Yeah, I know, but "Dolby True HD" / "DTS MA" also shows up on my bro-in-laws TV, and he doesn't have his PS3 hooked up w/ HDMI and doesn't have an HD AVR.

In theory there shouldnt be any difference in sound quality but the simple fact is there has not been any blind testing with the PS3 yet to tell either way.

For those looking for a new PS3 Slim, I just picked one up at Best Buy. Looked like they just got them in stock today.

Amazon still says "In stock on August 28th". I had a ton of Best Buy gift cards I wanted to get rid of otherwise I would have waited for Amazon.

This has been discussed at length on AVS and other forums. The bottom line is that it really comes done to the capabilities of the AVR. If the AVR buffers and re-clocks the incoming LPCM data stream then applies identical processing to what it applies post-decoding for the bitstream input then they should sound identical. For some of the betters AVRs this appears to be the case. However, most lower cost AVRs (and even some more expensive models) do not do the buffering/re-clocking of the incoming LPCM (in order to keep costs down) and some do not apply identical post-decoding processing. In this latter case its really the fault of the AVR when an LPCM input produces an inferior sound quality as compared to a bitstream input.

I'm not ridiculing people.

I have been an early adopter of way too many products and technology.

I'm ridiculing SONY for calling this new product a SLIM.

At lest call it something more logical like PS3 v2 or something like that.

I OBJECT to the SLIM name. Not the people buying it.

This is a joke, right? So I suppose you also object to EXTRA STRENGTH Tylenol because you think that makes regular Tylenol UNDERDOSED? And you must also get hot under the collar by DIET Coke because you think that implies people who drink regular Coke are drinking Coke FAT?

The name PS3 Slim does not make or imply the old PS3 is the "PS3 Fat" except in your mind. The PS3 is still the PS3, period. The fact that you think the name PS3 Slim casts a negative implication on the PS3 is your issue, not Sony's, and I doubt it is shared by many people. I far prefer the name PS3 Slim, which is cute and catchy, to your cold and robotic "PS3 v2," a moniker that only a bureaucrat could love.

I don't think Sony is calling it that as they just said it is slimmer. It is the media and public giving it that label and you, you, you, its all your fault

If dolby digital or DTS on a sd-dvd is sent out LPCM via HDMI so its LPCM 5.1 is that then uncompressed or what is it?

PCM is not a compressed format. However what you are referring to is compressed audio data decoded to uncompressed PCM. The decoded audio is not improved just because it is now in uncompressed form.

I've updated Post #2 of this thread (i.e., the PS3 FAQ) to add a link to the new PS3 Slim thread, to clearly indicate this FAQ thread applies to both the full size and the new PS3 Slim models, and a few other minor corrections (typos).

Just installed Firmware 3.00

Looking forward to seeing if their are any changes to our current settings. I haven't looked over the changes yet but I thought I heard something about a new audio feature or something?

You're probably referring to the fact that you can output audio via HDMI & optical simultaneously now.

well for instance if someone has a second set in another room they want to play the video on at the same time. You can output Component/Optical and still get HD vid and 5.1 audio on that set too. Or if you have optical headphones (like the Astro A40's) you can output HDMI to your AVR/TV while at the same time running the optical out to your headphones.

HDMI + Optical, you could feed HDMI to the AVR and optical direct to the TV, for use by people in your household who just want to watch the disc without messing with surround sound.

HDMI + Analog, you could feed Zone 2 on the many AVRs that have this feature, nearly all of which require the Zone 2 source to be analog. Useful when using the PS3 as a music server.

Not clear to me is whether the PS3 is feeding multichannel audio via HDMI while simultaneously downmixing to 2-channel for analog.

Except there's no indication that it now supports simultaneous video output. Only audio. I would be hugely grateful if video was simultaneous analog/HDMI video was now supported.

I've updated Post #2, the PS3 FAQ, to indicate firmware 3.00 is now available for automatic download/installation and also that there is now a option under "sound settings" for "audio multi-output". Currently the ver. 3.00 firmware is available for download and automatic installation on internet connected PS3s, but not yet available for download to a PC for manual installation. The file for manual download is typically posted to the web a day or two after it becomes available for internet connected PS3s.
