BOO!! HISS!!

It would seem, that with Panasonic bringing out the Profile 2.0 BD50 soon, Sony bringing out a 2.0 (or compatible with 2.0??) this summer and Pioneer Elite bringing out a 2.0 this fall, that a medium to higher-ended brand like Marantz would also bring out a BD player that could at least be firmware upgradeable to 2.0 YMMV. This turn of events disappoints me and eliminated this BD player from my short list real fast (realizing my lack of its purchase does not count in the entire scheme of things for Marantz or D&M Holdings).

No 2.0? I see that as a plus...... except what differentiates it from the 3800?

There are more than a handful of [op amps] that sound so good that most designers want to be using them as opposed to discreet transistors. Dave Reich, Theta 2009

Why would a lack of Profile 2.0 be a "plus"? Just curious..

I'm sure every customer counts. What you're seeing is most likely them developing the unit they started on over a year ago and have at least put the car into it for being 1.1. I'm sure their next offering will be 2.0. Some companies work faster, some work slower. I'm still going to take this unit home to play with it and I may just keep it!

Do you have this player?

2.0 is a conduit for spam and more ads / crap.

True. But a conduit for a firmware upgrade is more like the functionality I need. Otherwise "disconnect" ...

I spoke with Marantz late this afternoon, the BD8002 will be out in May but no street date could be given. Also told no other model will be coming out later in the year.

Hmm. This could mean that they are working on their next-gen Blu-Ray player and might showcase this player at CES2009. I'm willing to wait as there's no rush from my side to jump into hi-def at the moment. Arcam are also working on a Blu-Ray player, so that will bear close watch.

Consider all the MC12 owners from the last few years or owners of other high end processors that require the analog outputs - this is the likely market segment.

I will grab one. If not to tinker with and review. Should be an excellent player.

Not me! I really wanted to get this player but the way the economy is right now I'm gonna wait. My BD30 will serve me fine for now.

I'll grab one when they're out. But I'm working on trying to get one early to review it. I may just take a trip to Marantz. We'll see.

Just wondering, if i were to get a new surround processor with the latest connectivity, the analog outputs would not be needed for Dolby TrueHD or DTS-MA. From an audio perspective, what features or enhancements does the Marantz have that would give it the edge in audio over the Denon 3800?

If you buy a new generation pre-pro/receiver, you'll only need the 2500 for a grand. Anyway, from what I am reading I think I'll stick with my PS3 until there is a player out there that is firmware upgradable, can bitstream the latest CODEC's and can survive a thread in this forum without being trashed.

Sounds like the BD50 should fit the bill. That's what I'm going to get to replace my BD30. The PS3 no longer fills my needs.

but the 2500 does not have the Realta HQV ? the vid quality on th 3500 would be much better ??? i have the AVR 8002 which i would use for audio over the 3800 or the 8002BD which ever i decide to go with...

I`am assuming that the unit is not 2.0 upgradeable ?

I hear rumors that Sony in the next 2 yrs with their new copy protection, that if your player is does not have internet connectivity meaning (BDlive). Which will check each disk & player to see if its been tampered with. Which will authorize the the disk to play or not ? And with that being encoded on the newer movies coming out they wont play on any older machines because you don't have BDlive.
Maybe be best for people to wait for 2.0 players...

Any one else hear this ?

Hear are some new features released on some of the newer disks, that only work with BDlive.

Copper chassis and toroidal power supply in the SR8002 allows for more headroom in dynamic range so you hear more frequency in your music and move soundtracks. It adds more cost and one could argue the individual additions of these, but added together they generally have better build quality and the performance is helped.

For people who would use it with an HDMI 1.3 processor, this would mean nothing, and would mean more of a marketing gimmick then a solid engeneering principle in the first place, but whatever sells products these days, I guess.

The SR8002 is a receiver and yes, it does make a difference. Toroidal power supplies provide ultra-quiet performance. They minimize stray electromagnetic radiation and minimize hum and noise to your speakers.

hey at least you guys can afford houses. In australia where I live, housing affordability is screwed! Some places have gone up hundreds of % in "value/cost" in the last few years. It's terrible.

How are you equating build quality to encodes passed through HDMI? It's not marketing, it's solid construction. Cattledog has it right.

Those of you who have emailed or PMd me about this unit, thanks look for an email soon from me.

Thanks, i didn't realise you guys talking about a receiver in BD player thread, so I didn't bother to look at the model number. My bad, however I stand by my comment regarding the power supply in any component. Of course at that price level pretty much everyone uses torodial power supply, so I'm not sure why this is so special in the Marantz.

Just saw that Marantz has posted some specs and pricing info on the new separates: the MM8003 Amp ($2,399) and the AV8003 Pre-Amp Processor ($2,599)--it looks like they are ready to post info on the BD8002 Blu-Ray as well.

www.us.marantz.com/Products/2290.asp

No info on availability noted.

The AV8003 looks promising - still surprised that there's still no mention of the BD8002 on their site though, especially considering the listing on Music Direct's site.

But when will this stuff hit the streets?

Connection question - do i connect the Dolby Digital coaxial output for older discs with just DTS or Dolby Digital 5.1 or will these formats play correctly just using the 5.1 analog outputs from the Marantz?
