Well, it didn't take long to go format neutral after hanging around here for a while. After having my XA2 HD DVD player for less than a month, I picked up a Samsung BDP-1400 last night and finally got to play Casino Royale in HD. Not only was the picture fantastic, but the sound from the uncompressed PCM soundtrack (through Pioneer VSX-92) was the best I have heard yet from any HD disc. The player did freeze once during the movie, but immediately unfroze after I hit rewind. The rest of the movie was glitch-free and I'm hoping for the best. My strategy will now be mostly renting HD movies and only buying a few favorites until prices come down and/or a winner begins to emerge. Until that happens, I'm yet another who can ignore the war and enjoy movies in HD.

Congratulations on your neutrality. I too am format neutral. Got my XA2 about a month ago. Love it, especially the PQ of standard DVD's and the HD-DVD's look incredible on my 56" 1080p JVC HD-ILA.

I also am expecting a Samsung BD-P1400 soon. Can't wait, FF Silversurfer and Halloween are sitting at home waiting to be played.

I get my equipment through a small local dealer so I don't have to deal with the headaches of a big box store.

Better prices and far better support.

Best part about being neutral...we can watch all the HD movies....sweet

Congrats. Sounds like a good strategy too.

Thanks Richard

make Underworld your next rental if you thought the sound on Casino Royale was phenomenal. also the potc movies and apolcalypto are must-see's.

oh and don't forget to have the latest firmware, might solve any skipping/freezing issues.

Casino Royale and Halloween were the first two discs I bought. I'll be spinning Halloween later in the month. I'll give a more detailed report on the player after I've had it a while.

Watched Rocky Balboa last night. Another BD home run as far as I'm concerned. Whether or not you like the movie (and I did), the picture quality and especially the audio quality is superb. Great presentation of film grain to showcase the gritty streets of Philly. And the audio was really an immersive experience. So far, Blu Ray audio just sounds better to me than HD DVD audio. Another nice feature is that the extras on Rocky Balboa were in HD. Although I'm not heavily into bonus features, I definitely prefer them in HD--something HD DVD doesn't offer. While I'm happy to be format neutral, I can already see and hear some of the benefits of BD beyond exclusive titles.
