I am confused. you stated it won't play mkv therefore making the ps3 a limited media center...the ps3 wont play mkv as a 'standalone' but WILL play them when streamed...you can't compare apples to oranges...unless I am missing something here...cheers.

If you have it hooked up to a NAS you will not be able to view mkv files!!!!
Steamed or not.
If it's connected to a USB drive, it can't play mkv files!!!
Steamed or not.
You need a second unit (a media center that actually is capable of reading the mkv file format) to actually "play" the files, "transcode" them for you.
I recently have brought alot of new tech for my room and most of which is new to me... I have brought a 32inch full HD LED TV and a PS3 with an Denon AVR-391 receiver plus SYS-391HT speaker pack. I have the PS3 connected to the receiver via HDMI and then HDMI output to my TV HDMI input.
Iv been reading this forum as its been my bible for the past few days, ive been trying to get best possible video + sound output from my PS3, I use it to watch Blu-rays and DVDs aswell, One thing im still confused about... is it best to have the "BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI) " set to Bilstream or Linear PCM? Also I might add, my PS3 is a recent Slim model with latest firmware. Is it better to go Bilsteam and Let my AVR handle the sound decoding etc ?? Also when i go to sound options and set "Automatic" via HDMI on my AVR it displays "M IN 7.1 " when in fact my set up is only 5.1 how would I go about fixing this ? or doesn't it matter ? I just dont want to be loosing any sound seeing as I dont have 7.1
Also I have been experimenting with the "manual" option with the HDMI sound options on the PS3, I un-ticked all Linear PCM options and just left all the DTS and dolby digtal ones ticked, when I played a game it came up with "DTS surround" instead of the "M in 7.1": my question is, for better sound should i use DTS or is PCM multi in a better option ??
Sorry If I sound like a noob, like I said before all this is very new to me.

At the risk of resurrecting a pointless debate, there *should* not be a difference between letting your receiver decode the lossless audio (PS3 set to bitstream) or having the PS3 do it and send the already decoded signal to your receiver (PS set to LPCM).

Sounds like your receiver is receiving a 7.1 signal from the PS3 even though your setup is 5.1. To make this not happen, you should uncheck all the 7.1 options in the manual setup (I believe there are four of them). I suggest leaving everything else checked so you don't limit what gets sent to your receiver.
Quick question. My daughter put a credit card in the disc slot in my 60GB ps3 this morning and it's missing in there discs won't be accepted so I'm assuming it's right in. It's out of warranty so I'm not worried about voiding that. is there any advice on getting it out without destroying the machine?? I don't have any service centers nearby to take it to. I'm an electrician so I'm sure I can try take it apart and get it out just want some advice on getting out. If it breaks so be it bit I rather salvage it. Thanks in advance.

Im sure you can do it. Be very carful not to break the clip where drive ribbon connects to the motherboard. Put a small flat head between ribbon and clip in the center. Dont pry it like you want to. Rotate the screw driver it will release it. Open the drive by taking all screws out except the 2 black ones holding the board. Remove top metal cover from rear first the front wraps around. Remove the 5 black screws in plastic top. Lift straight up remove the card. If the right arm is forward and left is back you will have to reset drive. It should be in empty position. If its not the arms in front center will be up. They block double loading of disk.
Ok couldn't get the card out so I bought a new 160gb slim. I've tried to set the settings as I remember the from the 60 but I'm going to bitstream the audio to let my onkyo receiver decode it. Is there a list of recommended settings for the ps3 to maximize video and audio output. Like I said I think I've got it set right but extra info is always good. Thanks.

If you go to the first page and look down in the second post from Ron Jones, he did an excellent job and really spells it out for exactly what you need to do to maximize your PS3. Kudos to Ron, as his post is all I used to really enjoy my PS3.

I have a problem that I can't quite explain. Everything worked fine before and I now have this problem without having changed any settings (at least I haven't changed anything...)
My setup is: TV Sony 40W4000, AV receiver Denon AVR1910, and PS3.
PS3 goes through HDMI to Denon, and another HDMI goes from Denon to TV.
I set my Denon to allow pass through of video and audio, so that when it is in standby mode, I can still use my PS3 and TV only (let's face it, you don't need to use the AV receiver to watch Friends or How I met your mother for example).
Everything worked fine, but now when I do that, I don't hear people talking. It seems that my TV only outputs the front left and front right of a 5.1 mix, leaving out the center (with dialogues) and I suppose the surrounds (but that's harder to tell).
From what I remember, I had setup my PS3 leaving audio output to Auto, which allowed pretty much anything up to 7.1 176kHz. I tried to change that setting while my Denon is in standby, doing it in Auto the PS3 only allows Stereo outputs (it makes sense). But if I do that, I don't have 5.1 anymore when I use my Denon!
A TV that receives 5.1 is not able to downmix it to stereo? I thought it could...
I am really lost here, I don't know if the problem (or setting to be changed) is on the PS3, the Denon or the TV. And again, the thing that drives me crazy is that it used to work like a charm.

So it seems your ps3 is sending 5.1 audio to your tv? Well it shouldn't... No fw updates were performed I'm assuming, did you try to connect ps3 to tv directly and see what happens?
Yes, I did. I removed the Denon from the "equation" and connected PS3 and TV directly.
Same problem as long as audio output on my PS3 allows to output in every format (configuration done in Auto mode when the Denon was connected and turned on).
If I go to this setting in this configuration (TV-PS3 only) and ask for auto configuration, the PS3 will only leave stereo options, which will work but that means I would have to redo this configuration in the PS3 settings everytime I switch from "PS3 with AVR on" to "PS3 with AVR off" ! I didn't have to do that before.
Somehow I figured that the PS3 and TV "talked" to each other via HDMI (which seems to happen, since Automatic configuration on the PS3 is different when my AVR is on or off) to make it work...
For the BD Internet Connection, the "confirm" or "allow" options are terrible.
I got sick of waiting 5 minutes for every disc to download new commercials for me to watch, so I set it it to confirm, and now I have to stay in the room and wait for the disc to load because otherwise it always freezes on a page asking me if I want to allow it to connect to the Internet (effectively disabling AutoPlay).
I can't even describe how frustrating this is. Has anyone figured out how to tell it to NEVER connect to the Internet when play BD and just be done with it?
^^^. I agree, in fact if I ever get a standalone BD player, that will one of the major reasons. I tried to remedy that issue in the way your describe, with similar results.

The PS3 only "talks" to the display (or receiver) when you do the setup, it doesn't do it each time you turn it on. So you have to run the setup when it's connected directly to the TV to avoid sending formats the TV can't handle. That's the downside of using the receiver's pass-through mode (it would be the same if you used an external HDMI splitter to connect the PS3 output to both the TV and receiver).
Is your PS3 set to output bitstream or PCM? You might find the TV behaves differently if you switch that setting.

I would understand that if it had never worked before. The thing is, it used to work, and I just had to turn the receiver on to have the sound removed from the TV and in 5.1 on my receiver (obviously by selecting the ps3 input on the receiver), and to turn it off and have the sound back on my TV.
It was that simple.

Yes it a security patch right after Sony filed a protective order against geohot George Holtz in California yesterday also and a judge approved it. If you are wanting to jailbreak yours don't update!
