Instead of WalMart doing some sort of market tracking, or Sony creating hype or a marketing opportunity for the BD format, I have another theory on this deal...

Point 1: I actually saw a reference to the "secret" sale on Wednesday night or Thursday night's 10:00 news *ON TV* - including the 80GB PS3/10 BD disk deal. The "secret" sale was also on the web site. I don't think there was much secret about it. Not heavily promoted perhaps, but certainly not secret by any real definition.

Point 2: Somebody made reference to Sony reimbursing WalMart for the 10 BD disks a page or two back, right? If Sony is paying the tab, then it's them looking for ROI, not WalMart.

Point 3: It's no secret that Sony hasn't been selling the PS3 in quite the numbers they had hoped for. Game sales are even worse, since many of the PS3's are only getting movies played on them - not games. In short, they really want to sell PS3's.

Point 4: Sony really needs BD to kick some HD-DVD ass. It hasn't been looking nearly as lop-sided as it was for awhile. Certainly, any additional sales are a good thing.

Point 5: There are over 3,000 WalMart stores in the US. If only half those stores had two takers of the "secret" PS3/10 free BD deal, that would equal "sales" of 30,000 BluRay disks in the month of November alone. What it would cast them... maybe half a million bucks for that many disks? That's barely one big national prime-time ad-buy. How will those Sales numbers look for Sony? Answer: Great.

For awhile, BD was outselling HD-DVD 2 to 1. For the last few months, not so much. I think Sony just wants strong sales, and they're willing to pony up some cash to do it. So, I think this is all about sales numbers and market share. They're "buying" the sales numbers, but they're getting the sales numbers, and they're getting players in people's hands (which results in additional sales). They're also no doubt swaying people who don't want to go format neutral to pick the BD cam instead of the HD-DVD camp.

I've been HD-DVD-only for over a year and was waiting for a $250 BD player that I liked. The PS3 at $400-500 was just more than I wanted to spend. Considering the free movies and net cost for the player, this deal got BD into the ballpark for me (and into my house). I'll now be buying BD disks - which is exactly what Sony wants.

They also don't have any HDDVD or BR movies displayed - you have to know what you want and ask for it". Interesting system ...

John

Almost the same scenario for me. Although I was very fortunate to have scored a unit at the last minute, and was able to pick my own (10) dvd's, I have to say these people don't know their &%*%$ from a hole in the ground. This afternoon, I took (3) of the movies I had picked earlier back to the store closest to me (the "bad one"), to exchange for different ones. Talk about bad attitudes and they're doing you a favor. But, I figured out what it is. They cover up their not knowing what to do by saying "you can't do that". I kept showing them the ad and asked them to show me where it say's that you can't exchange the new, unopened DVD's. Plus the store that I actually bought from, said that I could. This store blamed the other store for them not knowing what to do (ha). While I was there, I saw the "other area" where they had another BR display. No one even knew anything about that display until all of them conjugated on that aisle. Anyway, after everyone got in on the act, making me more aggressive than a customer needs to be, I picked out the (3) different titles from the newly discovered display. This is the same store that knew nothing nor cared about knowing anything. Even though they're alot more titles out at other retailers, here are the one's I ended up with:

Pirates - Curse
Pirates - Dead Man's Chest
Live Free or Die Hard
300
Ocean's Thirteen
Rescue Dawn
Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Spider - 3
Ghost Rider
and . . . Home of the Brave snuck in there (even though it was $32.99).

All in all I'm lucky to have found one at all. Just frustrated with the arrogance of some of the employees. I still have the mail order (5) to pick from. Going to wait for a little while. Hmmm . . . I wonder if B.B. or C.C will exchange any.

BTW, the store didn't know about the mail-in coupon either but said that it must be in the box. I haven't opened it yet, but, is it in the box? I did, however, print a copy from the above posted site.

Man I just went to get the 80gb PS3 deal at SonyStyle in Manhattan-- WORST customer service EVER!

Long story short, they gave me the run-around on the Sony Card and $100 offer, and I ended up not buying it. Do NOT go to this store, the manager is an @$$hole. Pardon my expression, but it's the truth. I feel like calling corporate up and filing a complaint, but I'll save the headache and buy it online instead, even with the backorder status.

You had better luck than me. I had the exact same situation: One Walmart with PS3s but a crappy selection of movies, and one with no PS3s but a slightly better selection. After getting my stuff, I went to the one with the better selection to try and exchange some of the bad ones. By then, they ended up only having one title I wanted the other didn't have. Told the guy in electronics what I wanted to do, he said to just go to customer service. Went there, stood in line, gave them the disk I wanted to get, explained that I had to go to the car to get the one I wanted to exchange (didn't carry them in, 'cause I didn't know how many they'd have that I'd want). Got a movie out of my car, stood in line @ cust service again, then when I went to exchange she said "what's up with your receipt" (referring to the $0 amounts on the movies). Explained to her that those were free with the PS3 sale, and she said "we don't have a sale like that". I suggested she look at their web site, because it's right there on the front page. She then called back to the electronics manager, then told me he said that I couldn't exchange the discs I got from the promotion.

I just said fine, and left. This transaction was the first time I've bought anything from Walmart in about four years. I'm sure it'll be at least another four before I give them another chance. I'll just exchange the few that I don't want @ BB after xmas, and continue giving them this kind of business. They aren't saints, but they aren't nearly as bad as WM.

My dual Rythmik Servo sub project (actually quad now, need to update page)

I could not find the Panasonic BD30 for that price but did find it at Circuit City for $423 (on sale for $469 and used a 10% off coupon from AAA bringing the price down to $423). I actually ended up getting it at Best Buy since they agreed to match CC's price. Took a little discussion but the manager agreed to the price match.

CC has it for $469.99 as Chris mentions a few posts back. The 5 free movies is a mail in offer for which the BD30 qualifies. I believe most Bluray players sold qualify for this offer as well.

I must say I am like you in that I donot shop at WM. But I did go for this deal but not until 7 pm. And they still had one with some ok movies. The assistant manager was in the dept. talking about the deal. So she got me the PS3 and I got the movies and was on my way. It was one of the best trips I have had there.

But it does seem like the stories are all over the place as to how they did this deal. And I donot blame the stores for that but upper mgmt.

got in on this deal today.... was there at around 6am... only person in the store besides employees.

Anyway same story here.... nobody knew about it at first not even the store manager. And most were very rude when all I wanted to know was where do I hang out to be "in line" for the deal. Mass confusion.... being directed to hang out in electronics..... then in the "site to store" area then back and forth a few times with noone in agreement where.

Anyway finally at 8:05 I was able to check out with my movies and PS3. Did a manual override on each movie individually and my receipt says $0.00 for each.

First time and last time I'll do the wait in line camp out early thing but in the end it worked out. I think since this went down on Sat after black Friday it really helped since the major mahem was over.

Even though I downloaded the (5) free disc coupon on line (just in case), has anyone who's opened their box, seen one inside? Just curious, since the employee told me that "it should be in the box".

I didn't see anything about it, but maybe I missed it.

Sony dropped the price of the BDP-S300 to $399. While some stores were selling a little cheaper, Best Buy was offering a $100 gift card with purchasing. Thus the effective price was $299. I think this deal ended today (saturday). They were also giving away Spiderman 3 free with purchase. Then there is still the standard 5 free movies via mail deal.

Another thing I did not see in all the talk about wal Mart was this:

-well, had a URL here, but since this is my first post, it wouldn't let me do it.

Same Sony for $348.88. Additionally, get 5 free movies from Wal-mart in addition to the 5 from mail in. This may not be 10 free movies like the PS3 deal, but several people mentioned that they didn't really like the idea of the gaming system on their home theater rack. Price wise this is cheaper.

I finally opened my box and no coupon in it. No big deal as already stated. I'd like to now be able to return all of the free movies (without a receipt) for a store gift card. Maybe I'll do it little by little.

I went to three different WM's this morning (SD county, CA) - In the first store, one guy beat me to the last 80GSD they had. There was no one else there but him and I... the second two stores were out of stock, and did not know about the deal, said all machines were sold yesterday. So no luck here in Southern Cal.

I would have been hard pressed to choose 10 titles of what they had in these stores... So I dont feel bad at all. In fact there are only a few titles of what other people in this thread have reported that are worth owning, IMHO...

So when does the sony style offer end - and do you apply for credit first before putting in cart - or do you do it at checkout? thx

> There can be only one.

As per the Sony rep, the $100 offer is good till the end of December. So no rush, maybe a better deal will come out. Plus, the PS3 is backordered from SonyStyle.com.

For the deal, you apply first. Once approved, use the CC number they give you to checkout with the items. Be sure to add the extra controller to your cart, as it is not automatically done for you.

If you want it right away, then go to a Sony Style store near you. However, I had a bad experience with incompetent employees today (first they said new account machine was down, then I went home to open a new account, and came back w/ the info, they then told me that I can't just give acct. info to buy a PS3, that I needed an actual card, WTF?!). Maybe you'll have better luck!

Anyone in the Charlotte, NC area is in for a treat. Do yourself a favor and check out the Independence Best Buy store. I picked up the Panasonic BD30 player for 249.99 yesterday complete. They had two of the older model Panasonic Blue Ray Players for that same price, both complete. I picked up one today as I am unsure which player will be the best for me because I do not have an HDMI reciever but I do want to be able to take advantage of the newer audio tracks. They had the LG combo player (original model) complete for 499. The sony Bluray player was 199 and complete. Several HD-A30 HD dvd players for 199.99, two HD-A3 players for 99.99 each (with two free movies packaged in the shrink wrap). The list goes on and on. Everything in the store other than laptop computers, GPS, and television sets that is open item is 50% OFF!!!! There are signs posted in the departments and anybody who does not believe me is welcome to request a copy of my reciept and copy of the open item tag I can e-mail to them. Those are likely the best prices you will find right now ANYWHERE, retail store or internet.

I would have been hard pressed to choose 10 titles of what they had in these stores... So I dont feel bad at all. In fact there are only a few titles of what other people in this thread have reported that are worth owning, IMHO...

So when does the sony style offer end - and do you apply for credit first before putting in cart - or do you do it at checkout? thx

The cart that our WalMart brought up, had a box of movies, we had 40 titles to choose from.

Is the deal still going if they have 80Gig in stock (today is Sunday) and there are 3 WM stores with 80 GB in stock, can we still get 10 free movies?

My Walmart opened each movie and drew a line across the bar codes as well as keying them to the PS3....told me it was to prevent scammers from returning the system without the movies....guess they are experienced.

Just returned from my local WM, in Somersworth NH, with the "Secret Sale PS3". The sale at my WM is good through 11/25 until 11:59 pm. When I left the store there was one PS3 in the display case and ten in the back. The CSR said to let people know, so I'm letting you folks know. The movie selection was still quite good, I was able to pick up all the movies I was looking for!

Bought a PS3 yesterday and noticed that Sony's big freebie Blu-Ray promotion is not open to residents of Quebec. has anyone found a way around this, or any other deals that are open, or is Quebec the only place in North America not getting free discs with the purchase of BR hardware?

The free movie offer didn't interest me.

This did at Costco - PS3 80/motorstorm with 2 controllers and blue ray remote for 449.00

Bought last one they had, I guess they marked them down today acording to the item tag.

Went there to get a vacum cleaner.

PS3 and A2 - just want my HD
