will, or can release a FW update that enables this player to decode DTS- HD MA?? It seems to me that if possible, would be a great way to compete with the PS3 and panny 50. Maybe even offer it for a small price, hell I'd pay 30-50 bucks to upgrade my 1400 to DTS-HDMA compatable. Well I'm just thinking out loud, what do you guys think????

No going to happen and just in case, no profile 1.1 update either. Forget about BD-Live/Profile 2.0.

Not gonna happen. That is why they make new models every year. If you want the best features, then you pay full price for a new player. That's just how it works.

jusolson, don't mind these guys. they're too pessimistic for their own good. Ol' Barney is still keeping hope alive and the 1400 will go pro 1.1.

As far as DTS-MA decoding is concern, the 1400 engine, Sigma Design SMP-8634 Rev C is not capable of decoding MA, just DTS-HR.

Sorry to come in late, just buying a used one of these. Noticed hte Secrets review mentions an issue with 24p playback (studdering), has this been fixed with firmware updates?

Also, is the viewing of standard DVD's really that bad as mentioned in that review?

Haven't heard any recent problems with the 24 fps stuttering lately.

The reviews pertaining to the upscaling ability of the 1400 varies. For me it good enough. It is clearly 1080p. But if you have something like Smarty-pant's high speed Oppo upscaler, then it is academic as to who is the better processor. If the 1400 is the only upscaler in your setup, it is good enough.

I always knew the chip was capable of of BD-Bonus/Live features but Samsung has not announced any plans to turn it on like they did with the 5000 (which owners are still waiting, 6 months after release date) and 1500. With the 1500 now hitting store there is less chance of they do it now. Also remember that the Sigma chip needs external hardware for BD-Bonus/Live features to work (ie. 1G of persistent memory for BD-Live) which the 1400 may or may not have As always I do not recommend people buy this player HOPING for a BD-Bonus/BD-Live upgrade UNLESS it has been OFFICIALLY reported by SAMSUNG. Is not good to give people false hope.
