I just received a retirement gift of a new BD-P1400 Friday and it appears to me that the black level is very low. Is this typical, in general, of a HD Dvd player? Everythng except the deep dark scenes look great. The apparent low black level applies to both HD & SD DVDs.

I have an older version of DVE, but before I start messing around with my ISF settings, I just want make sure that the low black levels are not normal.

Background information: I have an ISF Calibrated Samsung HL-S6188 and I just swiched the P1400 into the same input as my Oppo player, which was looking very good. All other video sources look fine, so if I really have a problem, it is only with this player.

Thanks very much for any comments.

I have a SONY Grand Wega KDF-60XS955 TV and a 3 year old Pioneer Elite DVD player and Pioneer Elite receiver (VSX-56txi). I want to buy a high quality Blu-ray DVD player and was going to buy the Samsung 1200 until I read this this thread. Should I buy the 1400 instead or wait and buy the 2400 given that I dont have a CURRENT high quality receiver (yet)?
I'll go with the major recommendation you guys suggest...

Personally I would probably get the 1400 over the 1200 unless you can get a really good deal on it.

I have a Hitachi 55HDM71 and it can handle 720p but only 1080i. Will the PQ of the BDP1400 be lessened to any extent?? I was seriously considering buying a 1400 but am now uncertain as to what to do. The reviews are great for 1080p but perhaps the 1080i are not.

Thanks,

Bill

1080i is plenty good. Yourself along with most people are likely not to notice the difference between 1080i and 1080P anyways.

Is there a way to set the 1400 (or any BR player) to NOT upconvert while viewing SD? My panasonic is 1024x720, so the TV does it's thing to the signal like-it-or-not... and I'd rather send a straight 480i via HDMI for SD (just like those with expensive scalers). And truth be told, the Panny scaler is pretty good.

So, can one set seperate resolution depending on format?

I'm pretty sure Sony's BDp-S300 allows you to do that.

Page 46 of the manual shows a "Source Direct" setting that outputs the same resolution and frame rate recorded on the disc.

2)Is it a good Player???
3)Does the Picture look amazing??
4)Is the sound good??
I don't want to give my parents a peace of samsung BRP 1400 junk but i would feel odd giving them a ps3

"Source Direct" wouldn't help for 1080p... my Sammy only accepts up to 1080i? Would "Source Direct" output 1080i on 1080p material?

I have had my 1400 for a week now (connected to a Samsung HL-S6188 and a Denon AV-3300) and here are my comments:

1. Does not seem too bad, but I have nothing to compare it to other than a standard DVD player. Does not take as long to load as I had suspected based on what others have written about HD players in general.

2. Seems good to me, but again no experience with any other HD-type player. Everything has worked fine so far.

3. Yes

4. Yes, the audio is great, but since I have a 5-6 year old receiver, I am using the 6.1 analog ouputs from the 1400 to drive the analog inputs of my AVR. This allows me to use all the audio formats supported by the 1400. I have been using uncompressed PCM for all the Blu-ray movies I have watched so far.

Slingbox,

Is there a variable crossover, or is it set to 100Hz like the 1200? Also, in the speaker setup limited to None/Small/Large, or does it have distance settings? Thanx!

EDIT: never mind. I just downloaded the manual and saw that both the bass management and speaker setup is still crippled.... hopefully they will fix this for the 2400 (and hence the 5000)...

Peace... Vader

I have HD DVD A2 and I am considering adding a BR player. The BDP1400 seems to be the best pick when balancing performance and price.

The biggest complaint I have with the HD DVD A2 is an issue they have concerning the use of HDMI>DVI that the firmware updates don't help... at least not in my case. My HD picture is no better to me than the Upconverted SD PQ.

I had to run the HDMI>DVI connection direct to my Hitachi 55HDM71 since running it through my Denon receiver was not compatible and it would output nothing higher than a 740p signal.

Does anyone know if it works to use the Denon VR 887 as a switching device by running HDMI>DVI from the BDP1400 through the receiver to the display?

Is PQ of HD good with the 1400 with HDMI>DVI connection even if run direct to the display? In my case with an A2 it is no better than SD with 1080I conversion.

Thanks,

Bill

On the Net the lowest price I could find is $435 from Vanns for both the BDP1400 and the Sony BDP S300 (with 5 free DVDson either).

Any opinions on which is the best player? Anyone know of a better deal?

Thanks,

Bill

When you say that the sammy is much better than the sony was this based on a side by side comparison of the video and audio quality of both Blu Ray and upconverted DVDs??

Side be side...no but I did own the Sony for 2 weeks before taking it back to get the sammy 1200 then upgrading to PS3 which is pretty darn sweet.
The load time is much faster with 1400 and no chapter skip unlike the Sony.

It says for units purchased before 9/31. So I imagine you qualify. Go to Amazon and search BD-P1200. You should see the link for the PDF/Rebate form.

Thanks,

Thanks. Found the form but it only lists the 1200. Is there an official Blu-Ray site for anymore info or an updated form?

Thanks again.

I chased this ghost last week with no luck. I even went to best Buy and they they tried several different web sites and could not find any free DVD applications for the P1400. I guess this product is too new.

It may very well work. You might try calling these people (Vanns). On their page for the Sony it also says in small print, top center of this page, any BR DVD player until 9/30/07.

http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...ures/487019177

Is $435 a good price?? Maybe I won't wait if the 5 dvds come with it.
Let me know what Vanns says. They do say

"Get 5 FREE Blu Ray Movies With Purchase!

Get 5 FREE Blu Ray movies when you purchase any Blu Ray player between 7/1/07 through 9/30/07!
Click Here For Rebate Form (PDF)

Promotion Ends 09/30/2007

Says it adds bitstream out over 1.3 for all audio codes.

So who is gonna be the first to test it out and review DTS-MA?
