It's covered in the 1400 thread, but yes, it does all the newer (and the older too ) audio via HDMI bitstream.

Good luck, I received the controller today, but no PS3 for me. I'll have to get one at a retailer offering a giftcard. Thanks to Sony for the free controller.

So with better processor, cheaper price, additional 3BR DVD promotion, how it stacks vs Penny 300?

Re: Target

Somebody mentioned the Target offer going on. $399, plus $100 Target gift card with purchase of 2 Blu Ray DVDs. When I looked at the circular, that is also what I saw. When I was in my local Target, the price listed was $379.00, with the $100 gift card with 2 BD purchase. Should last til Saturday.

Could some one please explain how this credit card deal works? Do you have to buy the PS3 from them (SONYSTYLES) to receive 100.00 discount? Does it come off your total price, for example can I get a PS340G for 299.99 instantly or do I have to wait for a dicount after paying full price 399.99?

zoro,

I had the 1400 (returned it) and bought the BD30. I have yet to upgrade my pre-pro to a HDMI 1.3 capable unit but even without onboard processing for DD+/TrueHD and DTS-HD/MA the BD30 is the better choice IMO.

Read through the 1400 and BD30 threads. You will see the 1400 has many issues where so far the BD30 has had very few. You will also see many posts from former 1400 owners that have bought the BD30.

My SACD collection, watch it grow and my wallet shrink ;-).

Denon 4311 (in preamp mode), Parasound 2100, Boston Acoustics A7200 amp, Oppo BDP-103, Consonance CD120, Panasonic TC-P60GT50 plasma, Panamax 5100EX, Salk Song Towers, Song Center, ADS 300C (surrounds) and two Rythmik F12SEs.

Well I tried it at Best Buy & Circuit City today. Niether would match it. Heard everything from they don't match online specials to they don't match bundled offers and even they don't match non-physical location competitors.

I can confirm it's true though. I just came from Target and they had the advertisements in front of the Blu-Ray movies that qualify for the deal. I think it was Casino Royale, 300, Spidey 3, Polar Express, Surf's Up and a couple others. Of course that particular Targey had no PS3's in stock. Good grief.

Is there a similar deal for the 80gb model by any chance?

Well the ad didn't specify the 40gb or 80 gb per say. I think it just said any Sony Blu-Ray player and 2 select BR movies.

Excellent. I think I might have to go down there after work, and open up a target credit card. A PS3 80 GB for around $350 ($499 - $50 (10% off for using the target card) - $100 gift card promotion) plus the cost of 2 BR movies sounds like a good enough deal to me to get me to bite and finally go format neutral.

Went to BB and I had to get the company i work for a new TV and they had a deal for me to get $100 of my purchase if i bought a PS3 with it. So i charged my credit card $299 plus tax and the rest on the company card! Now I'm both Red and Blue at the house no more complaining about not getting the movies in HD.

So I just called my local Target, and, as usual, got some idiot on the line... he states that the $100 gift card offer does not apply to the Playstation, rather only the Sony's standalone BR player. Anything in the fine print of this offer that states otherwise?

I'm not sure if the Target Gift Card can immediately be applied to the purchase of the PS3.

No, I didn't think so... but, it is inevitable that I'll be dropping a c-note at Target sometime during the holiday season.

Well, the online ad at Target.com specifically says the $100 gift card is for the Sony 300, not the PS3. Am I missing something? If this is true (PS3), I am there later today.

I just called another Target to check the availability of the PS3 40 gb. The clerk in electronics said the PS3 did not qualify for the $100 gift card. He said the deal only applied to the standalone Sony BR Player. Crap.

I never owned the 1400, but a guy I buy from at BB (Magnolia) said it is very often returned. Not recommended by anyone there as they hate to see it come back.

So the ad is for the S300 Sony. That's still not a bad deal. Target also has a 90day return policy and I am also sure the usual suspects would price match. I may give this as a gift to my son and daughter-in-law.

Zoro, I cannot compare since I have never seen/used the Panny. I am keeping my 1400, and am quite happy with its performance.

You gotta do what you gotta do, but over the years I've learned two things (only!).
1. I do not EVER listen to what any worker in a BIG AV store tells me about Av equipment (except how much they'll discount my item). I research it myself, go for the best (in my humble opinion) that I can buy (w/WAF always at the forefront), and i don't marry it... if it sucks, I return it.
2. There's a lot of really helpful folks posting on AVS. Unfortunately, their helpful posts can be missed considering how many other posts there are.

If more of us valued food and cheer above hoarded gold, it would be a much merrier world.
