I think there is a wisdespread issue with this series of player.

I'm on my second S300 (the first was an S301, but still that's the same thing) and both were updated via DVD to the latest firmware file without issue (I even burned a new update DVD on a different computer between the first and second BD player). When I skip chapters forward quickly (say 5 or 6 button presses at .5 to .75 second intervals) or skip around using the pop-up menu a lot I find tht it is easy to lock this unit up to the point that only holding the power button will shut it down and allow me to regain control. I had this issue badly with the movie Unforgiven and exchanged the disc for a new one. I have also had this issue with the remastered 5th Element.

Other issues that seem related:
While at circuit city today, I managed through furied chapter skipping to freeze their S500. I suspect that firmware and logic boards are more or less the same across the their product lines and that one or the other has some sort of issue.

Today I hit the top menu option on my 300 while playing Blood Diamond and it began to stutter during playback. I had to shut down the player and restart it to get it t o play normally.

During this time I went from my old TV to my new one and even bought a new HDMI cable. My point is that the constant has been the Sony player while the rest of the setup has changed, thus the payer has to be at fault.

I will be calling Sony about this and if anyone else has had these issues (lock ups following chapter skipping / menu usage or stuttering playback after using the menus), please post here so I can direct Sony to this thread. I figure if they can see that this is not an isolated thing, they'll get on it. PLEASE ONLY POST IN THIS THREAD IF THE ISSUES CONTAINED HEREIN ARE SIMILAR TO YOURS. PLEASE DO NOT OFFER TECH SUPPORT. THis thread is being put together to show Sony and I want it as clean as possible.

The only time my BDPS301 has ever locked up is when chapter skipping quickly.
I can do this every time at the beginning of Casino Royale for example if I press chapter skip as soon as the blue nag screen appears.
It has never frozen when simply playing a movie.

+1 (and yes I own one)
And the Sony fanbois insist that the Blu-ray technology is superior.

I think it's easy to "overload" the CPU in the player if you hit too many buttons too fast - i.e. ask it to process too many commands in a short time. That being said, it seems to freeze up for no reason doing chapter skips & FF sometimes. In fact, the very first disc I played froze the player when I tried to skip chapter. Not a good way to start off. It'll be a long while before I buy another one, though. They have a long way to go to make BD players even decent - I feel like a beta tester.

I have only had two hiccups with my player. Yes both occurred when skipping chapters, but never when just watching a movie.

One player does not a technology make. Unless it's a Toshy HD-DVD player.

Certainly not the best player. I wish I hadn't purchased it. Skips, locks up, just an unpolished player.

I miss the rosewood sides on the old Pioneer Elite equipment!

Blu-ray - 576

Not if people don't provide more detail in their posts. Sony can only address issues if they can duplicate them.

I had a BDP-S300 in the UK. It froze up when picture searching backwards and forwards sometimes (i.e FFD and RWD, not just chapter skip).

Also, Silver Surfer froze up in the middle during playback. And often it froze up in the interactive menus if I tried to navigate them too fast.

The S500 I have instead now, seems more stable...so far...it has never locked up yet. But the OP stated they got an S500 to lock up..so I will do some more tests.

I have a BDP-S300 that is on it's way to Sony for a warranty repair. I was having the same problems (freezing during ch. skip and regular play) as some of the other owners. I had to send it in, though, because it quit reading discs altogether. It would not read either BDs or standard DVDs. If you all want, I will post once Sony notifies me of the reason for this (their reason, at least). I will also be happy to report on how they handle a warranty repair (cust. service, turnaround time, etc.).

There has been some issues with this player and many other HD-DVD player and many Blu-Ray players. I had 2 A2's lock up and all sorts of problems not playing Discs, so far the S-300 has done well for "Me".. I just put Pixar short films in and it took awhile to load for some reason but that is the only disc I have had any issues with so far.

You might want to put this in the S-300 Thread since there is discussion there about this same thing...

youknowryan: Maybe it sitting too closely to your Toshiba XA2 with the Loud Fan.... Hopefully you got that problem fixed as well... If you look in the Sony BDP-S300 Thread, that is where I would direct Sony too, there are a few other people in there with similar issues, could have been a bad batch, similar to my issue I have had before with the A2 a while back ago. I would have been all over the new pricing at Walmart if it wasn't for the issues I had before with the A2s....

alevel 2 sony bd tech is watching this thread, i want it to be here so it is clear and easy to follow. also the batch theory doesn't hold. my first unit was a made in japan s301, my second unit is a made in malaysia s300, they were purchased at different retailers and made in different countries about 4 months apart. there issue is fw or hardware at some level.

Well again, you might want to direct him/her to the main S-300 thread because that is where most of the post are on problems. I had problems with 2 A2s, I just returned them, if your having similar issues with the S-300 I would suggest doing the same... If Sony batched some of these units up why should you be the guinea pig!

PS: I need to ask you a few unrelated questions to LCD TV's... The Sammy verses the Toshiba/Sony XBR4s... Looking for a set for the bedroom..

My 301 has locked up several times (approx 1 out of every 3) during normal playback. The only way out has been power off and restart the movie and then select the scene I was at. Have not installed the firmware upgrade Sony sent.

Was a stop gap player until something good was built at a reasonable price.

I never had an issue with my player until I uploaded the new firmware also. I already informed Sony about my issues, but I am willing to put it in written form to help the cause.

Garman,

I have had 4 different HD DVD players (HDP5000, A1, A2, D2) and the early models did have freezing problems. But the current models (A2, D2 and other 2nd gen) are all A-OK, in terms of bootup, navigation, playability of titles.

I have over 30 titles and play many SD titles and its my primary player now (sorry Oppo, S301).

My S301 freezes and FF/REW is delayed response no matter how much I await firmware updates and hope that they solve them...not to mention disappointing picture and sound, compared to my A2 and Oppo.

You may want to try a firmware update on your A2 if you still have it.

Good luck.

IMO the S300 should be Sony's $99 blu-ray player. I have never been so dissapointed with a player before. Sadly the A2 still beats it out in performance. I am a new owner of a Panasonic BD30 and could never be happier. It bitstreams every codec I want and it's just as fast as a PS3 as far as load times.

Sony please learn your lessons from the S300... ooops too late, just saw there "new" line of blu-ray players...

Is it me or does Sony think it's customers are stupid...
Relaseing new players that don't decode or heaven forbid bistream the new codecs??? Stop living in the past. You think THEY would have been the first out with Profile 1.1 players, after all... It is THEIR format...

No, I haven't had the exact same problems as 'youknowryan'. After my latest update, I'm presuming for the FOX titles, my problem was that my 300, and my S1, {I'll concentrate on the 300} would lock up on a DVD. I don't usually watch DVDs too much on my players, but I did notice it on Transformers.

I would also like to point out that this does not occur with any frequency, Just something that I noticed after the update. Prior to that: I had only one problem and that was Transporter would not play on my S1, but it did play on the S300. But, that's another story.

Well I can say that about Toshiba crappy customer services as well, I went through two A2s one wouldn't play specific movies at all and then I got another replacement and when I did a firmware it wouldn't work at all!! Called customer service and they told me to return them to the dealer/store where I bought them so I did, then I got a S-300 ad haven't hand any issues.. At least the S-300 will do 1080/24p..... I for one agree with you on the Panasonic line, seems like there a step ahead of Sony when it comes to getting players out....

wewa: Did the firmware update on the A2 and it quit working period, hasn't happen with my S-300 if it did, I would be in here bitching about it I would return the damn thing and tell Sony to stick it. LOL But I haven't had any issues except a few slow loading times which got better with the firmware updates. I don't tolerate BS, from any company and that includes Sony, if a product doesn't work like it is supposed to then return it, this goes for the Red side of the Fence as well, there are plenty of people bitching about players over there. I have a extended Warr on my S-300 and if it comes down to the point it doesn't work right, it is going back and I will pick up a Panasonic, but so far so good.

I am keeping it on topic, I am talking about my experiences with my S-300! Unless you want to keep this just another bitch thread about a product some one doesn't like, I think we have enough of those... And I have had some minor issues with my player but few. You might want to point to the HD-DVD fanboys who are keeping this way off topic and I can see plenty of them that don't even mention the S-300, but just another plug on HD-DVD...

After last firmware All Disney movies load faster.. Still not fast enough.. DVD are very quick to load and most of my Blu-Ray collection loads fast with the exception of a few.
