Yeah, I've noticed the mosquito setting adjustment seems to do a good job. Even raising it from "0" to "1" can clean up some DVDs quite a bit.

just got my ps3 a few days ago, got a bunch of stuff thrown in for free from my local BB, guitar hero 3 and $50 gift card so i got 2 movies: T2 and thunderball. Popped in T2 the first night and was blown away, then played guitar hero for3+ hours yesterday and had a blast.

I'm at a bit of a loss with all the settings for both video and audio and where i should have them set to get the best picture that my TV and receiver are capable of. My monitor is a Panasonic TH-50PX80U connected via HDMI and I have a legacy receiver connected via optical.

Specifically:
Super-White?
all of the 2-Ch LPCM settings at different Hz?
RGB, Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr, or Auto?
Bitstream or LPCM audio out?
BD / DVD Cinema Conversion?
double-scale or normal for upscaling?

Thanks alot for the help, just trying to get the best sound and picture i can!

I read that post looking for an answer to my audio question but I couldn't find it. My Marantz says it's getting a 7.1 signal from my PS3 (no disk or game in) but I don't have a 7.1 setup. Is there a way to set the PS3 so it doesn't send a 7.1 signal? Do I simply uncheck all the 7.1 options in the sound settings menu? Is there an easier way?

Yes, I'm searching this thread for answers but I haven't stumbled across the right key words to pull out the info I need.

Actually I would start off looking at the available settings on your Marantz AVR. Are its settings correct for 5.1 channel operation and if it has been configured correctly for 5.1 what does it do when it detects a 7.1 channel input (i.e., does it mix the side and rear surround channels or simply ignore the rear surround info)? If the Marantz doesn't automatically mix the side and rear surrounds with a 7.1 channel input (to produce a correct 5.1 channel output to your surround speakers), then you will need to go to the PS3 audio output settings for the HDMI output and make certain no 7.1 channel formats are checked.

I know the Marantz is set to a 5.1 system but I'll need to check to see what it does when presented with a 7.1 signal. I think I'd rather have the PS3 just send a 5.1 signal and be done with it.

Anyone seen this article on the ongoing price drop rumor? This one says "in the next couple days."

Also, what's this garbage about removing blu-ray capabilities??

All PS3 games are on Blu-ray, so you just can't get rid of Blu-ray on the PS3.

Not all are. But I still do not see it happening. Many new games are going to take advantage of blu-ray and it make's no rational business sense to remove it. Especially when it is going to become (if it already isn't) serious leverage/advantage vs MS.

Sony has blu-ray and downloadable content to deliver media in the future.
MS has dvd and downloadable content to deliver media in the future.

MS seems to be banking on DL content alone. Something is going to have to give for MS imo.

When i put in a bluray or dvd movie on the ps3 it seems to bypass the main menu of the movie and just auto starts the movie, i have to hit the "pop up menu" option on my remote to get to the menu, is there a setting to turn off the movie starting without going to top menu? thx

No, it depends on the disc, allot of the blu-ray content is mastered that way. I actually like it. Nearly everything I need to do (change audio tracks / subtitles) I can do in-movie anyway.

If a wired connection is feasible it would be better. If not you can always give wireless a shot first.

if its just blu-ray, some browsing, and firmware i'd say wireless. If gaming wired is probably the way to go since the PS3 only supports wireless G.

I use my computer as a server and wirelessly stream music and SD video at wireless G speeds over TVersity to my PS3 no problems, and my PC is about 4 years old now

Just to resurrect an older post. I have gotten TrueHD to work in AVCHD. Turned out not to be an issue with the PS3 but an issue with tsmuxer which most folks use to process ts(m2ts) files. It had a bug with TrueHD.

Version 1.8.18(b) has fixed this. Now using multiAVCHD (don't have to use this but makes life easier) I can author an entire movie up to 32Gb (though there are not many BD titles that large) to a USB attached drive with TrueHD audio and it plays fine on the PS3. The movie broken into 4G segments and strung along together like seamless branching.

[note - I just took a look and saw that the main title in Transformers BD is 40Gb but much of that could be stripped out - alternate languages, commentaries etc.]

Does the PS3 automatically play the files in succession without any delay or do you manually have to select each file?

Well last night I watched my 1st BulRay movie, "The Water Horse", on my new PS3........and I have a question.
My Samsung HDTV remote has one button you can push and it displays what format the signal coming into the set is........for example: When watching HD Channels if I press theat button it tells me that the signal that it is receiving is 1920x1080i @60HZ......it then converts everything to 1080p. Well, I wanted to see if when I ran a true 1080p signal from the BluRay disc what it would tell me the signal was, I was surprised and perplexed because it told me: 1920x1080 @24HZ ..... NO "p" after the 1080.
Was I actually truly watching 1920x1080P?
If so - I was somewhat disappointed after hearing ALL the RAVES about it......the PQ was not that much better, if at all, than my old OPPO 270HD upconverted DVD's to. Don't get me wrong - it was a GREAT picture BUT if that is it.....I am having buyer's remorse after paying so MUCH for maybe a slight improvement in PQ.

oh, and thanks for the link to the FAQ, got it all figured out.

I bought a refrigerator at BB. About two weeks later, I found it advertised for less than what I paid for it. I took my receipt to customer service and in a very short time, I had a credit to my credit card for the difference. And the price then was a few dollars less than what I found on the Internet.

All you have to have is your receipt and find a lower price in the first 30 days after you bought the item.

Do you wear glasses/contacts? If not then go get your eyes checked and see if glasses might make a difference. I did not notice a huge improvement over upconversion and then I got a pair of glasses and HOLY HELL it is crazy the difference in PQ!!!

Yes, 1920x1080 @24hz is 1080p24. The Water Horse is a gold 1.5 rated movie (by users @ http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=858316) so should be pretty good image wise.

Have you had your display calibrated? No offense but people who just plug in a blu-ray player and expect to just be blown away may be pretty disappointed. May have many issues without calibrating a source to a display. Loss of resolution (detail) due to incorrect sharpness control, loss of fidelity (color/depth) due to incorrect contrast/brightness/colour balance.

I have a display calibrated to both my blu-ray player and my Reon chipped upscaler. A well mastered blu-ray blows away anything on my upscaler and the Reon (though not as good as the bigger Realta or Marvell) is a pretty good damn upscaler.

I am using multiAVCHD. It sets the playlist so the PS3 plays each title in succession. Though haven't done exhaustive testing the transition seems to be seamless. I would be surprised if it weren't given many BD titles have up to 20 different files comprising the movie and if you saw transitions between each, you would not be happy!

It doesn't get a whole lot better than Water Horse in terms of picture quality. If you can't notice much of a difference, then prepare to be unimpressed by blu-ray in general.

While I'm watching blu ray movies via PS3, resolution shows 1080p on my pioneer display but when I go to play games shows 720p do you know why? Output set to 1080p and when I'm in the PS3 menu screen everything shows 1080p resolution but games goes to 720p. Any help here? Everything hooked up via HDMI.

Most games are still 720p. It doesn't matter what the output is set to. If the game itself is 720p that's what the PS3 will put out.
